I heard from a very good source that German is set to become the next assistant I also hear that Neil Balme practically has the director like job. I have no problem with the 'Embalmer' but I have a problem with Germo. For those of you who don't live in WA you may not be aware of his violent temperament which was exhibited this year when he physically attacked a 14yr old supporter of my club(east freo). He also punched a West Perth supporter at Muckinbudin a year ago. Is this man who can be deemed violent right for geelong? It also should be noted that his coaching record isnt as good as it looks. He coached Subiaco to Premierships purely because the lions have the most money due to a dodgy WAFC deal. To be truthful anyone could have coached those premierships and does anyone remember how he went at Peel? Not to good, was he?

Should we get German?

i don't know much about german, though if he's punching fans then you can be sure he'll give the players what-for when they fall out of line next season, instead of coddling them like bomber tends to do..

Out of sight, out of mind

IF PETER German was one of St Kilda's reported 50-odd possible coaches, he didn't advance to stage two.

There was no contact, formal or informal; not even an inquiry about any possible interest.

Not even after German's Subiaco finished on top of the WAFL home-and-away ladder for the fourth year running.

Nor after Subi won its second premiership in three seasons, taking his record at the club to 72 wins from 88 games.

While the WAFL may not be what it was before the creation of West Coast in 1987 and Fremantle more recently, it remains the vibrant senior competition in a powerful football state.

The German-coached Western Australia ran South Australia to 16 points this year, indicating little difference between the states.

While the Saints are seen to have done well securing former Sydney assistant Ross Lyon as successor to Grant Thomas, it is hard to believe someone with German's history wasn't even listed for consideration.

German, 41, has a record that stands up with the best of any who haven't coached at AFL level.

It stretches 12 seasons and across three states, and includes terms as an assistant with two AFL clubs: Hawthorn and West Coast.

He is the latest victim of the fluky nature of the search for coaches. In his case, it is out of sight, out of mind.

For others like Brian Royal and Tony Elshaug, they simply drop off the radar, even though they are more experienced and, presumably, wiser than ever.

Fortunately for German, word of mouth has created the chance for him to return to AFL level as an assistant.

He has confirmed an interview on Monday with a club he wouldn't name, while Geelong chief executive Brian Cook told the Herald Sun on Thursday German would be interviewed for a vacancy at Skilled Stadium.

"I'd love to get back into it, for sure," German said yesterday.

"I'm a career coach, there's no doubt about that."

He agreed with the Lyon approach of waiting for clubs to come calling rather than actively and publicly courting a role.

"When I played, I didn't mind pumping myself up, now, as a coach, I'd rather let my record do the talking," he said.

German, who played 185 games for North Melbourne, started his coaching career with Tasmanian club Burnie in 1995.

In eight seasons with Burnie, Peel Thunder (WAFL) and Subiaco, his teams have won 124 of 172 games, a winning percentage of 70.

Ken Judge, his boss at both Hawthorn and West Coast, said yesterday German "deserves an opportunity".

"He's got an outstanding record and he's got a creative footy mind.

"He's a development coach, too. Kids like (Mark) Nicoski really rate him for his impact on his development. He's definitely not a 'yes' man, either. He's got good views on footy and he's strong on them.

"I'm happy to say his association with me, when I got the chop at West Coast, probably cost him his job; just because he was linked to me."

I would be devastated if we had Neil Balme as Football operations manager.

Clearly, Jarrod Molloy would be an ideal man for the job.

Has there been any talk about Mark Bickley as assistant coach???

Dear Cat Fans,

I went to Perth for an away game with the Roos last year and attended a Roos Breakfast over there. I sat next to Germo. He will be great for you mob. From the sound of it he refuses to take excuses or second best from the players and is a hard arse. The only problem he might have is he hates the media and regularly tells them to get ****ed. He told me that he would never get a job with West Coast because they never enforce team discipline on their superstars - wish he was coming to North

Why ???

As a player he played in shocking sides for Fitzroy, got the a@@ from the lions and couldn't get a game at Collingwood.

As a media person he worked for SBS. Yes that great AFL institution SBS.

As a coach he was an assistant at the Oakleigh Chargers, hardly something to hang your hat on.

and i hope he has toughened up from his junior days...the guy had a propensity to sook like no other.

He's got a good record, and if he is a hard man, even better

I would like to see him get stuck into a few soft, inconsistent, underperforming players (Kelly & SJohnson spring to mind) and turn them around.

Can you please inform me how my facts were incorrect, I was an eye-witness to the East Fremantle fight and I know 2 people who were at the West Perth game. Am I wrong about him coaching Peel to a spoon to?
