It has ben good to see a few of our younger players getting a bit more game time and not have the pressure if they f'up they will get dragged to the bench during the nab cup. That seems to be the difference this year to the last few nab cups, the young players are getting time to develop in the nab cup games and show if they have anything or not without fear of been banished to the bench if they make a silly mistake or two, well done ratts.

What are peoples thoughts on Grigg? I know his junior footy he played on the ball/wing/hff and he is now been groomed into a back pocket running defender. Do people think he has shown enough to be in our best 22 come round 1 or wait a few more games and see? He is deceptivily tall, agile and can run and also seems to be able to hit targets consistanly by hand and foot which we need in our last line of defence. Is he a better option than say a bower or even armfeild down back? Good to see we now have a few options at least to release gibbs and walker up the field and into the positions they are best suited.

i think grigg and shown a bit the last couple of games, hopfully they kep giving him the game time to develop further and b a serious contender for round 1... your thoughts?

I believe Grigg has shown enough to get into our best 22 come round 1. He has a big strong body and can hold his own down back. He done some pretty good things down back for us on the weekend and also has the ability to have short stints in the Midfield. I think he will be a good player for Carlton this year. I believe he is a better option than Bower because i feel that Grigg has more composure than Bower, it seems Bower really panics when he has a little pressure on him. Thats why i feel Grigg is a better option than Bower and i think he deserves a chance to show that in Round 1 and im sure Ratten will give him that opportunity.

i heard a few people on this board comparing him to a similar style to Judd when he first got drafted... He's nothing near him. Honestly, i like the kid, but he just looks too slow and sluggish. He gets the ball, but then his body moves about 5 seconds faster than his mind. He seems to panic too much when his got the ball and he just doesn't seem to have what it takes for AFL football. Then again, he has only played a handfull of games, and i could very well be wrong.

Let's just remember, Simmo didn't even pick up ONE disposal in his first 3 senior matches, and look at him now!!

I've liked what I've seen during the NAB. He's no replacement for Bower, in fact seems to work well with him. Based on what I've seen I'd keep him there for a bit longer. Give him a few months and then rotate Anderson in to give them both a go. Armfield could do the same job, but I'd prefer to see him in the middle.

Any time in a senior game will be good for Grigg. We're going to get punished for playing kids sometimes, but they're lumps we're just going to have to take to move forward.

Stinks, another JR.

And I think you very well could be. Has shown a marked improvement in the last 6 months IMO.

This board is going the way of the Richmond Tiger.

congratulations on a very well thought out response :thumbsu:

I think Grigg will play round 1. I have been impressed with his composure and foot skills. I'm still not certain whether he is a backman though. He seems to have the natural flair to play further up the ground. He has great size for a midfielder. Maybe Ratten is teaching him how to be defensive as I pretty sure he ran around doing what he liked in the Under 18's without being overly accountable.

yea spot on i agree with you, that was his only query when he was drafted was his defensive side to his game. Could play a similar role to what gibbs did last year in the back pocket and be taught to defend.

To the guy who said he is another JR what the..... you obviously havn't been watching him to much! JR has been in the system now for what 3 years? Grigg has played 3 or 4 game now and has shown 100% more development than JR has in 3 years. Go away mate and dont comment unless you have somthin usful to say.

Not everyone has time to sit and type for ten hours.

I'm waiting for it, Grigg will be a star!

Nice work AD. I agree Grigg and Bower should both play. They have both matured quite a bit from last year, Bower in particular - I was calling for his head at the end of last season and now think he is close to an auto selection in the 22. He's just gotta keep working hard on his disposal and he will be more than handy.

Grigga looks very composed down back, but needs to be more creative. I would have liked to be at the game on Saturday to watch him more closely, but on TV he seems to get plenty of it, but then chip it sideways or short forward. I guess it also depends on the options being presented by his teammates, but I think he needs to take the game on a bit more.

I'm still undecided on him but starting to come around. The one thing that i noticed a big difference in is his upper body strength this year. Seems a lot stronger in the contests. His ball use has been better also, but to me that looks more like the confidence of more game time!

Has shown more in less game time than Russell imo, and looks to have a few more tricks. Just as long as he has a bigger heart muscle I'd be happy!

I think Grigg has improved exponetionally since he debut last year where he got dragged by Pagan for being caught with the ball, and I don't think we saw him again that match. His composure after so few games is great to see. I'm looking forward to seeing that improvement continue this year, I have a feeling he will team up with Gibbs really well this year.

Very good size and pace, and I think he'll make it.

has been a caught a bit but its a much faster game at AFL level so it make take him some time.

He's a second year player and already in my best 22.

Has improved out of sight on last year........havng said that he didn't have to do too much........actually just move when he got the ball would have done it.:thumbsu:

Isn't there yet and Anderson looked more at home initially, but I can see Grigg taking his spot as he looks a better kick and a bit bigger in size than Ando (someone will probably put some numbers up to prove this wrong).

Grigg's AIS profile said Judd was the player he tried to play like or something along those lines.

I think he'll be a gun and a very good player for the Carlton Football Club.

Grigg didn't look slow and out of place when he ran past to receive the handball to kick a supergoal on the run. Shaun could have run further and made sure of the goal, but he backed himself to kick it from 50 on the run and drilled it.

And you think he looks sluggish?

Very early but not sold on him as yet. Would not have him starting 18 unless he shows more.May sneak into 22 for first round but would have Bower and Jackson ahead of him at this stage.

It was good to see him run in with cam cloke and fev when campbell brown charged kruezer...

It seems a lot of people on BigFooty enjoy taking pot shots at young developing kids...

Give him a break, let him learn the game at AFL level and the boy will be fine. A lot of posters have a knack for judging books by their covers. If we had dismissed every young player who was less than convincing in their early performances, we could rule out basically all of our previous champions, Kouta is a great example.

We just need to jump off everyone's back every time they don't post 20+ possies. Although, 20+ possessions for a defender would be pretty damn good:).

Pfft.
He'll be significantly better than JR. I'd be more concerned with Jake Edwards .

Edwards wasn't a top 20 pick in a super draft. So we really have nothing to lose with selecting him at 36 (from memory)

I've always been filthy on Carlton selecting Grigg because I thought he wasn't worthy of such a high selection. Grigg at 35 would have been a worthy selection.

Albert Proud, Hislop and Dawes should have been selected ahead of Grigg.

I hope i'm wrong though.
