Peter Dutton - How Long?

The lnp need archer to lead. She is their only chance to reclaim the centre. They should be aware in the fed election she was the only lib to improve her margin

Archer is a nice local MP but she will probably become independent before her time is up.

There's no way she'll become Liberal leader in the current party. They hate her, plus realistically she has no national clout to lead in any case.

The one solace for the Liberals is Raf Epstein's final comment.

He pointed out the Voice may be leading in the polls now but so was the Republic. You can't argue to voters that the Voice is such a critical groundbreaking step for our country, but then say "don't worry it's not that important it won't have much effect on your lives".

Dutton hangs on now because there's no one left to challenge, but if the Voice fails then he gets a boost. It's perceived by the right to be a rejection of "wokeism" and falls right up his alley.

Here's hoping that the by-election loss means that Roshena* will resume her comic fortnightly column in The Age. The newspaper that described Campbell as a "former columnist" about 10 days after her last entry when she was pre-selected.

Every second Monday offered the joy of reading Campbell in The Age and, turning to the AFR, a dose of delusional Downer and, possibly, some Amanda Stoker too. Although Mandy was (and is) usually on a [see you next] Tuesday.

* Ms Campbell is a Melbourne City councillor, commercial barrister and Liberal Party member. The views expressed are her own and any coincidence with the views of the editors and management of this masthead is a pure and unlikely coincidence.

What you say is true.

Also true is that the rejection of Indigenous recognition is now the base from which the Federal Liberal leader takes his claim for political survival says all you need to know about where the liberal and national parties now stand in Australia and how far to the right they have shifted.

Bearing in mind that it was John Howard who, 16 years ago, became the first prime minister to promise constitutional recognition of the special status of Aboriginal peoples.

Given that its ok for the Libs to not follow the party line, loyalty is earned, not assumed. Archer will battle to win loyalty.

Never going to happen. She might as well be Karl Marx as far as the conservatives are concerned.

well, what do you see as a path that the libs will take. Becuase from what I see the majority of who is left is their regional rump who basically have no care or regard for the cities (witness Joyce's quote that he could "smell the burning flesh in Melbourne"). Policy around regional rump is not policy that will win the cities, and as a city person I often begrudge the (rorts and waste) spent on regional areas that seems to just line the pockets of donors (or as in Angus Taylors case the family business)

I dont believe there is one opinion within the Libs, lots of very different views that are often self serving. Throw in a touch of ambition & they havent hit the bottom.
Personally I think they need to stick with Dutton & hope they hit the bottom hard enough to bounce off. Only Albo can deliver that bounce in this term of Government, courtesy of the effects of inflation & cost of living, both of which are out of Albo's control.
Is the lining of the pockets of donors related to dancing to the tune of a Union leaders direction, because wage increases are reputed to drive inflation.

profit margins being jacked up has a higher effect on inflation than wages
and union membership being through the floor tends to also argue against wages being the issue. Its not the 70s anymore (which might be the experience colouring your view)

Andrews hasn't missed ......

From The Guardian:

'Nasty, bigoted outfit': Andrews says Coalition out of touch after Aston loss

Andrews says Aston voters have “worked out” the Liberal party is a “nasty, bigoted outfit” focused on their own “insipid, nasty little version of bigotry”.

The Liberal party are a nasty, bigoted outfit and people have worked them out. That might be why they keep losing. They don’t want people focused on the persecution of trans people. They want people focused on the cost of living.
Andrews says he watched opposition leader Peter Dutton on ABC Insiders this morning discuss the result in Aston and said he believed the Coalition had fundamentally misread the electorate.

I saw Mr Dutton this morning, give an interview and frankly, some of the most extraordinary commentary I’ve heard for a long time. This notion that families in the suburbs are up in arms about trans issues.
Andrews said he believed that voters in Aston “might remember what happened last year where in the state election, the Liberal party cuddled up with racists”.

Don’t pretend that you’ve got anything to offer other than your own insipid, nasty little version of bigotry.
[…]
To sit there on Insiders this morning and say in his judgment, his finely tuned political judgment, families in the suburbs are out about and are fundamentally concerned about transphobia.
No. It tells you everything you need to know.

Yes the 70s are burnt in, although the 80s did more damage to the wallet. Lets never go back there.

What are you talking about? You evidently can't.

Wages have fallen in real terms for decades.
But technically risen in dollar terms which means unscrupulous business owners point to increase wage cost while adding massive mayo to jack up profit margins yet still evade tax.

They clearly have quotas on how many times they use the word woke.

Rohan Dean is a gift to Labor - complete moron
And complaining to Sky News host Rita Panahi that the loss in Aston was because the Libs put in a 'woman of colour'?

Feck me - this is a parody isn't it?

His face resembles a melting ice-cream cone.

With luck, it'll start melting any day now.
He is an ex add man - colour me surprised. Do you actually need any relevant qualifications to get a job on Sky or do you just need to prove you are a bigoted campaigner?

The Sky After Dark links to the LNP is seriously unhealthy. The tail is wagging the dog.

And the same applied to every capital city in Australia.

Dutton keeps referring to Queensland because it is the one state where more than 50% of the population live outside of the capital.

He has zero understanding of what matters most to the majority of Australians and his party continues its lurch further and further to the right to appeal to an ever shrinking % of voters.

But Queenslanders have rarely voted in a coalition state govt since sir Joh. Maybe sir Joh was the prototype for what the coalition is now?
