Some great shots in here. Makes me want to buy a better camera.

I'm more about taking photos at concerts I go to.

love the 2nd springsteen shot, there is no evidence from that one that you need a better camera

My mum took this ninja shot of me and my eldest a couple of years ago on the Glenelg River, it's a favourite of mine. I was holding a fishing rod and catching nothing, but it didn't matter.

#4 is a very special photo, your mum did well :)
i think my mum would have chopped the heads off

i suppose photography is about capturing moments. the two photos below are of my youngest daughter and her best friend and taken a few years ago and of my pics they are among my favs - there is nothing technically special or interesting about them, but the first one captures a conversation between two friends (i like to think it's private and oh so important but no one will ever know)

the third photo is one my all time favourites, taken by a french photographer who was one of the masters of 'candid' photography, there is a really cool story where the photographer chased up the boy and turned up on his doorstep on his 50th birthday with two bottles of wine

My mum had a habit of chopping heads off when using film camera where she couldn't check it instantly hence many a photo was wrecked. We'd rib her about it all the time.

For some reason now that she uses digital cameras it's made her leave heads alone, but yeah I was surprised with that one. She did well.

Hey guys, posted this on the Lifestyle board, hoping to get some feedback from those who don't venture that far down.

I'm after a bit of advice and direction because I'm clueless at the moment.

I've wanted to get into photography for years, my parents have recently moved to a property with magnificent views and my three year old mobile phone just isn't doing the job anymore. I would love something that can take decent city skyline/pretty lights on the horizon shots day and night (approx 25km+) & long exposure shots as well. Somewhat specific I know but it's killing me that I have nothing to take a decent shot with. But photography in general really interests me and not everything will be kilometers away.

I'm looking for a camera that will do the above, allow me to get my feet wet and I can use to learn more about photography. Budget of sub $500, don't care if it's used if it gets me more bang for my buck as long as it's in decent condition.

I don't know if any of this is realistic or too much to ask for on my budget. I have no idea whatsoever about what I should be looking for and I don't want to get conned into something not appropriate or buying somebody else's mistake.

I'm at your mercy. If anybody can offer any suggestions or things I should be looking for or considering, I will be eternally grateful.

$500 should get you a really nice entry level Nikon or Canon digital SLR with fully manual override that will do pretty much all you want and allow you to interchange lenses. When you want to upgrade you can just change the body and keep the lenses. I would probably opt for a canon these days but because my lenses are Nikon I have had to stay with Nikon. I think you can get a Nikon d3330 or even a d5300 for around $500. There are some great sites that review and compare cameras and I would recommend checking out dpreview.com

Some shots from National Parks in USA from 10 years ago, when I went from an old Olympus OM2 to a digital camera for the first time, a Lumix. I used the Lumix for a for a few years until I could afford a decent digital SLR.

great pics everyone, I have been planing on going through my old picture collection & digitising the good stuff, but one to get started was taken less than 1k up the road from my family home in Darwin the morning after Cyclone Tracy, I was 9 at the time & my old mum took it from the car as we drove by before turning around & heading home quick, bit crappy but you get the idea;)

Wreckage.jpg

Taken with my lens which I technically shouldn't have been allowed inside the ground with.
Why not? What's their policy on that? No removable lenses?
