Any of you chaps remember Peter Motley?
What a player,, what a guy....
Met him the other day at the SANFL watching his favourite team,,,,Sturt.
Think he might of won a brownlow or 2 personally.
All the best

I can assure all you Carlton fans out there, me included, that he is still very interested in the Blues results as much as he is with his beloved Double Blues of Sturt in the SANFL in which he is the No1 ticket holder.
His spirit and determination is unbelievable and such a nice guy deserves the 2 clubs that he chose to play for.
GO Ben Nelson.
All the best

In many peoples minds the most gifted of the bunch that landed at Carlton that year it was a tragedy.

Recently spoke at a Carlton dinner to a standing ovation.

Excatly Footy Mad, Braddles and Sticks were/are two of the greatest players we've ever had, yet Motley was always rated higher than those two. I have no doubt he wouldve won at least one brownlow. If only....

Dunno whether Motley was rated above Kernahan (from a Sth Australian perspective) when he moved over but he certainly had raw talent - bucketloads of it. It was a travesty that he wasn't able to fulfill his potential of being a superstar, well before his time.

Yes, I've seen him at Sturt games too, but never approached him. I've heard and read that he's accommodating when people do approach him though and very giving of his time.

All the best Pete!

I remember when the accident happened (may 1987 from memory). Mots had an average '86 season, but started to get it together in the late part of 86, and was looking settled in early 87.

Very sad.. was a real shame for someone in his prime to be injured in those circumstances

All the best to him

I bumped into Mots at Boost juice in Jetty rd. Glenelg about 8:30 am Sunday morning.
Such a shame to see the effect the accident has had on his life.
He is every bit the superstar down there still, all the locals stop & wave or call out to him, the girls at boost obviously know him well & joke around with him.
He was obviously dissapointed with the result against the old enemy - had a nice chat for a minute or so, shame I was still hungover.

well, at least it's a worthwhile bump

Peter Motley was a GUN.

I think he would of been everything Kernahan and Braddlesas were if not better, he had everything, speed, endurance, footy smarts etc but he also had the marking ability, I remember him just cruising around the HBF marking everything that came his way. (a bit like David Rhys-Jones in the way he moved)

A real tragedy, but so greatfull he has become the great person he is today.

Fabulous talent taken too soon from the game, not to mention his own enormous personal setback. It doesn't seem to have ever soured him on life or other peoples' destinies which underlines what a great, positive bloke he was as well.

Would have been a ten year, 250 gamer and the only thing stopping him from winning a brownlow would have been the other amazing talent he played alongside.

What an amazing show of loyalty, that this bloke only played a season for the blues yet shows more heart and desire for the navy blue than i have seen for a while.

What a champion bloke.

Was a tragedy.

From memory there was a couple of other Carlton players involved? Although not as seriously injured ?

Was Paul Meldrum one of them? Had a flying start to the season and polled 3 or 4 BOGs in the first 6 or 7 rounds. Didnt do much after the accident Brownlow wise and still come runner- up?

Working from memory though........anyone??

I think Paul Meldrum was following in the car behind, he was traumatised by what he saw and wasn't the same for the rest of the season.

I wish we could have seen what Peter would have become on the footy field, however, that video shows what a strong character he has remained off it and the deep love that he feels for the navy blues.
It was great to hear that the CFC has stood by Peter and Geof ever since.
Things like this are the reason that I follow Carlton.

I work at Glenelg and see Motley a fair bit down there. Hes a real character, everyone knows him down there and he knows most of the shop owners so will head down Jetty Road in and out of shops for a chat. Hes pretty sharp and quick-witted and the only real physical effects left from the accident are a limp and limited usage of one arm, and a slight slur when he talks. As has been said, hes extremely loyal and loves both his blues - Sturt and Carlton - and hasnt bought into the Crows/Port crap over here, just follows Carlton in the AFL. Im not old enough to remember his playing days but have heard the stories about how talented he was and how good he could've been. As sad as it is for him to have his career cut short like that its good to know he has physically and mentally recovered a long way since then and is clearly enjoying his life now.

Mots is still as much loved at Sturt, where he remains (as mentioned above) No 1 ticketholder and still gets up to the microphone every president's lunch and tells a joke.

Almost brings me to tears every time i think about the tragedy he suffered, and what would've been.

Mots was an absolute gun, and would've ended up with at least 2 premiership medallions and probably a B&F or two. Champion human being to boot.

that accident also cost Paul Meldrum a bronlow

what sort of shape is Motley in mentally?

Read the thread. Somewhere this page it mentions he's still sharp.
