He was one of those guys that had "potential" in spades, just never realised it . He would kick double figure goal tallies from full forward and I think made a state team as a fullback once but was never consistent enough. Too much of a nice guy really.

I don't recall Bubner booting double figure goal tallies, but he was a very fine athlete who had to shelve an athletics career to pursue football. He also had very strange hair.

Peter was an outstanding athlete - 400 meters hurdles from my memory. Taught in a country High School - was particularly useful in staff student relays where he gave the staff a chance. I believe he was part of the Retention Scheme running in the SANFL in the 80s. Played for Centrals under Knuckles Kerley and did not really fit with the ethos. Finished his SANFL career with Sturt. I don't remember the Carlton bit, but remember some Richmond officials visiting the school trying to get him moving across to Melbourne.

:D

When I think of Peter Bubner I think of 2 things, the hair and probably a picture in the Budget of him leaning back into a kick, tall and lithe.

Fair footballer and like some have said maybe didnt get as much out of himself as others would have liked

Does anyone have details of Peter Bubner's League Career at both Centrals and Sturt?? Was he a 200 Gamer or thereabouts? If he was around these days, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him crack a game at AFL level, as has been said he was athletic and quite skilful. As a lot of toughness has been umpired out of the game ( particularly at AFL level..), his lack of real grit wouldn't matter now!!

That might sound a bit harsh, but I didn't consider " Bubs " as a tough nut..much LOL! But to give him credit, he was a pretty decent player on his day, but was perhaps a little inconsistent. Can also recall his brother David playing with Centrals, methinks he played a few seasons out there! I wonder what his Career breakdown is? He was somewhat shorter than Peter, but dare I say it a bit tougher than his " gentle giant " older bro...

199 games for the Doggies, 28 for Sturt and 7 for SA makes 234 career games from 1980 to 1992

Think David Bubner got 20 or so games(aint got the right yearbook in front of me to give an exact total atm)
