Cars & Transportation Perth Railway thread...

They've started the waterfront crap. There's already a train line out to Burswood and Vic Park.

My office window overlooks the esplanade and waterfront and in 7 days since the work has started a massive digger has dug a smallish hole and has now filled the hole up again.

Hmmm, sounds like Perth's infrastrcuture works are in full flight!!! Bet that cost millions just to do that....and it was delayed by several months.

Am I the only one would rather not have more stations on the Mandurah line? I like that it is quite time competitive compared to the car (48min from Perth to Mandurah) and more stations will only slow things down. The South Perth station is pretty far away from the town centre and really only makes it a bit easier to get to the zoo. That's the problem you have when you build railways in freeway reserves...

They're only planning one more station. It's not going to add a significant amount to the journey time. Two minutes, maybe?

The only other stations they're planning within the next couple of decades are the aforementioned northern ones, as well as maybe connecting Thornlie to Cockburn via Canning Vale and Jandakot.

There's plans for more stations at Lakelands, Karnup, Aubin Grove and South Perth. So it's more than 2 minutes, particularly because you are breaking up long lengths of 160km/h running. It wouldn't surprise me if it added about 15min to journey time which makes the car look a lot better offpeak.

There's always a fine balancing act between not delaying through passengers and improving the catchment.

I actually don't mind the extra stations near Mandurah so much - it's the additional stations closer to Perth that delay more through passengers.

it was ridiculously sweet catching a bus from the cbd to the airport for only 3 bucks i think :D:D

and i travelled on the trains on most of the lines while i was there and was pretty good i thought

The Mandurah line isn't just there to get people from Perth to Mandurah and back. A high percentage of passenger numbers come from the first 4 stations (Canning Bridge, Bull Creek, Murdoch, Cockburn Central) and if you spread the stations out too much you just end up with overflowing car parks and people using the Freeway anyway.

I'm not surprised the residents of South Perth were against a station in the area. Perth is chock full of NIMBYs. People complain that it's a dull city then get up in arms whenever any development ideas are presented.

I was born and raised in perth but I havnt been back there for many years

I remember they were always talking about connecting the city and northbridge better by knocking down (i think) the central train station ?

What happened with that ?

It always seemed so obvious to me Perth would improve 1000 % if the flow of people between the city and northbridge was made easier.

South Perth you thought should have had a station when the line was created.

Right now it's a shemozzle but that is because work is well underway.

Perth Station isn't going anywhere but the rail lines exiting to the West are being sunk and the whole area boxed in by Wellington, William, Roe and Elder Streets is pretty much unrecognisable. The Entertainment Centre is gone, Perth Arena is nearly (it's taken long enough) finished and the area is one big construction site.

What a load of crap. I'm on the train now from rockingham to Perth and its packed. You do realise you mentioned the first 5 stops (you missed esplanande) out of a 10 stop line. Cockburn is pretty far from the city, 30 min drive on a good day.

For those who perhaps aren't from Perth who are reading this thread, let me show you the six (plus one) terminus' for each line in Perth.

Looking at these pics, Mandurah and Clarko ain't that bad.

I'd assume the stretch of train line running from Gosnells through Kelmscott is littered with smoking, drinking and drug taking ferals.

Is that a legitimate name, Cockburn?

It's about as funny as Innaloo.

Mount Nasura is a step up afaik - it's on the hills behind Armadale/Kelmscott so generally the people who can afford to move away from the railway and the suburbs on the western side of the line (e.g. Westfield/Camillo). Might be wrong on that count though.

Why does every 2nd train running during peak periods go between Perth and Cockburn then? There are regulary 3-car Mandurah services and 4-car Cockburn services in the morning. Of course the Mandurah trains are going to be full.

Esplanade is just an extension of Perth Underground. Passengers either get on/off at Perth or Esplanade depending where they need to get to in the city. It's not like like you get a packed train from Mandurah gets all the way to Esplanade for hoardes of people to get on to go to Perth.

Just outta curiosity, what's the filthiest station you've ever stopped off at?

From my experience I'd have to say Perth central station. Around 11pm its a full of dropkicks. Massive dust ups between the local inhabitants who congregate.

If I were to move there, I'd just go for the Scarborough, Trigg, Karrinyup and Morley areas rather than Kelmscott, Armadale or Gosnells although Armadale has the nice as looking shopping centre exterior.

So Perth Station = Bay 13.

Starting to get a feel of all the stations out there.

I remember the last time I went on that line there was a huge gap between stations.

When was the last time you caught the train on the mandurah line?

It's usually 3 or 6 car carriages.

In the morning they run a mixture of 3 and 6 car carriages from mandurah to Perth. Both are full by the time they make it to Cockburn.

Why transperth run a 3 car carriage during peak hour i don't know. The thing is packed and can't take anymore passengers once it arrives at Cockburn.

Southern suburbs are the fastest growing. It's only going to get worse.
