Hey guys, I'm 20 years old and went to Phuket last year in December with my family. We stayed in Karon Beach for 10 days and had a really enjoyable holiday. Did a lot of touristy stuff and ventured down to Patong and a few of the islands. Thought it was a good introduction to Thailand and decided to go back with 5 other mates this November/December.

While I've read most of the stuff said here and understand the somewhat 'sleaziness' of Patong, my mates and I decided to spend most of our time in Thailand there. None of us are bogans or rude Aussies, but I thought we would enjoy ourselves there. As well as this, we've decided to stay on Koh Samui for 4 nights and experience the full moon party. My mates are also keen on checking out Mushroom Mountain (whatever that is).

Any advice or feedback for me? Real keen on the Full Moon Party and have heard a few stories. Staying 12 days and we're just about to book and pay before next week. Cheers

If you are going to Mushroom mountain be very careful because if you have any weak minded mates or blokes for example who can not handle their piss very well its will be a terrible 3-4 hours after the shake

My only tip would be have half a mushy shake and make sure you all have a meeting spot if you get lost

Crazy night something i will never forget do not get sucked in like these other moron's on the mushy's and avoid climbing the Full Moon Party scaffolding that gets put on fire 3-4 times during the night.

I think we're paying about $1200 return. I remember paying about $800 return with strategic airways last year but they went under :(

Yeah feel your pain on that one 6 of us did the same

Did you get your money back we never did

Oh wait you're from Perth. Much more dear from rAdelaide

I just went on Jetstar Asias website and checked for return flights from Adelaide to Phuket departing 6/11/12 and returning 13/11/12

The return fare (no luggage allowance) is $591.28. ($70 total more with 20kg luggage allowance).

Perhaps it's not that much more expensive if one looks ...

Just booked our trip for Nov/Dec. Fly from here to Bangkok on jetstar with thier take a friend for free sale, night there, bangkok airways to samui, 7 nights there, bangkok to kl, 3 nights there, and air asia back. $900 total with exit row for both of the long flights. Were originally going to fly malaysian, but remembered we were poor students

That's cheap.... just a question of whether sitting on a Jetstar flight with no food/entertainment is worth it... Saw Malaysian airlines had a sale late last year for return flights for $600ish and that included everything ... Not sure why I didn't book ;(

I'm not a Jetstar flyer by any means but the issues you raise aren't unmanageable. It's what 6 hours or so to Singapore from Adelaide then a stop then about 90 mins at most to Phuket.

Use an iPad or portable media player if you can't go 6 hours without entertainment. You can buy food in flight. Nothing flash, but it's food.

It's 6 hours.... Plenty to do at Changi if you stop for a couple of hours including food and free internet.

Do the FMP if you get the chance. I've been to both a Black Moon Party and FMP - the former I went to with a sizeable group when I travelled with 4 mates, and the latter I went solo (but met fellow Aussies at my hotel to go with). All in all, each were equally as awesome as eachother.

As for the Mushroom Mountain, my one warning is don't have too much! The magic mushies they give you are blended with ice into a grainy, dark looking slushee/slurpy which tastes wacky. I'd never taken anything of the sort before, so I played it smart and only had half a cup worth of it, which hit me well and gave me a nice buzz in conjunction with the buckets (which are pretty potent by themselves). One of the other Aussie chicks in the group I was hanging around with had a full cup to herself and it hit her pretty hard, and as a result she was pretty sick the next morning.

BTW I love Patong for it's nightlife, and despite the reality being there are quite a few tourists frequenting the local joints, it's actually quite an enjoyable and all around awesome place. Like yourself, i'm far from being a bogan, and am a nice guy, so i'm confident you'll enjoy yourself as much as I did.

If you have any questions, let me know mate, as i'd be happy to answer any you have.

Have booked flights to Phuket in November and have done a complete 180 in regards to where we were going to go. Was going to do Bangkok > Koh Samui > Koh Phangan but we are now moreso leaning towards Patong for 3-4 days > Phi Phi for 3-4 days, then over to Koh Lanta for 3-4 days, then possibly up to Krabi and then to Phuket. Chucked in Koh Lanta as everyone who has gone there seems to love it. Anyone done Koh Lanta? Or anyone ever done Phi Phi to Koh Lanta?

Was there for 3 weeks last October.
I love the place.

Make sure you go down to Klong Jark and swim with the elephants.
Very laid back place

Sounds great! What else is there to do in Koh Lanta? Is three nights enough?

Another option we were thinking of is Patong for 4-5 days, then fly to Koh Samui, stay there for 4-5 days whilst visiting Koh Phangnan, then fly to Krabi (assume we can fly??) then get to Koh Lanta which is only an hour away, 3 nights there before catching the ferry back to Phuket.... Really unsure!

I dont know mate, sounds like a lot of mucking around if you only have limited time.
Koh samui is pretty over rated and Koh Phangan is not everyones cup of tea (the best beaches being up around Ao Thong Nai Pan which is hard to get to)
You may relax and yourself more sticking to the Andaman side.

There's not a lot to do on Koh Lanta, hire a motorbike and cruise the island, hike up to the waterfalls, chill on the beach/pool, and sit back and enjoy the sunset everyday. If you like snorkelling/diving, its a great place to base yourself and go for day trips to some amazing island.
Another good idea is to get some friends together and charter a private boat leaving at 6am for Maya Bay (filming location of the beach). You'll get it all to yourself and everyone will think you photoshopped your photos cause normally there's a 100 people there at a time.

Enjoy your trip either way

All i can say is i went to the April full moon party this year with two other mates.

Best time of my life by far!!! we ended up taking three sweedish chicks back to our hotel on Koh Samui the same night (will post pics ;)).

Oh and i also recommend the sweedish bar on bangla road! fantastic place with great music and a few hot chicks around.
