Petracca signs until the end of 2029

the risks of a long-term deal are definitely with the club rather than the player. If I was running a club, I wouldn't sign any player or coach beyond 3 or 4 years. look ahead 4 or 5 years. plenty can change beyond. but i don't run a club so its the demons prerogative. i certainly wouldn't want my club doing it

Due to Franklin's situation?

I see your point but he will most likely end up (injury permitting) our greatest since Flower and if wins a Flag since Barassi, it also sends a statement to other players.

Seeing these kinds of deals more often: Coniglio, Grundy, (Treloar?) etc. Reckon Kelly will end up signing for a similar length of time, but huge potential to go pear-shaped if Petracca cops a long-term injury. He's not signing for a million per year though.

Interesting times. Melbourne will challenge for a premiership in the coming years, and he's the most vital piece, so it makes sense.

Hopefully worth a premiership to this team and if they get a chance this year they better make the most of it. This team has struggled for years.

Surprised he took the offer so early. Surely you'd want.to up your price potentially with 3 year?

Can't begrudge him going for the security of such a long term deal though. Most players would jump at the opportunity

He hasn’t got a huge body of work plus has ACL history. Genius from him.

That's nuts I wouldn't sign any player on 7 years especially when they are 25 too much risk imo look what's happened with the Pies and Grundy's contract. 5 years imo would have been plenty would have take him to 30.

What if Trac has a poor year next season.

Maybe now that a great operator in Josh Mahoney has arrived at your club you will be able to sort out your list management.

Deals of that magnitude are just way too risky. Theoretically he absolutely deserves it if he continues to play the way he is right now and you'd be stoked as a Melbourne supported to have Petracca locked in for his career, but 7 years is a really long time, and you just have to look at the Franklin deal or the Grundy deal to know that things can change very quickly.

Sydney has been paying franklin a million a season and he's played 13 games since 2018. Grundy's form right now is nowhere near the million a year he's signed for and he's completely destroyed Collingwoods salary cap.

Could very well hurt them in the long run.

Don't think anyone's inferring it's a bad deal for Melbourne in any way shape or form. Petracca could've backed himself in for a shorter deal to get more dollars but your last line is probably in line with his thinking anyway. Too many players hold their club to ransom **cough, Grundy, Cognilio, Kelly, Ablett cough** to the detriment of team success.

Personally I like it.
Ablett?

Agree, I'd suggest that they are paying him 8 years and hoping for about 6 good ones, and the Dees have probably budgeted on paying for a player not on the field in his last couple of years to get him at he's peak.

I've only seen one exception to a team getting the better end of a long term contract, and that was Alister Lynch.
