So now international cricketers are going down with leg injuries at Perths Optus staduim. The New Zealand quick stated its the total opposite to what he is used to. The ground running in is harder than the cricket pitch when he delivers the ball.

Thats right, the ground is harder than the cricket pitch.

What does this tell us about the management of the surface? The Perth curators, stadium management and the AFL has continued to bullsh!t the public and players saying the stadium surface is within guidelines.

They are lying to save face and save money.

The reason why 2020 games have been moved to more day time slots is because they over water the ground to try and soften it before AFL games. At night the extra water in the ground rises and makes the surface slippery. So many commentators this year asked 'has it been raining today as the players were slipping over a lot'. But changing to a day slot the surface is not as slippery. Shame they spent millions on lighting effects that are now being used less because teams dont want to play at night there.

What a debarcle.

When will they just admit there is a problem and resurface the thing and drop in more softer soil? Four (4cm) of topsoil is nothing.

What an embarrassment.

Many good points here and I agree just add some soil and soften it a little if for nothing else just peace of mind.
I however don’t buy it’s because of the oval that either fast bowler has pulled a muscle, just unlucky in my mind and these things happen. Could be many reasons why.

West Coast vs Melbourne game this season 4 players were concussed after landing on the surface, I suspect the hardness of the surface contributed to the intensity of the injuries, https://www.afl.com.au/news/38925/afl-match-report-west-coast-v-melbourne see injured.
Venables hasn't been back since.
This is in addition to the foot and soft tissue injuries.
And the light shows are a joke.

Its such an overrated soulless stadium. For weeks all we've heard is how Perth Stadium should usurp the MCG. Yeah right. Can't even pull a decent crowd for the so call marquee day night test. Might as well play the game at the WACA. Shocking surface. Shocking stadium

Another day yet another tender insecure Victorian..

dont you have to catch a bus to get there?...

No. There’s a train station specifically built for it right next to the ground. 5 minute walk from the platform to the gates.

It’s a wonderful stadium. The facilities are superb and the large open concourse space surrounding the first level makes it an easy place to get around even on big days of 60k crowds.

Australia’s biggest pub right next to the ground with something like 2000 max capacity.

The turf issue continues to be a worry.

They have obviously stuffed it up but won’t admit it. Embarrassing.

Another bumper crowd at the new home of cricket in Australia. Build it and they will come....

I wonder if AAMI stadium have those seat coverings from Port Adelaide games. Need to fill some spaces. Not a great visual on tv

I went to the U2 concert the other week and the poor bastard in front of me was bouncing around on the turf most of the night, saw him leave with a bit of a limp in his walk at the end poor bastard.

Optus claims another victim

To be fair, he’s nearly 60s and has been playing concerts for over 30 years.
We are all human, even Bono.

A friend of a friend was one the senior consultants who worked with Multipex and other sub-contractors on the Perth stadium construction.
He is not all surprised with the issues and concerns regarding the hardness of the surface.

He says the design foundation of the surface is pretty much what is used with Astro Turf hockey and soccer fields, where the focus is on drainage and/or reticulation. Aside from a sand base, which is hard in itself, there is also a top layer of fine loam/gravel deployed...!

Suggest this photo below be sent to Gil and others at the AFL...

I recall reading about it.

60 cm of gravel shown in the photo.

Then 30 cm of sand. Like what you put under concrete slabs for a firm foundation.

Then 4cm of top soil then turf.

4cm of top soil..........there is your problem.

The stadium is world class.

The playing surface is not.

Is top soil really that more expensive that sand, no idea?
