Good point.odd time for the notion of professionalism to pop up to Pete after the last couple of years incidents
Rightly or wrongly the game is structured to within an inch of its life, the game has moved on from decades past.
I'm surprised given the clubs history they can't get a Ruck coach down to Alberton even at a voluntary level, not everyone wants monetary compensation for their services.
Picture this worst case scenario:
1) Lycett is unavailable due to injury early in the season.
2) Hayes rucks against Nic Nat R1, Grundy R2 and Gawn R3 and gets pansted.
3) Ladhams plays extremely well for Sydney Rounds 1 to 3 for Sydney.
Think of the media focus on Hayes not to mention the social media focus on this forum, it could stifle his confidence before he's even had the ability to build any.
Learn on the job with an experienced Ruck coach in your corner as well.
From what I've read about Hayes he is a completely different Ruckman to Lycett who relies on 'bash and crash' and wearing his opponent down physically. Lycett isn't your Brendan Lade type tap Ruckman, he hasn't developed that skill himself so I'd question his ability to teach it to Hayes.
I would be happy for him to have a ruck coach. But as painful as it is to say, our financial situation has probably prevented that.
Even so, he can call Brogan for help. Bassett could probably even convince Sam Baulderstone to have a chat with him about ruck craft. Just because no one is officially on the panel doesn't mean there aren't informal options.
He has Lycett there who may not be the most technically proficient ruck but would have the knowledge. Not all teachers are great players and vice versa.
He has a midfield coach who will instruct him where to put the ball and a midfield group that knows where they want it.
End of the day, I'm hoping he doesn't get thrown in the deep end with an injury to Lycett and he gets a couple of pre-season games in and some support games under Lycett.
Nobody should throw him under a bus if he gets beaten by greats of the game. So really everyone will know it's a learning experience for him.
Back on Ladhams, let's be real. He didnt go to Sydney because he wanted a great ruck coach in Cox. He went to Sydney because Port pushed him out the door and no one else was interested.

Ladhams was gonna play #2 to Lycett and once Hayes got up to speed ladhams would of played #2 to him.
Lycett is already a premiership ruckman but I know what ya mean... Backing in Hayes and ladhams would of been the brave decision... We ain't brave.another way to look at the problem is, Lycett will never be a premiership ruckman and Ladhams has improvement subject to dedication
for the endeavour of "we exist to win premierships", did we make the right decision? for the development of Hayes yes but I'd rather have kept ladhams and traded lycett
Pete loves the club, still wants to be there. Plans on coming back once Hinkley pisses off later in his career.

If Port are going to apply pressure on Ladhams to improve as an athlete then it's well with his rights to seek direction and the ultimate support of a ruck coach to meet that expectation.
Being a Ruckman is such a specialist position with more 1v1 contests than any other position on the ground when you factor in Centre Square Bounces, Stoppage Ball Up's, Boundary Line Throw In's and to a lesser extent kicking to a contest which often target Ruckman.
To not have a Specialist Ruck coach is crazy in my opinion as Ruckman have a large influence on setting the tone for the midfield.
It’s hardly rocket science.
Just get f**** massive and beast your opponent. The other coaches can sort out the skills side. No need for someone to come in to the club and tell a player how to jump in to another player.

I know you are a positive guy but it's all getting a bit sunshine and lollipops. This move might be perfect for him. They do have a good culture there in Sydney, and a new start, with new mates, different coaches, all might serve to straightening him up.
I hope so, and wish him all the best. He has the talent to be a top AFL ruckman, as mentioned, he just needs to fix a few things.

He was trending upwards significantly in the last half of this year. His biggest flaw is his ruckwork & marking imo if Dean Cox fixes that in 5 minutes this will be a heavily bumped thread.
