Very good imo, would not hesitate in catching a train past midnight. Infact have done so on my own numerous times then walked home from the train station, did not feel unsafe once. Obviously would want to get off before Clarkson though, rest of the stations are great.
 
I catch the Joondalup line home around 10pm three or four nights a week, never a problem.

Its a terrible system in Perth - only a few lines, not enough trains and buses - especially at night when your trying to get home from the pub.

As for peak hour - getting to work in the city in diabolical. There was a small electrical fire the other day at peak hour which shut down half of the network. This is a regular occurance.

They are doing a lot of work to improve it though apparently. The Mandurah line is new, and they are sinking the railway line into Perth which will connect Perth and Northbridge.

Personally I dont get why they dont have more ferries going down the river. That would really help things.
 
Perth PT is pretty good for those that are well serviced by it.

The problem is the network is too limited (a function of the city being too spread out) so the people that are well serviced by it make up a small percentage of the population.

I live near a train station in a nice area so have no massive complaints. People continue to build 4 x 2s 50km from the city so people are going to continue to complain about the PT network.

I am in the same boat as you scotland, I live close enough to a train station in a nice area and I catch the train to the CBD during the week. Takes 20mins and never have any issues.

Most of the stations on the Joondalup line (bar Clarkson) are brand new and steaming with talent. I drive past Glendalough station on the freeway every morning and nearly have a car accident looking at the hot babes in their business attire.

Cant comment on SOR s**t holes. Just thank god everyday I dont live in Rocko.

I was down there once and saw a guy with a 2Pac neck tattoo, then a giant ROCKO tattoo down his arm, in old english font.

Add it to the list of government pipe dreams along with a new stadium, waterfront development, light rail from the city to west perth, light rail from the city to vic park/burswood.

They've started the waterfront crap. There's already a train line out to Burswood and Vic Park.

Light rail to Mirrabooka (aka Freetown)- why? Now that would be an interesting ride....

Politics - I'd hazard a guess that it is because its the only major area of Perth without nearby rail access (bar the hills). Otherwise it makes no sense - there's absolutely nothing along Alexander Drive to warrant light rail, all the patronage comes from low density suburbs on either side. It is better suited to a busway, unless you want to piss everyone off my forcing bus/tram transfers all along the route. A much better corridor for light rail would be Perth-Vic Park-Curtin Uni-Canning Bridge - huge demand within walking distance of the line, travelling along it - but unfortunately there's no votes in that...
 
Yep, that's the plan but politics gets in the way...

The link to QEII and UWA is overrated anyway - it will be a slower than buses to QEII as it will go through Subi and a buttload slower than the buses along Mounts Bay Road for UWA people... I think it is being planned as a 'place making' exercise rather than as providing any real transport benefit. Although it will be nice to be able to get from West Perth to Subi without either walking to the trains, or just walking straight there which takes about the same time

Northern line is going to Butler next maybe alkimos, and then Yanchep, so that will be interesting
 
Yep, Clarkson line is going to Butler then beyond up towards Yanchep.

There are plans (how detailed I don't know) to put a station in South Perth, about 1.5km from the Narrows near the zoo/golf club. That would be fantastic, IMO.

Would love to see the rail line from Bayswater to the airport go in. Bayswater is only a 10 minute train to the city, so to be able to get to the city from the airport in 15 minutes or so without paying $1,000 for a can would be great.
 
The South Perth station should be fairly simple (for a train station being added on to an existing track in the middle of the freeway) as they already have the space marked out for it. The track widens as you go down the line to fit in a future station and then narrows again once you go past it.

I was told by a pretty reliable source that the reason they didn't put a station in at south perth when they first built the mandurah line was because the residents of south perth and como were against it. That they were happy with the bus service/ferry service.

Will be interesting to see if things have changed.

My office window overlooks the esplanade and waterfront and in 7 days since the work has started. A massive digger has dug a smallish hole and has now filled the hole up again.
