I agree that he shouldn't be playing one day cricket. Would be good for him to play in the Sheffield Shield for Victoria and take a bag of wickets to get his confidence back. Plus we could go back to back.

What I find totally jaw dropping is our selection policies.

We played Siddle in all these meaningless ODI matches - and he is not a good ODI bowler anyway he is a Test bowler - and he comes back to Australia a shadow of the bowler we sent overseas. Injured so no time to get some form playing 4 day cricket either.

Now our Test series has almost finished I was thinking it would be a great opportunity for Siddle to go back and play 4 day cricket, he has not played a lot of FC cricket and it shows in his Test bowling. And I look at the 12 man ODI squad and Peter Siddle is in it.

He has slipped behind the Rug now and would be dropped if Hilf was fit. How is he going to improve his Test match bowling by playing ODI cricket?

Can someone please explain this to me? I do not see any logic in it whatsoever.....

There isn't any logic, they are idiots.

What I find even worse is that we played Hilfenhaus in that same ODI Series; when we already knew he had knee tendonitis - what the **** were they thinking?

He is a good bowler, and should be a good bowler for Australia long term. But at the moment, he's average at best - there is no shame in him being dropped back to the Domestic comp to get his mojo back.

I remember being at the G when Siddle was steaming in against the South Africans and bowling a devastating spell, and thinking he was a real find.

Now he just seems a bit of a nothing bowler. I'd rather give Watson the new ball to be honest. (Though opening bowling and batting is obviously not going to happen)

His pace seems to have slipped. I thought he bowled in the 140-145kmh range but so often he is in the 130-135kmh range, occasionally sending down an effort ball that peaks in the 140-145kmh range. For the ODI side, I'd rather try Lee (if fit), Bollinger, McKay and maybe Hauritz and Watson (with Johnson as backup) than Siddle or Hilfenhaus. Hilfenhaus isn't ODI class at the moment, whilst Siddle needs to get some form back in longer-term cricket.

This is the key. When he bowled that BRILLIANT spell against the Saffers here in 2008, he was going along at 150 clicks. He has struggled since the Ashes series to get it above 140 more than once in a blue moon. As a result he isn't getting that menacing nip, and he's relying on late swing coming along every so often to string some wickets together.

Have to admit the TC's topic sentence is pretty funny though. I've got visions now of the commentators announcing Siddle's introduction to the attack - "And into the attack now is Peter Siddle, bowling right arm poo."

I don't see any need at all for either Hilfy or Siddle to be playing ODI cricket. They are Test bowlers and our most promising young Test bowlers. They should be playing four day cricket as a priority (especially in Siddle's case because he has very little FC experience and it shows) not being belted around on flat tracks for weeks on end. I have no doubt the decline in Siddle's bowling is partially attributable to playing ODI cricket and Hilfy's knee is definetely caused by ODI cricket.

Use the ODI's as we have always done, to blood and look at young bowlers. We should be giving McKay a good run, have a look at a few of the other young promising quicks and see if they have what it takes. Bollinger, McKay, Hauritz, Watson, Hopes + young quick is what we should do.

Although we will need to play Johnson after his 3 match rest because on past history it will take him the whole of both ODI series to get into rhythm again.....to terrorise the Kiwis.

So you want Nepotism to be alive and well? And you'd prefer the guy averaging in the 50's over the guys average about 20? Hilfenhaus will come back in the side for him.

No way, Doug is the best new ball bowler we've had since McGrath. He uses the new ball better than anyone in Australia. Siddle has become a one trick pony with his "in your face" short bowling, and unless he adds some more tricks to his bow, his Test career is limited.

'The fast bowling rely a lot on rhythm and when the rhythm is going well it creates effortless pace' - Allan Donald. But there is so much more then just pace, if Siddle fully rely on pace then his career won't really go past 31, 32. Because he is really tall he should be trying to bowl at a good length to exploit the bounce, i think he tried to bang in the ball too much. If he can pitch the ball up he can get the natural swing going also so even if his pace drop to regular 135 km/h, he can still trouble the batsmen.

Furthermore, many has been calling for Hiffenhaus to come back but Bollinger is the left arm version of Hiffenhaus, there is no need for H to be back for now. The current team of Siddle, Bollinger, Johnson are the perfect strike bowlers for Aus because Siddle offer aggression and bounce, bollinger offers swing, Johnson offers the x-factor and batting plus reverse swing from Watson.

Vettori hardly bowls himself in NZ so it wouldn't be the worst idea leaving out Hauritz for games over there. Steven Smith in for North would also help.
