Found this little critter in the backyard yesterday as I was mowing the lawn......

Yeah I thought it was a little snake at first

There was a good episode of the Dog Whisperer where he shows how to train dogs to keep their distance from snakes in the wild using an electronic collar and some caged rattlesnakes.

Our dogs have had no such training and they're constantly snooping in every nook and cranny. God only knows what would happen if there was a snake lurking in there. Hopefully, they'll keep their distance. One of them was very wary of a car wash sponge lying on the ground the other day.

Pfffft, only a ground lizard, Get heaps outside my back door, sometimes the little suckers sneak inside. Clyde just ignores them though he has developed a taste for Geckos. Bonnie didn't mind the odd lizard.:)

Did you read about the 3 year old up my way who found some snakes eggs in the yard, popped them in a plastic container, with lid on, put them in his wardrobe. Eggs hatched, mother screams, calls wild life person, more screaming, EASTERN BROWN SNAKES. 2nd most venomous in the world. Wild life guy takes snakes and RELEASES THEM. :D

That's been my worry Mr R. Get some harmless ones here but also get Death Adders, lethal swines. Look like an argyle sock and love hiding amongst vegetation and leaves. Sprung Bonnie one time nose to nose with a whip snake, sorted that out and taught the dogs "snake" meaning stop "sniffing" there.

The snake catchers take them away down here in Victoria too, Gabbie. I was told ''within 5kms of where we catch them.'' Many people have their own solution to the issue.;)

What may be common for you Gabbie is rare for us in the inner suburbs of Melbourne to see lizards or snakes in the back yard :p

Are you close to a waterway, bushland Dan?

I have my own solution as well especially I it's a Death Adder, called The Shovel. You're only wrong if you get caught.

I've been away from Melbourne for toooooooo long. :D

Heard stories of snakes being located in yards in what used to be outer suburbs but now considered medium outer in Melbourne. HATE snakes. Had one in the front yard one morning and called my neighbour to "fetch" it while me and the dogs watched him pick it up with his bare hands from behind our screen door. He shook his head at me "it's only a tree snake". LOL :D:eek:

I've been hanging out to see a Kookaburra (we have heaps here) with one in it's beak and bash it against a rock or tree trunk.

Hope you didn't kill the little lizard Dan, they love bugs.

By the way, hope you guys are in a cool place, big hot ones in Melbourne.
Nah just wanted to put him in a jar for a photo....we let him back in the garden afterwards.

I've always been of the belief that it's best to "live and let live". Don't like snakes, but have always left them alone/walked away...........................but we had a small snake on our back deck a few years ago and adrenalin and the need to protect family and pets soon took over and said snake was dispatched with a shovel. Archie was on the deck at the time, but didn't see it. On reflection he had been acting a little strangley for a day or so sniffing through the gaps in the deck. It is legal in Tasmania to kill a snake that is threatening people or domestic animals. It's the only snake we've seen here in 11 years, but it was an unusually dry hot summer (like this one apparently:eek:).

We do get a lot of the little lizards here though (semi rural/suburban location).

I have actually seen a kookaburra with a snake in its beak, low flying over my backyard when we lived in the country.....we had quite a bit of open land behind us, and he must have swooped and got it from there...however, I didn't see the end result of that hunting expedition...he had a good grip on it, it wasn't going anywhere other than where the kooka wanted it to go.

p.s....hope all S.A and Vic pets are getting through this heat o.k....43 up in my old country town today, family o.k so far.

oh, and as we say in the country, the only good snake is a dead one!;):D

Snake catcher came and took a little tiger snake away from our place a few years ago. The family dog had bailed it up in a corner until we took the dog inside out of harms way.

He said snakes like to stay under cover when they move from a to b, e.g. close to walls, under trees, because of predators, especially birds.

I asked if there would be a family of snakes in our backyard - he said ''no'' - and would it come back and he said ''it's not a homing pigeon.''

By the way, nice horse in your avatar, MacMum. Is it one of your pets?:)

I wish!:D...he is Apache Cat, one of my all time favorite racehorses...he is living with other top race horses at Living Legends farm for retired greats...I was lucky enough to have my photo taken with him when we visited the farm about 12mnths ago..I've had it blown up and it takes pride of place in the lounge.

Living Legends is a lovely place to visit, so tranquil with rolling hills, old historic homestead and kangaroos (the real kind;)) everywhere...and next door, sort of, is Tullamarine airport, so can watch the planes coming and going..

..really loved the place and would recommend it to all...it only costs a gold coin donation and the little kids would love it...even if not into horse racing.

Was an unbearable night, didn't get much sleep and we had the doors open all night.....something we rarely do.

..unfortunately, more of it to come..

That's it! We're going to Living Legends. Thanks, MacMum for the recommendation. I looked at the photo and thought the baldy face was blinkers and a white blaze on the nose.

My pleasure, hope you enjoy it as much as we did...it was so peaceful, we looked at the horses then roamed all over the place...very few people so very enjoyable..

..you will find a lot of old Melbourne Cup winners out there as well..e.g...Doremious, Might and Power, Brew etc.
