Appointed Adelaide's new coach, wow I remember him playing for us back in the mid 80's as a mercenary and boy has he aged since then. Good luck to him I wish him all the best.
**** him he was part of the GR love fest with Collingwood duds

Part of the disastrous time when we traded with Collingwood. They got Cloke, Taylor and Raines (and even incorporated their names into a banner when we played them first time in a Colonwood jumper). They tried to poach Roach, Jess and Bartlett. We got Lovett, Annear, McCormack, Mrakov, Stewart and Brewer.

Walsh was a better player for Collingwood than Richmond or the cash grab at the bears.

That's why I labeled him a mercenary because he was always after the money didn't care who he played for.

Big news back in the day when we poached him after one stellar year with the Magpies.

Barry Price (ex magpie champion) was my PE teacher at the time and he was devastated about the loss.

Walsh and Raines were two big losers out of the poaching war as their careers went south at their new club and they ended up playing for Brisbane together.

Funny you should mention that - Gubby Allen was my PE teacher in 1984, and the previous year it was Gerard Sholly ! I remember Walsh leaving Collingwood was massive news in the day as I think he won "Best first year player" in the competition in 1983.

When Brisbane were founded every club had to nominate 3 players who could go free to the new club. Some clubs nominated kids or duds hoping that the Bears wouldn't take them.

Richmond used it to get rid of some veterans on big money. Richmond nominated Walsh, Graeme Landy and Andrew Cross. You basically kicked him out because he was 26 and barely getting a game. Graeme Landy went to Geelong. Andrew Cross was a big-money signing from the Saints who no one would take and so got cut.

Walsh was shown the door more than being a mercenary.

Unfortunately we've attracted many like this over the years and its still happening (Hampson Grigg and Chaplin are modern day mercenaries )
Not Walshys fault that the club was incompetent unprofessional and generous by paying overs for average grade footballers
I think Adelaide have got a beauty here. Speaks with positivity and no bull factor
Reminds me of Leper and SIr Ken.
Watch him go through the list and get guys in that will only play for the jumper. I like his non acceptance of mediocrity and his maiden speech was refreshing if you're a Crows fan .
Definitely not a baxx rubber or a player molly coddler as he means business from day one .

still reckon hes a cross between mark neeld and gary ayres, good tough guy approach, and assistant and capable in most areas.... but being in full command of tens of millions of dollars worth of cattle, and some precious thoroughbreds like danger, sloan, eddie and tex... he will find his my way or the highway approach will backfire coz he wont get the respect or warmth of the playing group, or his staff or superiors, he is NOT a leader of men and will be found out by mid season and wouldnt be surprised to see a dustup or 2 in the carpark of one of roos/dangers pubs.. :D

he was best first year player...was an absolute fizzer at RFC after big expectations , talks tough , interesting to see how he goes as coach...the experience of Neeld and McCartney recently tells me the modern playing group don't like the hot gospellers

Worth mentioning that although he was best first year player he was 23 by the time he moved to Melbourne from the country and debuted. By the time he was at Richmond he was 24-26 and instead of a player on the rise as was imagined, was already at his peak.

He was pretty handy at Richmond, expectations were that he'd be a superstar, but he was just good and he got condemned for that. And suffered in comparison to the generation before. His main problem was that around the end-of-May, start-of-June every year, as winter began to hit, he would get 'injured' and go missing for 3 months, his 3 years at Richmond always seemed to end at round 11-13 ... no wonder he signed for Brisbane and has spent the last 20 years in Adelaide and Perth
