UHOH...whats the verdict? Is he going to go for pushing that umpire out of the way?
I hope he doesnt go but I think he'll have to go for atleast 2 weeks

There was absolutely nothing in it and as most people have said, it was an instinctive reaction to stop the Melbourne player from running and getting an easy clearance

However, the crap thing is that the Melbourne media especially Eddie and his boys will be going for his head all during this week and thats why im a bit worried that he's gonna be found guilty and given a sentence

Hope im wrong

I hope that theres nothing in it either but I reckon ther'll be alot of pressure at the tribunal to make him go for atleast two weeks after the last 'incident'

He'll be crucified for it for sure. I dont think there was much in it myself but the golden rule is you cannot touch an umpire, and thats what will bring him down, along with the fact he got off 2 weeks ago in what was an all round dodgy decision. The AFL tribunal will pounce on the opportunity to improve public perception. If he gets away with the umpire thing the media will have a field day with it and the AFL doesnt want anymore negative publicity.

There was nothing in it and it was an instinctive reaction to move across to cover the Melbourne player. The umpire was right in his way. I hate it the way a lot of melbourne based supporters instantly jump on the bandwagon saying he blatantly pushed the umpire out of the way etc etc....did they even see the game

You can bet Eddie and his cronies will be all over the McLeod incident too, anything to help Bucks win the brownlow, even if it is getting McLeod suspended. But IMO McLeod deserves the suspension, it wasnt the brightest of plays.

From what I saw, he seemed to loose his balance as he tried to cover the Melbourne player, and grabbed at something to keep his feet.
Unfortunately the 'thing' was a White Maggot.

He should get off, but with the AFL tribunal - who knows?

Well its official ...Phill has been charged he will face the tribunal on Tuesday night. Look at the AFL site for more details!

I say he is gone for a number of weeks. I think its so pathetic these maggots are untouchable. It is only a minor offence and Williams paid for it a few years back. Both would have been better if they did a Phil Carmen on the maggot, at least they would pay for a sentence that was worth it.......

AFL have really lost sight of the game

Yep he's gone. The tribunal are out to get him after he wasn't suspended for the incident involving Lockyer and even though what he did was hardly intentional nor malicious, I reckon he will go for 2-4 weeks.

Totally agree, this was the talk around the table last night during dinner and my lady said the AFL would suspend him just to redeem themselves for the past couple of weeks.....

EXACTLY! You should see how they man-handle the referee's in soccer, and rarely are they booked let alone red carded. Umpires should be protected in the sense that you can't delibrately assault them, not this "accidental contact" crap.

Ahhh this also reminds me of a great quote from Trevor Marmalade...." Yeah everyone knows that you dont touch umpires...their full of disease!

You never know your luck. As I've said many times in the last fortnight, the tribunal didn't stuff up the Matera charge, the investigator/prosecutor (if anyone) did. The tribunal's decision was actually pretty much spot-on in the circumstances.

Maybe Matera will get off with a fine and Eddie and his ilk will be so busy banging on about Tarrant that they won't notice.

From afl.telstra.sellout.com.au:

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=30210

Matera’s clash with Kelsey came as the umpire ran in to set the mark after Matera had given away a free-kick to Melbourne defender Matthew Whelan.

Video footage of the incident appeared to show Matera push Kelsey with both hands with enough force to both surprise Kelsey and to send him backwards.

Matera made no attempt to apologise to umpire Kelsey after the incident and simply raised his arms as he stood the mark.
Geez, this Matera bloke's a bastard, isn't he?

FREE AS THE BREEZE

As Matera himself said lucks a fortune. He should have got time for the Lockyer incident but will not be penalised for this one.I hate to say it but if he does time for this he is being made the scapegoat for the wrong doing of the previous tribunal decision.

There doesn't seem to anything "accidental" about this one despite the footage I've seen from another angle. Sure the melbourne guy was running off the mark and the umpire was in Matera's way, but Matera knew the umpire was there and it's the players responsibility to avoid running into the ump. You don't put your hands in his chest and shove him away even if he's in the wrong position - nothing accidental about that. If the umpire had impeded Matera, then if he had any commonsense (an oxymoron I know) he would have brought Whelan back.

If you want precedents look at how Greg Williams was crucified for what he did and that was far milder than this one. I'd be very surprised if he gets off this.

I accidentally saw something on Fox this morning and Gerard Healy and Mike Sheahan seemed to think the new angle gave him more of a chance to get off, whereas Robert Walls thought he would still go.

Fingers crossed, but not expecting much sympathy given the "evening up" aspect of this tribunal appearance.

I just saw the incident on replay for the first time, NO WAY should he get suspended. In fact, the umpire raised his hand in apology to Fido, which suggests it was his fault not Fido's.

He should not get suspended, but politics and the fact that he has collided with umps before may see him rubbed out for 1 week (they should let him off for KOing him last time ;))

Directly shoving an umpire away and telling him in no uncertain terms to "**** off" is milder? At least Matera has the fact he was chasing a player about to take off in his defence. Also interesting that a brand new poster to the board who lists their team as Fremantle finds their first post on the West Coast board. Whats that now 2 in 2 weeks? I dont understand it myself.

this really sh  ts me. the whole umpire contact rule has for the last 2 years. sure the umpires have to be protected for harm but they are running around in the middle of a contact sport.

the umpire got a shove as phil took off to try and stop a melbourne playing from running off. the umpire was sheparding the mark.

i hope sampi gets the call up and makes the most of it.:
