Phantom Draft 2009 (Version 2)

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

Yeah, I know Talia's injury probably won't hinder his selection too much but there's always a chance. Also, regarding Hawthorn's selection, I thought they would have needed another midfielder as theirs doesn't seem to be working out too well at the moment and Cunnington is a gun (Might go earlier too). I rate Panos highly, while he isn't capable of doing much other than marking and kicking some good goals, what needs to be taken into consideration is that a lot of teams want exactaly what he does. Just look at Brendan Fevola and how he turned out.

The player I reckon Melbourne will get with their second round would have to be Carlisle or maybe Griffiths, considering I had them take 2 midfielders with their first 2 picks. Melbourne seem to need a Key Forward to top off their development and while Carlisle isn't the best KP around, he and Watts will be tearing opposition up if they're being fed by the likes of Trengove, Grimes, Davey etc.

Yeh definately a possibility with Talia and I agree Cunnington could go as high as 3 imo - although I have him at going to Port.

I agree on Carlisle too. Hes probably not as quite as good as Panos, Bucher or Griffiths yet but I actually think there is a lot to work with. I really like the way he moves and with a few years in an AFL system I think he could be a very good player. If he tests well at draft camp I will move him up my order.

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

Ok, I've given my Phantom Draft a big update before draft camp. Things definitely have changed quite a bit. Soon, I'll have a full list (not just first round)

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

No Gary Rohan in the re-do any reason why?

Completely forgot to put him in. I just re-edited it for now. I'll be re-editting it again too, Cunnington and Stevens seem a bit late now.

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

Hahahaha. Cracks me up when people think Brisbane will select a ruckman. How many times do us Brissy fans on bigfooty have to say we are looking for midfielders! We don't need ruckman! Will take Cunnington, Stevens or Jetta which ever one is there!

So? It's all an opinion and I think Brisbane need ruckmen from what I've seen.

Why don't you comment on the reason behind his selection, which I think is a valid one. With Bradshaw getting on, the selection of Vardy would free up Clarke who would be a great replacement up forward.

Leunberger has had trouble with injury and is yet to prove himself (even though there is no doubt he will make the grade if he gets his body right) but Vardy gives you another option in the ruck and up forward and releases Clarke from ruck duties. In turn Clarke could play permantly up forward. Henderson may be seen as a replacement but is unproven, probably has shown enough to suggest that he will be at worst a servicable player at AFL level.

However, I agree that you need another midfielder with the retirements of Power and Black over the next few years someone like Stevens could be a good inclusion. Even though I agree with your premise, I do see why GrandBlue decided to make that selection.

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

The fact that we have ready made replacements for Bradshaw when he retires in couple of years (Henderson and Cornelius) and the fact that we will most probaably have Jamie Charman as our QAFL ruckmen. Not to mention Bart McCullogh, who i rate fairly highly. We won't be drafting a KPP or ruckmen in this years draft. Stevens and Jetta would be a more realistic selection for Brisbane.

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

From the way I see it, Brisbane already have a developing midfield in the likes of Sheldon, Sherman, Rich, Austin, Selwood, Polkinghorne and to an extent, Adcock, Brennan and Redden. I wasn't impressed by Hendersen either. Regardless, the huge bonus in picking up Vardy is that Mitch Clark can be freed up to roam around the ground and I don't just mean forward, I think he could potentially be one of the best tall utility type players in the league.

The players that are underlined are the only players that played in the midfield this year and are the only players i see that will move into the midfield. Adcocks move into the midfiled last year was unsuccessful and this year got back some of his 2007 form. Highly unlikely that he would back into the midfield. I would hardly call Selwood a developing player and he won't be part of our midfield in the future. If you saw the WB vs Brisbane game you would have realised we need another inside midfield to help Black and Rich (No Black= No clearances). Theres no doubt Brennan being brought back into the midfield fulltime will help but we lack another inside midifled.

Hopefully we are going to trial that gameplan next year. But you do realise that we've got Charman. We don't need Vardy to free Clark so its not really a bonus.

There is no possible explanantion in drafting Vardy or any other ruckmen in the draft, it just won't happen.

It would be more likely that we would draft Koby Stevens, Lewis Jetta or Gysberts.

I know its just a phantom draft. But it's really annoying when people have us drafting a ruckmen when really there is a 0.198% (probably less) chance were actually going to draft a ruckmen this year. You got some valid points and your phantom looks good (Up until Brisbane picks) but its almost like saying that WB will draft another medium sized forward.

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

I Didn't say you would choose the most marketable player I said your club would put a high value on marketability just like they did when they were looking for a coach.

And I do believe you will take the best midfieder but it's no secret that your club is desperate for money and i was simply justifying the selection of Rohan to Nth Melbourne. He will be a could player you know?

Not as desperate as the great ill informed (and semi literate in your case) would seem to think.

Anyway, getting drafting advice from RICHMOND fans. Jeez.

I wasn't giving advice I was simply justifying why SOMEONE ELSE put Rohan to North at your first pick.
I did not say marketability would be a deciding factor but I said your club would put a higher value on marketability than other clubs because lets face it your club is in desperate times. Even with your recent success being greater than Richmond's you still can't manage to get over 20k to a game V Melbourne. Repeated and desperate attempts to have home games at Subiaco so you can try and cash in on loyal WC and Freo fans because your own fans won't show up themselves. Media commentators don't know what your players look like let alone what their names are such is the common disinterest in the Kangaroos.

For what it's worth I think you will pick the best available mid with your first rounder as I have said previously. Just because I am a Richmond supporter doesn't mean I cannot have an opinion on drafting. It's not as if I am responsible for who my club has picked over the past few years let alone condone it. How's Tarrant? Wells? Hansen? they were all great selections weren't they? Every club has made mistakes. The only difference being that no one is interested or gives a shit about your club.

Re-edited the order again.

Calm down, as I previously stated, it's only an opinion and I stand by it. I don't think Charman's any good at all, too inconsistant in my book and lacks potential, especially after sustaining a big injury this year. McCulloch or whatever his name is has too many question marks over his head. Along with having not played any career games, he was taken as a 5th/6th round pick so I doubt he'll be in Brisbane's 22 any time soon, especially after getting injured. Thus I think Vardy would suit Brisbane's lineup, not only to play as the second ruck, but to free up Clark in the forward line and around the ground. Sure, disagree all you want but I think it's a logical choice. Not to mention, Brisbane do have a second round pick.

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

I'd like Koby Stevens at the Crows.
But not in a time share with Essendon.

Solid draft but i reckon sydney will take rohan leaving lucas to stay in W.A and go to the eagles.

Yep wouldnt mind Tapscott running around in red and black... remains to be seen if Ess will keep their pick 10... i hope they do.

Bulldogs would be over the moon to snare Talia but I doubt he'd slip to us.

I must admit, I have him slipping a bit but if Hawthorn and Collingwood trade their first rounders for Burgoyne and Jolly respectivley, the Dogs would then have a good chance.

What are your thoughts on Jack Weston ?
not a chance for the draft?? Has shown some talent

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

martin and bastinac would be very welcome additions to our midfield. would allow deledio to go foward more often, and would improve our skills significantly

Re: My Phantom draft (First round)

Martin won't go top 5, there is too much class up the top end- Who out of Scull, Butcher, Trengrove, Morabito, and Lucas will he push out? I have him in the 6-15 area, and he could go absolutely anywhere inside that pic range.

Think you will be proven wrong on this one.
