You're taking the piss about West arent you!!?? Dont get me wrong the bloke is a champion player but he'd be shit useless as a coach. Have you ever heard him speak? He can hardly articulate himself! (ok probably a bit harsh) but the guy just wouldn't have the brain to be an assistant coach IMO.

with all due respect.. brett ratten isnt exactly a rhodes scholar.. IMO opinion he comes across as far from intelligent in what i have seen of him... id say westy would be cut from the same cloth.. seem a bit dim witted but know their footy...

I reckon there is a fair chance an assistant who just resigned from Port Adeaide will end up coming over. Can't recall his name but he did play a season or 2 for the Pies, think I read somewhere he won a best 1st year player award.

Things can change but I know I have seen interviews with Harvey where he has stated he's not interested in coaching....

Josh Mahoney?

Bleh may as well get Jason Wild while we're at it... :o

They say sometimes great players struggle to coach well because they don't understand players who can't play as well as them, well I think you can't coach either if you couldn't play as well as the players you are coaching.

Take Grant Thomas for example.

As much as we'd hate to admit, Burns will probably be an assistant for us next year. Even Wakes - are they finished? If they aren't getting up the this week's game then that possibly indicates that they're very, very close.

No doubt he knows his footy but you have to be able to convey that knowledge to the players. Experts in their field don't necesarily make the best teachers. I think West would really struggle being able to articulate his point of view to the players, and also with finer tactical details.

i cant really disagree with any of that.... however as an assistant or if he does his certificate in coaching he might be able to learn this aspect... but overall without actually knowing westy your point is more than makes sense.....

lol.. i still think brett ratten is poor in terms of articulating his thoughts too (bit like me). maybe thats why carlton are actually winning games... he is saying one thing team is doing another- and winning...

Harvey does seem a champion bloke in my estimation, but the query over him is that he's very quietly spoken and just goes about his business. He would have a ton of knowledge to impart, but does he have the necessary demeanor to coach?

I reckon he might. I did not see all of the recent St Kilda game where 7 had him miked up but saw a highlight reel where they showed some of the things he was saying and he is passionate and really encouraging. There was one point where he was telling the other players "Never give up, never give up".

Stewart Loewe also described his as one of the best sledgers of all time which I found quite amazing.

I don't think he will be a senior coach but he would be great as a development or midfield coach. I reckon he would love working with the young kids.

J Mahoney is on a three year deal at Melbourne

I don't care too much who they get as long as they're ex attacking mids. Please, no ex backmen or try hards. We need MM flanked by assistants with flair.

I believe the poster was referrring to Phillip Walsh, a former Pies player. But he has now signed with West Coast as far as I know.
