I'd encourage everyone in this thread to volunteering some time with organisations that help to support asylum seekers that are here in the community to get a real look at the impact of some of the Immigration department's recent punitive policies. If you're interested to know what is available in your area, let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

Wish I could like this more! I have done it and it was heart wrenching to hear some of the stories.

The Burmese government, largely led by the military, are Buddhist. The ones being ethnically cleansed are Rohingya, Muslim. The Burmese military government in the past has had a proven, systemic track record of cleansing out the undesirables from Burma, from the Karen to the Shan (both of whom are decidedly not Muslim, for the record), so to argue that the Rohingya are somehow asking for it is puerile rubbish.

The Australian Federal Police is currently raiding the Australian Workers' Union offices in Melbourne and Sydney.

The investigation relates to whether donations made to activist group GetUp were authorised under union rules.

GetUp have been investigated twice and found not to be an associated entity. This is just the Libs having a third crack. Having left views does not make one an associated entity to the Greens. If you want to label GetUp an associated entity of Labor then you can add the Mining Council and business groups as associated entities of the Libs.

Trying to unseat Dutton isn't motivated by trying to help the Labor party. It's motivated by wanting to get a particularly nasty piece of work out of politics.

Getup isn't an "associated entity" of the Labor party for this. In fact they are acting in the national interest and should be applauded.

Whilst taking into account the "wink" the Feds are under order from the ROC which has been set up by Turnbull and co.

This is about unauthorised union transactions/donations to getup. It's the AWU under investigation here not Getup, though they will be questioned. It does all seem to be a bit convenient with ROC under the Libs. Still if I were a low paid AWU member I'd be fairly pissed to see fees being paid to support or donate to getup to that amount.
