It will be 2

Surely they're not stupid enough to blow up the party

Um, I think they may well be. Dutton's door stop after Campbell's speech didn't sound like he's really learnt anything in the past 10 months.
Said something like "people are sick of this govt".

Yep, so sick the ALP state govt were voted back in, and now Aston is a historical achievement... against him. Sky already in double down mode, and Dutton thinks they speak to the "quiet Australians" on his behalf.

His interview on Insiders with Speers tomorrow will be interesting. I suspect his "learnings" will be like Campbell's speech tonight "Australia needs a Liberal govt".

Um, no, actually we don't.

Does anyone have a wedding day photo of him? Surely this is not the best smile he could do. Otherwise he will permanently scar anyone aged 0-10 and put them off voting for the Libs for the rest of their lives. I don't think surgery could even fix it :skull:

Not sure that's a smile. I think that's a face usually only his wife would see... if she left the light on!

He has had the bad luck to resemble the movie villain for gen z (Voldemort)

It's going to be fascinating to see where he goes from here strategically, because I think he can go one of three ways:

1. Completely blow it up and start again, strongly consider changing his stance on key issues to listen to what the public is apparently telling them.

2. Make a couple of concessions and scale back the culture wars, make a few signs that they're keen to be more collaborative.

3. Dig in and double down, make zero concessions and hope the Government stuffs up (the 2008-13 playbook).

I'd bet anything that they'll go the third option. Good luck with that.

And that's the problem with the public responses that people like Dutton, Wolahan and Hume have to make after a catastrophe like last night and why people like Tony Barry are so great for the coverage to provide some actual analysis.

It'll be fun watching Dutton as it will probably be more of what we've seen over the past year or two for the Liberal Party in terms of self-awareness and understanding of the people they want to represent. It'll probably go something like this.

"Was it a bad choice of candidate?"
Not at all, Roshena Campbell is one of the most candidates the people of Aston could ever want as a new neighbour. One of the best candidates to ever get a 7% swing against her and lose her seat to the Government for the first time in 100 years.

"So it was a poor campaign?"
No way, our team and volunteers are the best at what they do in the world, they perform miracles every election.

"So there must be an issue with the Party's general position on key issues for the voters, maybe the negativity towards a Government that's been here for 10 months and it's problems tackling issues that arguably you could have had a crack at during the 10 years that you were in power?"
No we think it's important that Labor is called to account for the atrocities committed on the Australian people since May 2022. Especially after the absolute dream run people had with ScoMo running the place.

"Are people tuning out your negativity on the referendum on the Voice and the ongoing culture wars that appear to be tearing your party apart?"
No there are serious issues with the details of the Voice and we think that the culture wars are a great way to win back the millenial/General Z vote.

"Why do Victorians hate your party to the extent that you're essentially irrelevant now in the metro areas and the Nationals could threaten to be the dominant Coalition member in Victoria after the next Federal election? Every under 50 Victorian MP you have is now in an ultra marginal (formerly known as 'heartland') seat and you've been in free-fall in the state compared to where you were pre-COVID. Do you think the 'most locked down city in the world' narrative has been a success?"
Most locked down city in the world. Referendum on Dan Andrews. Bring back East West Link.

It's going to be great. It was amazing to watch Wolahan almost get clean bowled by the full toss "What does this say about Peter Dutton's leadership?" And then his response to the other obvious "No doubts that he's the right person to lead the party into the next election...?" with the honest (and yet amazing) "Oh, well there's always doubts..." before he caught himself and reverted to the party line. His own party can't imagine a universe where Peter Dutton becomes Prime Minister of Australia, but nor can they see anyone else as a more viable leader of the Liberal Party.

The lnp need archer to lead. She is their only chance to reclaim the centre. They should be aware in the fed election she was the only lib to improve her margin

Insiders had a compilation of Aston media coverage, someone suggested that Liberals are looking at Sussssssan Ley as replacing Dutton if he failed......

And the same applied to every capital city in Australia.

Dutton keeps referring to Queensland because it is the one state where more than 50% of the population live outside of the capital.

He has zero understanding of what matters most to the majority of Australians and his party continues its lurch further and further to the right to appeal to an ever shrinking % of voters.

Nikki Sava saying the obvious - "if they drift further right they lose long term"

Raf Epstein saying the obvious -"it's a fringe proportion who are worked up about trans people, it's not a major issue for most"

All panelists saying the obvious - "there's no one credible left in the party to be an alternative leader"

Dutton
  • blames Victoria as the reason that lnp can’t get votes there
  • won’t show policy now because “people forget” hasn’t the motto been get a message/ policy and repeat and repeat
  • claims private conversations contradicting everything publicly said by others (solicitor general, construction industry) - this seemed even too farfetched even for speers
  • avoided the question on what he thinks the voice would focus on, reiterating concerns on constitutional wording and trying the fear of change view

It's #3. He's not for turning.
Oblivion, meet Dutton!

Waking up to this article: Dutton's surprise response after historic loss in Aston by-election

This line caught my eye
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has vowed to rebuild the Liberal party into an “election-winning machine” after suffering a catastrophic and historic loss in the Aston by-election.

He totally has to do that. I am so looking forward to the type of "machine" this deep thinker dreams up

Not even looking much like Voldemort these days. Looking more and more like a tortoise that's been scooped out of its shell. Probably apt.
