I will be completing Essendon's picks in this years Phantom draft. I welcome all contributions and suggestions and yes criticism as well! There are several people on our board who obviously follow junior footy pretty closely and I particularly welcome their input. There is currently a trial draft happening where each side will have 6 picks. I have currently selected Brad Ebert with Pick 4 and Steven Gaertner with pick 20.
With Ebert I thought he was the classiest midfielder available who could win his own ball and possessed A1 disposal. I strongly considered Myer, Masten and palmer.
With pick 2 I selected Steven Gaertner who is an extremely quick and athletic 196cm key position player. the major flaw in his game is he is a poor kick. I considered drafting another athletic midfielder (Who i hope will be available with my third round selection) or a ruckman. (Dawson Simpson or Tom bellchambers)
Look forward to everyones input.

Great move with Ebert:thumbsu:

You don't have to look far to find me singing his praises.

Gaertner's certainly an exciting prospect but will take a long time and it's possible that we're not in a position to wait. Then again, the only guy I would've considered ahead of him for that pick would've been Levi Greenwood. Quite possibly would've gone for Gaertner though.

For pick 3, I suggest you go with Darcy Daniher. He's got an Essendon background and I think shapes as a good key defensive prospect that could come on sooner rather than later.

If you're thinking about a project ruckmen, go with Dawson Simpson. A 207cm giant that seems to be improving by the second.

Of the player's not selected at the moment, Patrick McGinnity would also be high on my priorities.

i've seen Gaertner a few times and there is no way he is worth a high 2nd round draft pick

It doesn't matter how much anyone has seen of him and what he's done so far, that's not the reason he's worth a high pick.

Gaertner is an absolutely amazing athlete, that's why he's up there. 196cm tall, really quick, great endurance and a huge leap. He's got the perfect footballer's body.

Given that he's still relatively new to the game, his footy brain isn't as developed as others and that's why he's looked pretty ordinary at times. The hope is that that will develop and he'll be able to use his incredible physical abilities to good use.

If he does develop, he could well be one of the best players in the game or even the best player in the game. It's a risk that I'm not sure Essendon is in a position to take, but it could pay massive dividends.

So we're going to use our 2nd pick on a guy that is an amazing athlete but can't play footy? No thanks mate. 196cm, really quick, great endurance, huge leap...$hit kick and poor footy brain - Smacks of Bradley Mk II but at least Bradley had a good footy brain but was played out of position.

I'd much rather use our 2nd pick on a genuine footballer rather than an athlete that can be worked on.

Given the state of this draft, it might be worth it.

Chances are that if we got a second round pick as high as 15, which is unlikely to begin with, we'll end up with a pretty average footballer. A guy that quite possibly would've been a 40/50 pick last year. THta's how marked the difference in this draft is from last year part from a few good talents at the top.

Of the guys that were yet to be taken in that phantom draft, only one looks a good player to me and that's Levi Greenwood. Aside from him, I think it will be pretty hit and miss with who will make it and who won't from then on.

Gaertner at least could be a massive hit. Others could be decent footballers, Gaertner could a genuine star. Others could do very little and the same applies to Gaertner.

Gaertner's massive upside would quite possibly be temptation enough for me to pick him. In saying that, I'd have great difficulty in passing up over Greenwood. I think Levi could be the future rock of a backline.

Also, Gaertner's 'lack' of kicking ability is overrated in my opinion. He isn't nearly as bad as what others have said.

Now that i agree with. I think his kicking has been reasonably good.

I dont think i would have a problem with taking him second round. The kid can play. He isnt a Mark Bolton at all , he has some football skills to go with his athleticism. Gaertners biggest problem is constatncy. Just when he looks like he will take a game apart he fades out of the game just as quick. If he can start to stretch his game out a bit more over 4 quarters he will be a pretty handy player. He can play defecne as well which is good.

Do you know how new to the game he is? I thought he'd been playing for a while, but not 100% on that.

What about young Rioli ? They tell me he has the goods AND is a midfielder.

1.Masten/Rioli/Palmer 2.Collier/Ruckman?/Backman? 3.Daniher/Ruck/Backman. No more mids unless top 5 or 6.

I know Gaertener and play for his local based club he has been playing footy for a while I am pretty sure since he was around 10 or 11 at least, but i could be wrong.

He played a game with our seniors at Edi Asp in the penishula league when Stingrays didn't have a game and was in our top 2-3 players on the ground. It was 2nd vs 3rd and is a good standard of footy. Shows he can play against men. He is also bottom age and the games I have seen him play and played with him he has shown some pretty good kicking skills especaily from set shots.

He needs some time in the gym and really could be a star in 3 or 4 years.

Just a question to you guys do you think been a bottom age player is significant, I feel it really is one year at that age is a bigger difference to some players then people think, picking bottom age players might be the way to go just because at this point in time they are not as good as some other top ages doesn't mean they won't turn out twice as good a player?

Kruezer didn't get picked up as a bottom aged player last year i think, and now he is likely going to go number 1.

He wasnt eligible last season. The best example would be Tom Collier who could have been picked up but was passed up on

Oh ok, I saw him in a phantom draft at thedrafter.net- thought there must be something amiss there. Interestingly enough they had us picking up Collier at the pick we got Reimers.

If only we decided to have another pick in the super draft we could have taken a punt on someone like Collier.

Makes my very angry to think we held on to the likes of Bolts and Heff when we could have taken a punt.
