Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium)

The pitch looked terrible. Not sure if because it was wet coinciding with the three straight days of sport but it’s a shocking look on the pitch management. Seems like the mixture of Astro and grass isn’t doing the job

It's looks terrible because of the amount of traffic on it and the rain we've been having.

Since last month the ground has hosted:

Fremantle v Brisbane
Fremantle v Hawthorne
West Coast v Geelong
West Coast v Essendon
State of Origin
Wallabies v England
Fremantle v Port
West Coast v Carlton
Fremantle v Sydney
Crystal Palace v Leeds
Manchester United v Aston Villa
West Coast v St Kilda

There's been little time for the ground to recover, especially after two Rugby matches.

is it hot in the stadium? i was thinking of this weeks big basj final on a 40 degree day starting mid arvo
There's more shade than the WACA but you don't get the sea breeze late in the day. The translucent roof also created a greenhouse like effect on level 5. I was more conformable sitting in the sun at ground level.

Flew up from Melbourne to see the Pies take on the Eagles, first time going to the ground. The stadium is fine, there's nothing wrong with it, but I felt like the precinct around the stadium is a bit soulless, certainly compared to the MCG or Adelaide Oval. Understand it is a much newer site though.

Walking into the ground I didn't get that anticipation I feel when I walk from Richmond Station or when you walk across the Torrens.

Many agree with you, its got nothing around it other than the Camfield. There needs to be restaurants and bars built along the foreshore and maybe even DFO as well.
But to be honest that is just how Perth is. We don't get called wait awhile for nothing.

We don’t even allow “ Turn left at any time when safe to do so “ at traffic lights.
Even Adelaide have had it for over twenty years.
WA is Wait Awhile indeed.

It will happen eventually.

Swan and Canning Rivers have a surface area of around 55 km2, so while it's no Sydney Harbour it's the same surface area as Port Jackson Bay.

If Belmont Park redevelopment is a success I could imagine something substantial happening closer to the stadium that brings in more diversity in venues.

It's actually world class.

but I felt like the precinct around the stadium is a bit soulless,

Yes, because some decided to build it on an old rubbish tip.

certainly compared to the MCG or Adelaide Oval.

Huh ? Nothing close to MCG and it's a walk across the river in Adelaide.

Understand it is a much newer site though.

You're a genius at observation.

Yes, you definitely feel if you're not going to get mugged in Perth.

I turned up to Perth in the 90s and loved how you could change lanes without looking, even on the free way, as the traffic was so light. I loved even more that not one person in WA could merge.

The lack of progress in WA is so bad it’s as if the other states all pay millions every year to make sure we don’t do anything that may attract visitors.
I been in Perth since 1983 and Riverside drive and the south Perth side of the river are iretty much still identical.
Bith sides should be covered like a Southbank in Melbourne.
Should be a cable cart to kings park, water playground in the city probs at Langley park. Bars, restaurants, hotels.
In 40 years they have done the bell tower and elizebeth Quay.
No wonder the ones that do come here piss off down south.

Definitely helps AO that the city and Casino is just across the bridge.

Perfect spot for a stadium really.

Haven't been to optus but been around that area before it was built and it's quite a walk to the heart of the city.

Which is why it should of been at the WACA

The infrastructure cost of getting mass transit to the WACA made that a much more expensive option.

There were a lot of cost savings on building, running costs and synergy benefits with the WACA.
Any transport mechanism for the WACA would be much less than the reported $600 million for Optus Stadium.
Basically Perth serves as your transport and parking hub. All that would be needed would be
a light rail service and more frequent buses.

The WACA doesn't have any more social infrastructure.

The WACA doesn't have any more social infrastructure.

Nobody had an interest in perpetuating the transport disaster that was Subiaco Oval by undercooking transit to the new stadium.

Any stadium at WACA would likely have involved a much more expansive heavy rail solution involving an underground spur from the Armadale line.

Perth has no light rail network and that isn't changing.

Transport wasn't a "disaster" as you put it.
Subiaco Oval needed a railway upgrade if it was going to carry the extra attendees.
Subiaco Oval had the social infrastructure and certain amount of parking
but Subiaco was probably the least favoured site option for the new stadium.

Any stadium at WACA would likely have involved a much more expansive heavy rail solution involving an underground spur from the Armadale line.

Where did you get that idea from ?
The WACA like Subiaco would have less need (than Optus)for public transport especially at the crucial final siren rush.

Perth has no light rail network and that isn't changing.

Probably not, but a light rail direct from the Quay railway, ferry port and bus terminal along the esplanade would have made a lot of sense and not that expensive to build. It could have been used for tourism during the week.

There were many other sites for the stadium that were swallowed up by other developments
and many potential sites that were dismissed or never investigated because they were outside of the square.
The fact is that the WACA was NEVER going to be chosen as the WACA didn't want to come to the party.
