. Can one team really supprt three players of that size?

Perhaps your memory needs to be refreshed. Check the Brisbane lions side 2000-2004. Michael, Brown, Lynch, Keating, Charman, Bradshaw, Leppitsch ... shall I go on. 100kg or close to it!

ALOT has changed since then. These days you can afford to have one monster forward, one monster defender and if he quick and skillful enough one monster ruckman. The rest are midfielders.

Myth, perpetuated by the unsuccessful. Running teams like the Bulldogs get smashed in the finals. Why do you think Eade said we need bulk. Need to build up for next year. Lack of talls and big bodies is their achilles heal.

Checkout last year's premiers Sydney.
Hall, Goods, Doyle, LRT, Joly all 100 or close to it. Even Sydney's smalls are athletic, big bodied, built for endurance and hard knocks.

Check the list of Adelaide, The Eagles, even the Dockers have bulked up.

Quick, big bodied athletes with skills everyone is looking for. Even the smalls have to have bulk.

Yes, that's true. Since then, though, we've had rule changes that seem to tilt the balance in favour of runners. The way football is heading seems, to me, to be toward possession football and, as a result, lots of uncontested marks and possessions. This would seem to make power forwards, and therefore big-bodied defenders who stand them, less necessary. (By that, I don't mean you would have none in your 22, but simply that you would have fewer than once was the case.)

Also, two of the players you list are ruckmen. I didn't make it clear in my initial post, but I was referring to KPPs. I assume that any side with flag aspirations is gonna have two ruckmen in the 200cm+ 100kg+ bracket.

As a point of comparison, look at the last two premiers in Port and Sydney. Sydney only has the one big-bodied forward in Hall. And unless you count LRT, they don't have a single defender I'd classify as 'big-bodied'. Similarly, Port got by with the one Power forward in Tredrea, and from memory (Port supporters will correct me if I'm wrong) only Wakelin is what I'd describe as a really big KPD.

Sydney are in the running again this year with a similar structure. None of the Adelaide forwards -- Welsh, McGregor, Hentschell -- are monsters. WCE have Lynch and Hansen who are genuinely big-bodied, but then if WCE win a flag it'll probably be in spite of their forwardline not because of it. Over at Freo they've got Pav, but Murphy isn't huge... Anyway, you get the gist.

I dunno. You may be right. But prima facie there is more than enough evidence to think very carefully before loading up on the big-bodied forwards or the defenders who mark them.

Guys, can you take this outside to the car park? :p

C'mon, it's an interesting discussion and has direct relevance to this thread. People can always scroll past the posts if they're not interested.

I have only been a member of this site for the past few months, just wondering if once the trading week is over and the teams selections are set in stone will you be running this again?

This has been a great read so far, am really interested in the players that are going to be drafted and increasing my knowledge about them.

EDIT - Thanks Gilly, don't want to add many posts in this thread - leave that to the pro's.

That is the plan bobby.

Only one monster forward and only one monster defender?

How about two monster forwards (Gherig/Riewoldt or Brown/Bradshaw) and two monster defenders (Hudgton/Maguire or Leppa/Michael).

Teams need 4-6 very skilled tall players to win premierships.

47. Fremantle (Wizard9) -------------------------- Dean Kelly

Excellent pickup mate :thumbsu:

West Coast need a crumbing forward, as the only natural crumber on our list is Sampi. Given we are close to a premiership, we should be looking at players who could make an impact in their first year.

West Coast – Alwyn Davey

Has amazing pace, excellent skills, exceptional work ethic, great tackler, and has a great goal sense. He’s forwardline pressure is excellent, although he is also capable of playing midfield. Is very agile and deceptively strong which makes him hard to tackle. He’s the sort of player that for every goal he kicks, he’ll create another one for a team-mate. He probably won’t go this high come draft day, but he will be a steal for whichever club picks him up, and I would be ecstatic if West Coast ended up with him, he’s exactly what we are looking for.

Give us a few minutes for Sydney's pick (I initially had Kelly)

I was tossing a coin over Davey and Kelly. Went for Kelly as we already have the Wizz and Medhurst.

#44 - Collingwood - Mitchell Brown - 193 - 92 (Nth Ballarat Rebels)

Again very hard choice because there is another player I would have liked to take but I genuinely think this bloke was going top 30 and is now the best player still in the pool.

For those that do not know him he is from Nth Ballarat Rebels and I think is slightly bigger than his brother. Like Nathan can play a number of positions up and down the spine. Very physical and strong with hands and feet, great mark and a good kick. I think he has good awareness and could be a a real good CHF or CHB. At conclusion of champs I thought he was better than his brother but for the final game - in fact Kev Sheehan indicated he was unlucky not to be selected in the AA. Nice size and will develop well but not yet sure of best spot.

With Trav, Anthony and the two Brown boys I feel confident we have a very talented list of big blokes to take us fwd.

Interested in your comments....

Macca,think tall for Sydney,key defender.

ok then.

Sydney - Tom Collier

This kid has a lot of potential, could become a Joel Bowden type CHB, but ATM he looks more like a flanker who's tall enough to play KP. Is pretty quick and agile for someone of his size and his skills are very good. He's not all that accountable for a defender, but that can be taught. Also has a very good leap. Definately a bit of a project player and would be a year or two off AFL, but if he develops he will be a steal for a pick in the 40's.

Can someone tell me if he is Heath Blacks half brother? I'm sure I heard this somewhere.

I think that is correct HBF.
