Does seem to be more substance with Walsh. Has underlying principles. Sando preached Geelong but I think he looked at what the team they built did rather than had intimate understanding of how they created it.
Certainly a lot more "its my way, or the highway" to Walsh than there was Sando, at least it seems that way at the moment, the proof will come in 6 months to 2 years time.

Sando was exactly what the group needed in 2012, unfortunately once Craigy's fitness bases and inherently drilled structures faded with Sando's laxed standards, so did the ability to perform on a consistent basis. For the most part the fitness levels were okay, the hardness at the ball was good, but beyond this we didn't play like an AFL team, instead relying on individual brilliance and the ability to win the bulk of the centre clearances thanks to Danger, Thommo and Sloane.

+ loss of Bailey who covered many of Sando's weaknesses, including player communication & match day strategy.

I am not saying Sando was good or bad, but people seem to pull a lot of facts out of thin air now that he's gone.
He was good at some things, poor at others. People often forget how bad we we're in 2010/11 and I felt he improved us initially. Even when things wen't sour in those last two years, we we're still quite close to the other sides on the scorecard in many games. I don't remember losing to Melbourne by 90 something points under Sando.

Ultimately though we played dumb football under Sanderson. I don't blame the administration for looking for someone who will place greater emphasis on structure.

Im still struggling to identify Sando's specific coaching qualities, IMO he was completely lost at sea

He seemed to bring enjoyment back into the game, letting the players do their own thing a little more than Craig which was a good reason for us having such a strong 2012 after being pathetic the season before.

Now whilst some of Sando's match day moves/game plans gave me the shits, the way he's been made out on here you'd think he'd gotten away with murder being allowed to coach this side for 3 years.

Yeah Sando wasn't all that bad....just didn't have the full spectrum.

Imo winning brings enjoyment and in 2012 everything went right for Sando including draw, injuries and luck in winning the close games

Imo the spike in 2012 was more about a freshness and response and less about goid coaching and players are no fools they quickly worked out once Bails passed that Sando was completely out of his depth as a Senior Coach.....

People blame his inability to have us winning close games in the past two years due to poor coaching but then the ones he did manage in 2012 are due to 'luck'?

2013 you could say everything went wrong for Sando, he had an admin that make massive mistakes that cost him a star of the side - a player that hurt the team structurally big time along with the draft picks we lost. Bailey was suspended, Tex did his acl and it doesn't take much to understand why that was such a shit year.

2014 was a disappointing year that cost him in the end (and I'm glad we made the proactive move).

I just think it's funny how anything good we did under Sando is either forgotten or due to 'luck' and only the bad is constantly brought up with tales being made up each week of his wrong-doings (the ones which we never heard when he was the coach).

I think you'll find the good in 2012 had a huge Bailey attachment to it.

Whilst I might agree, at the end of the day, the man in charge gets all the good with the bad. I just think it's weak for us to put all our problems over the past few years on Sando alone.

Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if we had picked Hinckley and doggies had picked Sanderson. How the two teams would have gone for the last three years. It's too complex to know what is the result purely of head coach competence. Sanderson was too young to boss the club admin around, and not a deep thinker like Walsh. He took too much crap from the club and should have made strong demands in 2013 re coaching staff and walked if not met promptly.

I agree. He wasn't completely to blame for all the issues, on field and off field.

We we're close to the best contested ball side in the competition in 2012. This was one of his major focusses and I think he should get some credit for improving us in this area, especially after the previous two years under Craig.

As we know though, CB is just one part of footy. Sando was one dimensional and didn't seem to have a plan aside from winning CB. The areas he didn't focus enough on we're plain for all to see. It seemed to be a constant state of one step forward, two steps back.

I blame his inability to get the best out of a talented group, poor game plan, poor skills and poor selections and game day coaching

Contested ball is one element of many that you need to be goid at to be successful however Sando thought that this was the absolute silver bullet

I think you will find that Walsh will focus on contested ball plus total team defence, plus ball movement, plus running patterns and skill level etc etc

That's not true, Bickley got plenty of criticism thrown his way and unsurprisingly he's not there anymore. I also won't be surprised if Clarke is replaced by Lade at the end of the year either.
