60. Gavin Grose (Southport / Queensland)

Queensland is the new frontier. Their junior programs are going from strength to strength. We know we can not lot the good QLD junior fall through to the rookie list and let the Lions snap them up.

Gavin Grose has a monster silo-clearing left peg. Is a good size and looks like he will bulk up nicely. Not as athletic as some but a 'safe' sort of choice as a key defender. Have to teach him to play one on one.

Adding Grose and Schofield is a sort of self-contained insurance policy. It is unliklely that both will make the grade having been taken so late in the piece, but Thursfield, McGuane, Schofield and Grose should have a little ding-dong battle over the next 2 seasons and give us good candidates for the 2 key defensive spots and free us up to focus on rucks and forwards next year.

QLD and Tassie!

Pick 61 - Ben Ross

Best available here. Would have liked one of Schofield or Grose to be available but with them gone, Ross the most obvious option. Very quick (2.94), hard, good in the air (for his size) and somewhat underrated around here I feel. Although he is an unattractive size, he has the ability and at 61, you dont have alot to chose from. Hard and nuggety in the Chapman mould.

great pick, was my next choice. Definately underated on here IMO.

Weaver,
Probably not a big issue but I'm don't think Grose plays for Southport, pretty sure he plays for brissie team maybe mt gravatt.

he does play for Mt Gravatt - could kick it to Southport with out much trouble. That left foot is enormous!

Gilly - where are you?

I'll let him know its his pick. I think he's going o/s tomorrow, so he might wanna get his pick in tonight.

Seen a lot of him have you macca ?
ive seen and played with paul stewart starting with under 9s just over 10 years ago always been a gun, but this year really started dominating by switching from henley fc to west torrens. perfect body for a footballer, great mark and kick, and fairly fit. pulls some of the hottest women aswell not that is important.
has so much upside its not funny dont know if he will be top 50 though, cant do physical activity for i think another 2 months cause of a shoulder reco, but is a strong chance to go to either collingwood, geelong, west coast or port/crows

Melbourne selection #62 - Lindsay Thomas - Small midfielder (Port Adelaide, SA), 178cm, 77kg

Again my strategy has changed on the fly. Was looking to go tall here again but I don't rate any of the talls left above Thomas. Great pick up at #62. Highly skilled, quick without being express, but a great ability to sell the dummy and side-step his defender and generally a good finisher in front of goal, smart and unselfish. Also very good above his head for his size and his leap can be explosive for a guy of 178cm, recall him taking a great pack mark over a couple of defenders and Shane Edwards in the Vic country game .Will start in a FP or HFF and in time may work his way into the midfield rotationn or may even end up playing an Andrew McLeod role across half back, but it is up forward where he will be most dangerous. Will allow Davey to spend more time further up the ground.

Collingwood - #63 - Nathan Batsanis (180 / 81)

Classic centremen. Little surprised he lasted this long.

Worked his way into the Metro side this year and had a reasonable Championships. Went back to TAC and kept on getting better and ultimately won his sides B&F. Went on to be one of the best players in the finals series culminating in a BOG display at the GF. Penetrating kick with sure hands and an ability to find the big sticks.

With Hislop and Proud I feel we have 3 outstanding midfield talents to work with.

Great pickup this late. (Kelly was officially BOG in the GF, but I personally thought Batsanis was better)

Wouldn't surprise me to see a few Qld boys wind up at Tigerland with McRae joining you guys.
