Rugby league Reds are back, on war footing
8th February 2007, 8:30 WST

Western Reds might be gone from rugby league but the WA Reds are on the way in.

WA Rugby League chief Geoff Baldwin last night revealed the name of the local team to enter the second tier Jim Beam Cup next year as part of a long-range plan to restore a Perth side to the National Rugby League.

Baldwin said the Reds name had been retained because the public automatically associated it with rugby league, and local followers of the sport associated it with unfinished business.

He revealed that the logo of the new team was based on that of the old Western Reds.

The intention was for the Reds to be back in the national competition by 2012.

“Coincidentally, the name WA Reds results in an acronym of ‘war’ and for the new team it is appropriate as we embark on a full and measured assault on the eastern seaboard to bring WA back into the national spotlight of rugby league,” he said.

“Five years ago we started the journey back to the NRL. Our initial goals were to develop a strong local competition and become financially secure, and that’s done.

“Now we’re into stage two, to form a WA team and improve to the point we can present to the NRL a case they can’t argue against.”

The new team’s head coach, Chris Dever, and conditioning coach Matt Fuller are former Western Reds players and have launched a development program to get local players up to speed for next year’s entry into the NSW-based competition.

The Sydney Roosters sent a contingent of NRL players, including Brad Fittler and captain Craig Fitzgibbon, to help kick off the new side at last night’s launch.

WARL general manager Bill Nosworthy recently returned from a recruiting trip which netted former North Queensland Cowboys player Michael Fairweather.

Nosworthy also persuaded eight players who had represented WA at junior level to return home, including Newtown premier grade player Ryan Dixon, South Sydney under-19 member Jacob Buck and Jamie Lamaro, who played for Central Coast in the Jim Beam Cup.

“The local clubs have been doing a lot of recruiting themselves and there will be at least 20 players from other States playing in our competition this year in the hope of breaking into the Reds,” Nosworthy said.

Former Brisbane, Canberra and Cronulla player Darren Matt was on the verge of committing to Perth when he got a lucrative one-year deal to play in Wales.

All we need now is the Western reds and the Adelaide rams to join the NRL and make it truly National. So we can compete in the ratings war with the AFL on GF day, on who gets the biggest ratings,I know the NRL can get over 5 million watching the GF Australia wide ,but for some reason the T.V stations in these states won't have a bar on RL.

It doesn't make sense! The financial costs will be massive and they will fold. Also, how many players will be available for a trip to NSW every second week. The Jim Beam Cup seems to be going from strength to strength but unless there is something I don't know about, it doesn't make sense (but it will be good to see them running around again)

There was talk the JBC would get some games on TV, I haven't heard anything for a while though.

If it was going to send them broke, I don't think the WARL or the NSWRL would've let them join, someone has to be paying for it though.

The ARL is paying for the airfares and accomodation. They need 500 members by the end of 2008 for the ARL to continue thier commitment IIRC. The ARL means business about Western Expansion. I wouldn't be suprised if they ended up propping the club up if they gained NRL admission like the AFL did for the Northern Clubs or it currently does for a swathe of Victorian clubs, without or without the support of the News Corp Faction.

They are going to find life even more difficult than last time due to the presence of the Force.
I reckon it'll make it easier since 'rugby' will be fully established once the Perth team is (hopefully) ready to enter the NRL.

They already seemingly like Union, and theres no reason they won't attend 13 more games of the highest quality rugby.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm led to believe that the Reds didn't have much actual adult support, but rather the older people still supported the clubs they had been supporting before the admission of the Reds. Rather, thier kids supported the Reds, but once they aligned with Super League, the Adults refused to support the club and they subsequently fell under the weight of not being able to sustain themselves.

I don't see them having this problem this time. There's also enough Northerners of both English and Australian Varieties to get this club off the ground once (or if, whatever. The last few years of the British game has renewed my faith in RL) it hits the NRL.
