Peter Siddle

Didn't he have a foot injury early last season before the shoulder?

Hmm, that does ring a bell for some reason. I'm not sure now.

This was always the concern with Siddle. The main reason he's played so few first class games is the number of injuries.

Given the amount of overs the bowlers have put down in test cricket over the last few months (9 tests in 11 weeks), I'm not surprised they are dropping like flies. When you are getting beaten you also tend to bowl even more overs.

Mitch was also having foot troubles during the Sydney test, but seems to be okay for the moment. Ponting has been giving him 30-40 overs an innings... asking for physical breakdowns.

Personally, I'm more excited at the prospect of seeing Ryan Harris playing than Siddle. There are a lot of bowlers either injured or being rested (Lee, Johnson, Clark, Siddle, Geeves, Watson), so this could well be the only chance Ryan Harris has for a while.

Knowing that, Harris will be working harder than anybody else in either team. And if he can perform well, it will give Australia another all-round option. Harris is more than capable of opening the bowling and actually swinging the ball, and batting at 7 or 8. And add to that the fact that he is one of the best fielders in Australia. If he gets the chance, he could be a very handy player for Australia.

Fair dinkum, do you lot actually READ the article.

Siddle has had a history of shoulder problems, this has absolutely nothing to do with current predicament.

It is a mild injury and he needs a 2 week break, nothing major. He is still young and no doubt his not used to bowling the type of overs his been bowling in the recent past especially in 3 back to back test matchs.

He will get fitter and more tolerant to the workload as time passes, and until that occurs his workload will have to be managed and preventative action taken to prevent injury in the form of periodic resting.

Credit to the Australian team management for making this decision.

lol. you sound like a CA spindoctor. When are you holding your press conference LtD?

It is very rare you will find a South Aussie praising a Victorian but I got to say watching Peter Siddle over the past few tests I really like what I see. Gets fired up isn't scared to get stuck in and seems like a pretty damn good bloke as well.

His bowling action and physique remind me a hell of a lot of Craig McDermott as well my favourite fast bowler when growing up so another plus point there!

massive fan. have been from the moment i saw him first play for victoria in shield cricket last season.

he's a real fast bowlers' fast bowler if you get what i mean. as a quickie myself i just love the sight of a guy steaming in, giving it everything, just toiling away on a placid deck (not that the wanderer's deck could be described as placid) without much help, hitting the deck as hard as he can and just busting his gut to get the breakthrough for his team. that described siddle perfectly.

if he can just work on getting the ball to move a bit in the air and his consistency then he will be one of the best bowlers in the world IMO. He already gets a good bit of movement off the deck. At 24, there is so much upside for him it's not funny.

I honestly see no reason why he can't take 250, 300 test wickets or more at an average under 25/26. Obviously things can fall apart and he is a bit injury prone unfortunately... But it's just a matter of him working on what he developed so far and improving.

This may also come as a suprise but i found out over the weekend that during their testing Siddle is aerobically the fittest guy in the Australian squad. Thought that honour would've gone to Johnson.

To think he's only played 18 first class matches (that's including his 4 tests). He'll only get better and better. Imagine when he starts to move the ball... he's going to be one very dangerous bowler.

This was the first time I was really impressed with him. Until then I wasn't a fan. I held back after Sydney because of the track. This Test though he maintained high pace thoughout and was extremely hostile putting the wind right up SA's batsman. A pleasure to watch...lol! We learnt alot about their batsman this Test, especially their dislike of short-pitched bowling. He found great lines and lengths in the 2nd innings (not so much in the 1st) and really seamed the ball both ways. His line and length can be a worry but when he gets it right, very dangerous. He revelled coming on first change contributing to, and reaping the rewards of, the stifling pressure applied by Johnson, Hilfenhaus and to a lesser extent, McDonald.

I was away for the Home Series, so this is really the first time I've had a good look at him.

While obviously not to the same level, but the way he went after Steyn reminded me a little of McGrath bouncing the Windies.

Siddle basically made a statement to Steyn, the best quick in the world, that sure, I may be young and inexperienced, but I'm here to win, and I'm not worried about anything you can throw at me. He really rattled Steyn, and didn't take a backward step all game.

Love seeing that - and it really sends a message to the rest of the Team as well.

Oh, and he also bowled pretty bloody well.

I expect him to have a few ups and downs due to his relative inexperience, but he could be a very good bowler for us for the next five years.

He is a gun, will bowl fast and hit the deck hard all day. He hasn't looked back since the first over of the Boxing day test, also he is pretty solid with the bat avg's 17 and has been involved in some handy partnerships.

Can;t wait to see him bowl in England with the duke ball.

Been a fan for a while, was absolutly stoked when he got picked too tour India.
Has everything you want in a fast bowler, he gives his all, attacks the batsmen, yet can still keep it very tidy when he gets into a rhythm and is not afraid to get in their face

Gee he reminds me of Flintoff at his best sometimes.

I've been on him since he tore NSW apart in the SS final. And he's Victorian :) .

Been a fan since his debut. He's a gun, a flat-track bully. Bowls fast, consistently too. I base my action on him, with the Brett Lee run-up

He might not be the greatest bowler ever.

But if fit, he will take alot of wickets and play alot of test for Australia.

Same here, I wasn't sure about him until then, it was an incredible performance against a NSW side made up predominantly of Aussie test players. To those who wrote him off after his first test against South Africa, let's thank the selectors they were more patient than you guys. Always had the talent, and now proving it on test level.

And wonderous experts criticise the Australian selectors. And Ponting. It was Ponting who put forward the case for Siddle. It was also Ponting who made the case for Symonds in the 2003 WC who went on to blitz. And they wonder why people laugh at their complete stupidity.
