why would we delist perry,

when during the trade week, there were strong rumours richmond were interested and we didnt cut a deal ?

given that this year is a strong draft. even a draft pick is valuable.

so is laidley's new policy : invest 2 years in a youngster, then give him up for nothing ?

i dont think so...

Why didn't we trade him? I'm guessing because Richmond offered us a box of fish for him. If a player doesn't want the contract offered to him and threatens to leave the club, we don't just go and take what ever is offered. Everyone piles the shyt on Norths trading ability but here is one time they played hard ball. Good on them I say. Perry will end up at Hawthorn or Carlton, regret the decision he made and fade away to a bit player in the VFL. If Perry is as good as some make out on here, then another club would have offered something half decent for him. 15 other teams obviously think along the same lines as JYD and the North drafting team. There are better kids in the draft.

I saw Perry play some ok games in the AFL, I also saw him play some absolute shockers in the VFL. He is highly over-rated on here.

The fact is, we have Watt, Petrie, Hay, Brown, and Arch who can all play tall in the back line. Add Smith to that list and Perry would be lucky to get a game next year. If he doesn't want a one year contract, bye-bye.

The comment about us looking for a good midfielder down in the draft, with the ability to re-draft Perry if there isn't one, could well have hit the mark. But I think the David Teague reference is the best.

I'm personally blown away by this news. I hope there's a credible explanation like "his heart's not in it" or "he was just not putting in at training" or "he turned up drunk and with a bad attitude" because everything I saw of Pez told me that he was well and truly worth persisting with.

Dont know why everyone is getting so uptight.
Joel Perry has not come on,not dominated in the VFL ,and in my opinion, would not make it in the AFL.
End of argument.

I think that most likely explanation will be that he didn't want to sign the contract that was offered to him.

In which case it would be fair enough. I'd rather Perry than Brown, end of story (as xpnorf would say).

I wouldn't want to delist Brown - the bigger question for me is why we would promote Perkins instead of keeping Perry.

A 21 year old 196cm backman or a 184cm plodding midfielder?

I hope Perkins suprises, but I have very low expectations.

maybe referring to Mcmahon? Perkins was delisted a while back.

Yes. Although for some reason it is an easy mistake to make, and probably still will be in ten years time.

Except Perkins is a few cm's taller.

Just to put you in the picture Perkins was delisted weeks ago

Maybe were in bed with Essendon and are planning to do a "Shifty Shonky" with the draft something along the lines of:

Perry to the Bummers (At pick 2 in the Uncontracted player draft)
Hansen to Bummers (At pick 2 in the ND)
Gumbleton to North (At pick 3 in the ND)

I fail to see how giving them Perry improves our draft outcome in this example

Meh. Looked ok at times in the AFL, when he was demoted some of his efforts in the VFL were ordinary.

We would have been no better off trading him as we would only have got a pick in the 70's. Not worth anythig more than that really

I would've liked him to stay one more year. Maybe the rumours of Richmond offering him two years are true. If that's the case we did the right thing as he definetly does nort warrant a two year deal.

If only we had taken the same stance with Sansbury 12 months ago............:(

And Brown this year?

I agree and would prefer to keep Perry.... But if you want someone badly enough (might not be Gumbleton) then a bit of draft tampering involving Perry could be a possible senario? Wouldn't be suprised if the Bummers picked Perry up as they haven't comitted to anyone and are a bit stretched down back. Dustin Fletcher is also coming towards the end of his career.

Agree with Mav's logic. Time will tell if North are the mugs for letting him go but just like many players, maturity is rapidily becoming the issue for the young kids. In JYD we trust. Go figure. :D

Well that's exactly right. The most ardent supporters of Perry on this forum suggest that he is simply "worth persisting with"... nothing more than that. But for how many years?

Maybe, just maybe, the brains trust did learn from Sansbury and have decided no more multi-year deals for players who have not cemented a place in the first 22. And given the amount of criticism around here regarding the Sansbury situation, surely that's a good thing.

Joel doesn't want a one year deal? Good luck son.

Perry is worth a two year deal, and didn't get one.

Sansbury has NEVR EVER EVER been worth a two year deal.

Evidence?

IMO his form from mid 03 to mid 05 was first rate. Especially his performances in the first half of 05.

I know he's been poor since, his form this year was terrible, I've been as critical as any one. He should have been banished to the two's at various stages this year. But I reckon he can play. That's why I would keep him.

As for Joel, I am disappointed that he's been axed, but I'm reading into it that he may have wanted a two year deal. Not on. If he gets it somewhere else good luck to him.

Before you say "oh, but Sansbury got a 2 year contract" I reckon that was a poor decision as well. Not an AFL player as far as I can see. But he's contracted so I suppose we stays.

FWIW, I'm actually more disappointed that LeCras has been cut. He could have been competive at CHF for 12-24 months while Gumbleton (hopefully!) finds his feet.
