Player Watch Pick #18 (2016) - Sam Powell-Pepper

That kick from Boak kind of sums up our terrible forward entries. Should never have gone to SPP, but should've hit Butters 30m out, right in front (and most importantly) all on his own.
No clue how he pulled this off.

We were just being fancy there. Boak didn’t want us to score. He wanted SPP to score. So, he took a risk.

His kick was inch-perfect, which helped; but Geelong had already capitulated. So, SPP actually marked uncontested — even while being sandwiched by two Geelong backs.

A very Travis Boak inside 50 entry kick.

Kicked goal of the year in the SANFL and it wasn't even up for goal of the week.
Here:

It's indeed better than any of this week's nominees.

With the benefit of hindsight, we should have started him in the middle and he might have done what he did in that QF final against Geelong last year and I wrote about in March at this post.
I gather we are smart enough to keep him after that shellacking on Saturday night.

Congrats Sam.

Could be the best thing to happen to him from a maturity point of view
Hopefully he realises the opportunity he is in, in this job with stable finances and support of the club, he can raise children very differently to what he was exposed to.

Where does he primarily play these days? Hbf or mid?

Oh and fwiw : faux news not holding my breath View attachment 1252428

Unfortunately we used him mostly this year as a pressure forward, most likely due to his interrupted pre-season.

Get him fit, play him as a midfielder. His attack on the ball is first class.

Surround him with some class and he'll be a very effective mid and a team mates favourite.

Ferocious at the ball and always the first to support a team mate on field.

You could see how much Ken loved when SPP came on as a sub and scored two goals. He’s a players the team loves - we should be keeping him.

SPP in WA with bad influences isn’t the answer

Agree, but drew plays basically the same role. One of them has to actually win the ball and be attacking with it. Probably better to suited to SPP but his kicking is not great inside 50. Drew's hands are pretty good.

Well baby on the way! WA girl. Schofield to the Eagles.

Wonder if the rumour is true or journalists just joining dots?

Interesting times. If the Eagles are interested its a big policy shift in recruitment.
..what, you mean moving away from recruiting upper class, private school types???
