Perth Stadium

I believe this also. It will either sit therre idle for a few years and come the next East Perth Power Station-esque site until the govt decides to do something with it or the stadium project budget will blow out and Emperor Barnett will 'come up' with the brilliant idea of flogging it off to fund the shortfall.

Or Swan Brewery site.

Thanks god it's got 600 bike racks !!! Phew

That must have been the sealer for the bid

Not sold on 60000. Sure they could upgrade it, but that wouldn't happen for decades. 60000 just seems small.

That's about 3% of the population of the entirety of Perth (about 1.7 million people). It's fine for now.

As a comparison, Melbourne has over 4 million people.

It's tragic how badly schools and hospitals are underfunded.
It's just stupidity or ignorance in WA's case.

Our schools are funded greater than any other state on a per student basis. That's why the WA government were alone in railing against the federal funding changes in 2013. Whilst the other states below the threshold were rolling in the new funding dollars, because WA actually valued education and sacrificed elsewhere to fund it to high levels, they were given a bag of twisties. I guess we should have underfunded it, invested elsewhere and then revelled in the riches too.

We've also just gone through a massive investment in hospitals which is still continuing - a new super hospital, new children's hospital, new district hospitals (e.g. Midland) and upgrades. Anyone complaining about lack of hospital investment in WA is a moron.

Perth is over 2 mil now but agreed it's more than enough, other than Derbies I honestly don't think it will get close to 60k most weeks.

Google gives 1.7, citing that it's 2010 figures.

I imagine it would depend as well on how you define 'Perth'.

60k is perfectly fine and would make it the 3rd largest stadium in Australia IIRC. The ability to upgrade is key.

Those suggesting we need an MCG size stadium are nuts.

I am looking forward to seeing what effect this will have on East Perth's "vibrancy", place has been a cemetery for yonks.
funnily enough thats just how the residents like it. I lived in East Perth for 3 years, and because the river acts as a natural boundary, there is virtually no traffic or noise, despite the fact that the suburb is literally less than a kilometre from the city centre. The businesses will still get a decent injection financially from this, but again because of the river wont have the usual BS associated with traffic congestion.

Real estate especially units in East Perth will go through the roof.

That's the balancing act that most don't fully appreciate. Whilst we hate debt, we actually over hate it from a government point of view - development $ through a certain level of debt is actually very good for the economy - it creates much $ in the economy through the multiplier effect, more wealth, taxes etc etc. as well as the real benefits $ and standard of living we enjoy from that development.
i know what your saying but we had $hitloads of $ from mining royalties that should've given us THE BEST infrastructure in Australia & those who have travelled to Melb/Syd will admit that we are so far behind that it is not funny.

Im not into politics but i vaguely remember Kennett once said 'we will build and they shall come'

wa politicians (from both sides) seemed to have the mindset 'when they come, we'll consider building something, half the size/level of what we need'

Some incorporate Mandurah into the metro region (which is stupid) but last figures I saw had us at 1.9 in November some time. Dig them up if I can be bothered.

Hopefully they open some more seats up for general public. Trying to get tickets for subi is a nightmare.

The problem with Jeff was that he also went down the 'if it's government owned we can sell it' route as well. Although some things had to be sold with the finances of the state.

But yes with the amount of mining boom money in WA lately it was certainly the time to invest in some smart infrastructure.

We definitely don't need MCG size, but we need a stadium where your supporter of football can decide on the day that they'd like to go to the football.
When Eagles/Dockers are travelling OK, I (&any other supporter of football) can not go to the game, unless we become members
Football isn't just about the members of a certain club

Why deny the general public a chance to go & watch a game just because they aren't members of 1 of the clubs playing.

I love watching football live no matter who's playing.
I would go to watch Eagles V Coll, just cause i like watching football. I don't support either team, but i'd pay to watch the game

The state was in the $hit big time & something had to be done, he/his party, just had the balls to do it.

No we don't. How many premium leagues in the world operate on that basis? Very few I'd suggest. The suggestion that we need to build a stadium so anyone at anytime can go on a whim is absolutely absurd.

Then go watch a WAFL game. They're very enjoyable, cheaper entry, plenty of room to move, cheap full strength cans, better and cheaper food and you can listen to the coaches address or have a kick during breaks.
