A lot of people jumping to conclusions about what sort of coach PW will be. I'm glad Sando got the chop and there are a number of things about Phil that seem promising - not least his rep for tactical know-how - but Sando was a breath of fresh air after Neil, too. This is why coaches stop getting through to players. After a while, you hear them saying the same things over and over, you start to pick holes in their standard responses, see where their blind spots are. I we get sick of hearing that stuff, imagine how the players feel!

I like that everyone's feeling hopeful. I am too. But I'm not quite ready to appoint Phil the messiah.

Wasn't it JJ that squibbed a few contests in one of the last games? I'm not sure he's as tough as some of you are suggesting.
I've said it before on this board - JJ is fine when the contest is on his terms. It's when he has to impose himself in a disadvantaged position that he drops his head and his competitiveness. He needs to accept body contact and stay in contests longer. Those saying he's tough enough fall for his flat track bully efforts.

Jenkins doesn't have natural footy smarts. He's athletic with some clever skills but can't do much beyond the ball hitting him front on, or feeling the ball at ground level. He will improve though.

Some interesting posts in the Sanderson appointment thread from September, 2011.

The debate surrounded an article that Tredrea wrote questioning whether Sanderson had it in him to make the tough calls that were required at the club at the time.

Tredrea hasn't been wrong about much at the Crows in recent years, has he?

Memo, Phil Walsh. Give Warren a call.

Mark Robinson :)rolleyes:) on AFL 360 didn't have many positives to say about Sando and his interviews. Basically said he was too positive, talked about premierships, talked the list up so much that it'll come back to hurt him. Catch a replay if you can. Of course he then went on to praise McCartney and Neeld.
Tredrea has a crack today. States sando missed out on the port job. I didnt think he went for it
Before we actually nail Warren, he has asked a very valid and salient question, and it's a question several of us have asked over the last few weeks.

That question is - will the club be capable of making tough decisions on playing and coaching personnel? Is the club secretly thinking an added bonus of Sanderson's appointment is the fact that he won't make these decisions on his support staff?

Would any of you be happy with absolutely no changes in the footy department ie fitness and assistant coaches?

No, I didn't think so.......
take your witch hunting outfit off and have a rest.

how about we give Sanderson some time to get moving before we all jump up and down over some speculative comments made by a man with a clear bias against Sanderson and the Crows.

This is what I want to see him do in packs. He's capable, he just needs to believe in himself.
Got watch his efforts in the last minute of the North Melbourne win in indigenous round of 2013. Match winning effort in a pack on the wing.
Toughness is not the issue.

If we wanted a public speaker

Blight Mes
I had an $1800 Multi going into Adelaide to beat Carlton, htf did we lose that game ???
Oh no. I feel your pain. Sounds like some of the incredible betting losses I have had. I once had a multi that included Manly in NRL as last leg. They led 20-0 at half time. I didn't check the score after that, just assumed they had won. When I went to collect I thought there must be something wrong with the ticket, it was telling me I hadn't won. Manly lost.

Yeah 90% of the time those interviews are a waste of time, players or coach. Most people I've talked to seem to enjoy them unfortunately so I don't think they're going anywhere.

Thank god they haven't mic'd up the coaches or made it a requirement to broadcast the pre-game talk. I guess it's a small price to pay if we avoid that.
I think more like 98% ... how many times have you heard this? -

Boundary rider: "What do you need to change in the next quarter"
Coach: "We need to start getting our hands on the footy"
Boundary rider: "Are you going to start Danger / Watson / Gray in the centre?"
Coach: "We'll have to wait and see"

Brendan McCartney is as old as Walsh and older than Hinkley and he's got all sorts of problems. Conversely I reckon guys like Adam Simpson and Leon Cameron are going to be excellent coaches.

It's really got nothing to do with age, it's all about personality and ability.

EDIT: I actually agree with your point that the success of the Hinkley appointment may trigger a rethink about the type of coach clubs look for, but this just suggests to me that clubs only considering younger guys were wrong to begin with.
Agree with McCartney, but also think he inherited a dysfunctional group that had been weened onto the 'Leading Teams' methodology that involves just about everyone making decisions. This stuff works well in a strong culture where they accept responsibility, but can be a disaster with the wrong group and take a long time to erase from their thinking. He's tried to impose himself as thye authority on a group of guys who expect to have input to everything.

Not convinced about Cameron or Simpson at this stage, but would put Simpson ahead of Cameron as he managed to get the WCE back on track late in the season. You're correct though, it does come down to individuals personality and ability to inspire, rather than age.

We need to get the plus-one up the fat-side with medium intent.

If it helps Tredrea has been pretty glowing of Phil Walsh on MMM this week and doesn't have many reservations that he can do the job and well.

It does help me;)
There has been some good words spoken about him from those that should know.

I'm pretty happy with what he has had to say in the three interviews I have listened to. Finally, we may be getting a coach who has a plan b but has enough mongrel in him to implement plan a that he won't need to use ito_O...plan b that is:drunk:

I like him.Calls a spade a shovel and will tear Roochi a new one by the time the year is over:)

Welcome the Philinator

Spot on. Work in a bank and the Monday sales meeting are the same message, week in, week out - minimal variation. Feedback provided and they see it being negative. Decided enough was enough and now on 12 months leave.

The players would feel exactly the same if no different message.

Something needed to be said, he just emphasised all the wrong points and it became a sook about the weather rather than a clear and focused criticism of the draw.
Correct. And by doing this he provided the players with an easy excuse. Fine to have a whinge, but do it away from the players and directly to the AFL, not to the media and not to a forum where every player will hear his comments. The slightest reason to not push through it in the following game and you end up with the exact performance we produced. I cannot fathom what he was thinking.

Looked like JJ was about to nurse him back to full health when he kneed him in the back of the head.

Although a slight exaggeration, i think this outlines JJ's major issue; hardness.

Grow some balls JJ and kick the bloody goal first, check on the bloke second.

Discipline. Hard work. These will be fixed, you can take that to the bank. We will see what he can do, whether or not he can make it.

To be fair, this was Sando's actual plan, so he was being quite honest.
