I don't think our fixture was the main factor; Craigy left a team that was super fit and ultra disciplined, when Sando came in and backed things off a bit, they thrived - unfortunately, he backed off too much, and our discipline disappeared and out fitness went to shit.
Agreed re the fixture, was just an easy excuse for the Victorians to explain our dominance. Since GWS entered the comp there's been 5 double up games a season, we had Port, GWS, GC, Cats and Dockers.

It was on the easier side no doubt, but at best it gave us 1-2 more easily winnable than some of our top 8 competition. Plus our results against other top 8 sides throughout the season were as good as any other club. We won 17 games that season, you don't do that because of a "soft" draw.

If you replaced the double ups against GC and GWS with Melbourne and the Bulldogs, we would have had the same result. People were just getting all worked up on playing the expansion sides twice.

Cornes had lost the players (allegedly), no defensive focus, not fit enough. The players ran the show. Lost close games, mentally weak?

Shaw was the old school, hard task master. He'd sort them out with his no bullshit approach. Everyone thought he'd toughen em up. Good tactician for the suburban war fare of Melb footy.

Cornes = soft
Shaw = hard bastard with a bit of mongrel

And I think walsh will do alright, but it will take more than just flogging them and telling em whose boss. Which is what everyone seems to be lauding him for
Fair enough.

I wonder if the players' mindsets are different this time, though.

Yeah there's much more to it.

“From my understanding, he’s softened a bit since his experience in Peru, but there will be some non-negotiables in his coaching and work ethic will be the foundation.

“He’ll want strong characters around him, who make the club and football their priority.

“He’s very disciplined and with him as a coach, you certainly knew where you stood.’’

The thing that stands out about Walsh is his ability to instil confidence. Wakelin put it well.

“He gave you a huge amount of confidence in the tactics going into the game, in the specifics and how it was going to work.’’

That sounds exactly what we need. And it's not fluff, coming from a PA player who seemed to know him well.

Authentic footy club. Those words should resonate not just with the media (no spin) but most importantly with the whole Adelaide Football Club. Of course Walsh's perspective is coloured by his PA stretch but make no mistake his words speak a truth about where the AFC have soft bellied to. I'm sure the players have faced it in the last couple of months, as will the Board, the employees and all supporters. Things will happen and change with a sharper more 'man' edge. So bear in mind that being 'an authentic footy club' may make for a somewhat 'bumpy ride'.

You are over-rating Shaw calling him a good tactition.

Cornes had a better clue about tactics than Shaw...Imo Walsh will too.

I get the toughening up comparison though.

Walsh's strength is his game day tactics, that's what he is known for and that's the main reason he got the job.

I would say that the fact that Walsh sat down with all the players and Darren Glass and let them all voice their opinions would be a good sign for those worrying Walsh is going down a Neeld path.

Cornes should never of hired McGuinness, that guy is a rat. have a look at what blight asked of him, it was completely reasonable. McGuinness then was the one that helped spread the shit about Blight sacking McDermot and Jarman.

This defensive thing? LOL. there was no defense in the 80's and mid 90's. look at 1993, umpired out of a gf. Modra kicked 119 in the regular season, didn't win the Coleman.

3 players kicked over 120 goals
3 in the 70's
6 in the 60's
4 in the 50's

20 round season.

Look at Cornes record as state coach, unrivaled.

We never played a better brand of footy. He's the guy that gave Modra and Ricciutto a go. Playing Riccitto in the back pocket on tony hall in the 1993 elimination final was a master stroke. Hawthorn didn't like that. Hawthorn thought they were tough. Studley had the weed set the scene lining up fud at the first bounce, ala Yates on Brereton 89. Epic coaching that day we were suppose to get flogged. Have a look at hawthorn line up that day.

No wonder Chad hates us so much for what we did to his dad over that little rat. We seriously stabbed Studley in the back.

Agree with all but the last bit. many players have spoke how shaw would plan during the week for the opposition, then turn up on game day with a completely different one.
