on the poll on the AFL web-site, the question is "If you had $100, would you back any team other than Essendon to win the flag?"

Why wouldn't the AFL simply ask "Do you think any team can beat Essendon this year?"

although it's a minor example, i think it is the simplest way to show the logic that the AFL uses, because this type of logic goes right through to all their major decisions. ie, worrying about socks and tatoos and forgetting the real picture.

And although it is the web-desingers who would ask the question, everything that goes on that site gets endorsed by the AFL first.

WCE2000,

Remember, the question the AFL asked was will anyone other than Essendon, win the flag?

Your question said will any team beat Essendon this year?

They are two differen't questions, really. Essendon could lose, for example, another 1 or 2 games for the season and still win the flag.

will why not simply ask "Will Essendon win the flag?"

Instead of saying, "will anyside other then Essendon win the flag"

It is a very minor example, but it's the top of logic (or lack of it) that travels right through their ranks and affects some of their more major decisions.

Which of the next two or three years are we talking about.I can't see Essendon being beaten again this year but it is a strange game. They were awsome on Saturday night.Hawthorn would have beaten any other team in the comp on Saturday night but Essendon.Ten players who would be walk up starts for any other side in the comp and can still beat the so called top team by 11 goals. And before the Hawks supporters get upset,I am not having a go at their side.Just stating the truth.Absolutely AWSOME.

I'm not so sure about this anymore because they did have a poll on whether the Essendon v Hawthorn game should be moved from Colonial. I'm sure the AFL didn't give a stuff about public opinion in that decision, so I doubt they'd have a poll about it.

Incidentally around 80% of people thought the game should be moved, just shows how in touch the AFL Commission is.

Anchor Man, totally agree with everything you said. We played them Round 19 last year and lost by 14 goals, and I thought they were even better on Satruday because we have improved a lot, yet they still beat us by 11 goals with 6 or 7 players missing!

So it was 10 players now is it ? Did you include Darren Bewick (retired) like Mike Shehan did. I could say that ten players who were in Hawthorn's last game in 2000 were missing (salmon one of them) but I don't

Jonathan Robran could barely get a game at hawthorn yet he produced a good effort for you guys. Barry young had a great 1999 at essendon but couldn't get in at Hawthorn. It was a great result for essendon but a good portion of the pundits were fancying Hawthorn. Things were going quite well when Crawford got his sickening Injury. At the moment the sway is with essendon but there would be circumstances when Hawthorn might beat them. The Hawks are resting injured players rather than rush them back - they are aiming for september, make no mistake.

And Sheedy entertained the fact that hawthorn might win. Why else pull that James Hird stunt ? He also played most of his players in position - I think he gives the Hawks more respect than you guys do.
