That was abit of a surprise. No offence to Collingwood but I'd think most people would see going from CEO of 9 in Melbourne to CEO of a footy club as a step backwards.

Could mean Ed wants to come back to Melbourne.

Good point, but it would all depend on what Eddie and the board have decided to pay him. Certainly being up there in 9 is a big thing, but footy is gaining cred in the buisness world, especially big clubs like Pies. Maybe Eddies has sweetened the deal some other way?

ed just bought a house worth millions in sydney

I'll wait to see how it's all structured before giving any comment.

Eddie said on Triple M before the ANZAC day game that they are looking at a major rectrucuring of the club. The reason for this is that it is the increasing turnover the club has created in the last few years. I forgot what he said exactly but I think he said something about employing someone to look after non-club related stuff (like the pubs we own), and basically a bigger and better backroom structure.

CH. 9 Press Release.

Today the Nine Network Australia announced that Gary Pert would stand down from the role of Managing Director, Channel Nine Melbourne (GTV).

Pert has decided to pursue a full time career in football administration with the Collingwood Football Club.

Tony Shepherd will continue in his role as Station Manager of Channel Nine Melbourne.

Shepherd will assume responsibility for the day-to-day operations of GTV as the Nine Network does not propose to replace Pert's role of Managing Director in Melbourne.

This structure will be similar to the model of Channel Nine Brisbane (QTQ) and is in line with the Network’s management objectives.

Nine Network Australia, Executive Director, Jeffrey Browne, said: "Nine appreciates Gary's contribution to the Network and understands that he wishes to pursue a change in his career. We wish him well in this endeavour. We are fortunate to have Tony Shepherd who will assume many of the duties previously allocated to Pert's position.

Of his time at the Network, Pert said: "It’s been a fantastic opportunity to work with such a great team of people at Channel Nine. I have no doubt that Tony and the Executive Team will maintain the performance and culture that GTV9 is famous for."

Pert will leave Channel Nine Melbourne at the end of this week.

I think you should re-phrase that to an organisation that is turning over 50Mil a year!

Buying houses isn't necesarily a bad thing. They are one of the few items that appreciate in value. I don't think Ed's going to live in Sydney all his life because oh no he has a million dollar house up there.

I'd bet the folks house that he'll be a citizen of Melbourne within the next 5 years.

Turnover Smurnover. Ed uses turnover because it makes the footy club look big. Oh $50 million smackeroonies. Profit is a more meaningful figure but why would Ed use that to spruik the club - its only about 2 million. Great for a footy club but as a business it is miniscule.

...

He'd been there, what, 6 months ? Nine has fallen behind Seven in the ratings in Melbourne and Pert isn't being replaced. Not cut out for TV ? Perhaps he'll do better at Collingwood.

Perhaps, but perhaps 9 Melbourne don't need a general manager if he's not being replaced.

stupid comment really... all funds are obviously pumped back into the club. for a football club which essentially is a non-profit organisation its fair to gauge it on turn over. they dont have shareholders, they dont pay dividends...at the end of the day its a club.

The point I was trying to make is that Collingwood football club and any footy club for that matter is a small organisation and in most people's eyes the role Pert took was a step backwards from where he was. As Ed has said he's extremely passionate.

fair call...ill cop that on the chin.

perhaps there is a lot of potential for the club to make more $$$, hence the change. or as stated i think that pert was on the way out of ch 9.

He's not being replaced. He had no choice. He was going to be stood aside anyway, especially now that McGuire has gone. His resignation from Nine and appointment to C'wood save Nine a pay out i.e. C'wood subsidises Nine.

Not when you're talking about a non profit organisation. Any outstanding revenue will just be pumped into the club as expenditure and/or invested.

Profit figures can be very misleading and can be close to useless.
