Prediction Pick 14/Draft Night Predictions

Names in our range that come up for me (that I'm keen on) are:
Matho
Tucker
Ah Chee
Bonner
Milera
Balic
Oliver
Burton

Of the first 3 i can't decide which I'd prefer.

The fact that these guys will start getting picked anywhere from 5 onwards but we can't seem to pick which ones will still be available says to me we probably did the right thing with the trade. Seems we are just in the last couple of picks of a very even section of the draft.

Lenny is one of the best kicks I've seen at our club in the 25 years I've had a membership. He could miss the odd one, but most of them were certain to hit the leading target lace-out and he was one of the best on his opposite foot that I've seen in any team since I started following footy, especially in recent years, when so many don't have an opposite foot. The likes of Rooey would have licked their lips any time Len got the ball out in space within kicking distance of them.

Lenny's skills were underrated IMO. He wouldn't hit 50m bullets like Goddard or Montagna but he had plenty of 30-40m pearlers picking out forwards in traffic. Because he was so hard at the ball nobody seemed to notice.

People were too busy watching the body count he left behind

I like 3 smaller players, possible replacements for Joey in a couple of years.
1. Will Snelling ....... Played seniors SANFL
2. Jade (Jack) Gresham......Played seniors SANFL
3. Daniel Rioli......Future WOW! player & if anything like Cyril, would be happy for him to only put in a quarter of a game & kick 4 goals.
IMO first two would be ready to play from the first round.
Disagree entirely if Rioli is anything like Cyril. Cyril is icing on the cake for the Hawks and great for a side contending. We are 3-4 years away from that and would rather hard honest soldiers. We have X factor players like Billings and potentially DMAC (I think he is going to be really really good).
I don't think we need a 10 possie, 1 goal a week forward with the occasional flashes of brilliance that the media go stupid over. FWIW, no way Cyril deserved the norm smith. He played 1 and bit qtrs of brillance. What about Hodges game? Frawley holds the Coleman medalist scoreless. What about him? As brilliant as Cyril's first qtr and 10 mins of the second was, I don't think it was norm smith worthy. Just sayin.

It's funny i have watched a lot of old Hayes games recently with my son. He was effective and certainly looked great on his left- he even did a check side tight angle goal off the left that would have been difficult on the right, but he had a very odd munty style where it kind of either floated or got a concentric spin going. It seemed to go exactly where he waned it to but I hope my kid never kicks like that. It's not a pretty style to watch, his ability to evade in traffic was exceptional though and his tackling was first rate. He just had a will to win that made him stand above others.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the younger Rioli, he's messier than Cyril. I remember as a junior Cyril was a pretty clean player. The younger one reminds me of Daniel Motlop, has talent but just not quite clean enough with his ball use. Kerbatieh would be still available late and has a real presence, he has the solid build of Puopolo and will convert his goals from anywhere. His defensive game seems to have improved which makes him a Saad upgrade.

I think Cyril is like milne, his goals lift those around him. When you play with a freak you walk taller and they dispirit the opposition who can't handle having worked their arses off for little effect.

Preferences for DP 14

Oliver (likely to be gone by 14)
Balic
Mathieson, Gresham, Tucker

Rice

Snadden (mid) Allen, Gardner (both talls)

Don't forget Lenny was a great seller of candy and that monsterous goal in the drawn GF

I'd disagree re: Lenny's skills. He was a good kick under 40 metres sure, but he wasn't one of the best going around. Would say his kicking ability was like a poor man's Rob Harvey.
Not sure what games you were watching if you didn't rate Lenny Hayes kicking skills.. Poor mans Rob Harvey, you must be taking the p1ss..
Harvey was a master at the 30-40m kick to a leading forward no doubt, but Hayes kicking as previously stated was underrated and he was a fantastic kick of the footy

yeah exactly. like someone said a bit earlier (sorry can't remember who), Hayes to Riewoldt was a thing of beauty. to think Rooey went from Lenny hitting him lace out to the trash delivery over the last few years is depressing!
only gonna get better from here though. we're finally getting kids with good skills!

That classic Harvey kick was more like 20-25m, which Lenny was good at too (off both sides), but Lenny could also do chisellers that went 40m through a narrow gap and didn't get above about head height and had a lot more penetration than Bangers passes. Harves had beautiful weight on his 20m passes though. He just sort of put the ball on their chest as they lead towards him and by the end hardly ever missed, whereas Lenny's kicks would hit your chest or hands a lot harder, but get there more quickly.

Agree 100%

Very underrated our Lenny.

Harvey's handballing was exceptional though. After Greg Williams, it was probably the 2nd best of anyone I've seen in football on that left hand of his, anywhere up to about 25m. Michael Voss another one in that conversation (also left-handed).

Lenny's handballing was also damn good by the end though. Just seemed to have this incredible sense of where everyone in the pack was at any given time and he could get a handball to someone in the perfect position, even if you thought he had little chance of getting it to them, or that he wouldn't have been aware they were there, or that he wouldn't have time to get rid of it. At times it seemed like he must have had eyes in the back of his head and he always seemed to know if he was about to get tackled or not. I got a lot of pleasure in watching his hands out of the packs in his last couple of years. Just did a lot of exceptional work that had me reaching for the rewind button on the Foxtel IQ.

Its kind of a shame that Lenny is seen more of a "heart of football club warrior" then the truly elite player he was. Particularly during 09/10 the man was robbed of a brownlow.

Lenny's handballing was so sharp and accurate. He was very good at using his peripheral vision to find a handball target. We watched a bit of old Harvey footage too. Harvey had a funny Clint Jones style slightly bent legged kick with very little follow through. It was very accurate over a short distance as you said. His thing was the running, he was like a modern footballer in a time where everyone else was flat footed. He must have taught Lenny a fair bit because the crab walking through traffic and evasive work looked like Lenny at times.

Draft night prediction: this thread will still be talking about Lenny, and how similar or different pick 14 is from Lenny.:p

Hayes was forced to frequently kick under pressure, reducing his disposal efficiency. He would never have been considered a goal kicking forward target, but he did pull out a few beauties from outside 50 in a career that spanned almost 300 matches but yielded less than 100 goals.
