3rd round compo wasn't it. I only searched wiki. Not like a 3rd rounder means anything I was only joking. :)

I would say that was for Rivers. I only said it so the point could be made clear that our compo hasn't been great.

Sorry to intrude, don't agree with it though.

You have two chances to improve your list each year: trading and drafting. If you only use trading for plugging holes with other club off cuts you are missing a huge opportunity.

The gunston trade is the best the hawks have done - we used our first draft pick and swapped some later ones. We could have picked up someone as good as gunston, but it would still be 3-4 years before they made their mark. Jack had an impact in his first season.

Geelong was able to survive without because they had an awesome crop from 1999. Likewise, the hawthorn 2008 team only had guerra Gilham and dew as imports, the rest of the group was made of bumper crops in 2001 and 2004. Sheesh, if we had've got 2005 right (5 picks in the top 25 - Ellis, Muston, dowler, bailey, Birchall) then maybe we wouldn't have needed those top ups. But having said that 2 of those picks came from trading out Lonnie and hay.

I'm rambling a bit - bit trade is an opportunity that should be as thoroughly explored as drafting in my view.
Didn't say clubs off cuts nor was trying to imply that. I still strongly believe that hawthorns two premierships were mostly resulted from the quality draft picks they netted early mid 2000s, once some of these go I think it will make a very big difference and if they slide down probably the reason for it. I wouldn't say your premierships were 50/59 trade and draft, I would say 70% due to the draft and 30% due to your trades, but your club is a real freakish exception, only Sydney are comparable with trades and premiership success

Ill see you a Jones and raise you a Moloney. Its ironic, Paul Roos, your savior, wants mature midfielders. And your previous coach managed to get rid of one that would be just what you need right now.

Ah yes Moloney, that's great. Pity that he's one of the reasons why Brisbane are in this mess now.

He's your problem now :)

We have others who are worth pick 2. They're all untouchable given the situation we're in. Clubs will usually only give up a star player if they want out.

None of your other players are worth #2.

Not even Rich is worth #2 in a straight swap given his lack of consistency.

ok so no club will voluntarily give up one of their good mids for a midfielder with potential (Aish or whoever goes at 2), what about a 3 way trade that fills a need? e.g

Melbourne: in- good/great mid, out - pick 2
2nd club: in- pick 2, out- good kpp (just an example)
3rd club: in- good kpp, out- good/great mid

where preferably the 3rd club has a strong deep midfield but shallow depth in key forwards or backs, the 2nd club would have good kpp stocks but looking for a little extra class through the middle and a willingness to give up one of their best key position players. It's the only way I can see it happening unless an interstate gun mid wants out which doesn't generally happen too often.

Bulldogs and Freo spring to mind for the 3rd club, but the dogs will get crameri and have a few young options coming through. Freo have some options coming through but with their premiership window wide open they might be looking a key forward who can impact straight away. not sure for 2nd club, maybe north or GWS when they take boyd they might be willing to trade Patton??

just adds another layer of complication to it all but it could be an option

I'm starting to think GWS are the dark horse here. If they get P2 they can package it up with P1 and do a crazy trade.

They could give it a bit of "one red paper clip" action.

They could but they wont. They dont need to package up pick 2 as they have enough talented young kids worth a heap they could offer like Adams, Shiel etc Not quite pick 2 but still right up there.

There wont be a big crazy trade either cause i dont see how 1 single club could offer GWS enough for pick 1 and 2 or pick 1 and Adams. More likely to be separate trades to separate clubs.

It would satisfy a club to give up a really decent player but how are they going to satisfy a contracted player to come. They had all the money imaginable for Franklin to come and wouldn't have cost them anything via FA and still couldn't convince him.

Only way Giants want or get pick 2 is if Shiel tells them 110% that he has to come back to Melbourne and will do so next year without any regard for what they get for him so they cut their losses. If that was going to happen I think we would've heard about it by now.

I disagree, I think we'll see this trade go through by weeks end.

Oh good picks for picks. That will come in handy for the experience we lack.

Wouldn't mind that though. Freeman and Crouch/Sheed might actually be a handier pairing for us than just Aish or Kelly alone, considering their playing styles.

Paul Roos would rate their players too, he loves the Swans and watches them closely, could definetely see him trading pick 2 for one or two of their established best 22.

he's seen their tapes...

So Mahoney has confirmed Sydney are talking to the Dees about pick 2. Hmm.
Considering I don't think Jack, Kennedy, Hannebery or Tom Mitchell are going anywhere the 2 who could come into consideration of what we want to trade for pick 2 would be Luke Parker or Craig Bird. Jed Lamb could be another one added to the deal.

Pick 2 plus pick 20 for Parker (trade value approx pick 10-15), Lamb (trade value pick 20-30) and your first selection Pick 17. That might be the best deal I can come up with although I'm not sure either club would be happy with that.

Parker would be the obvious one. Established inside mid and premiership player with 8-10 years left in his career. Plenty of options to work out a three way trade I'd think.

Doubt it would be Parker, He signed a contract extension only a few months ago.

And apparently Lamb is close to resigning...

Only player I can think of who would be worth pick 2 that Sydney may be interested in listening to offers for would be Sam Reid and Melbourne wouldn't be interested in him.

I could see a club being interested in Craig Bird who has shown a fair bit when he has been able to hunt his own ball in the midfield... But he isn't worth pick 2 by himself and I can't see what we would package with him to get Melbourne interested.

I think the only ones we'd really want from Sydney for Pick 2 are those four whom are off-limits, and for good reason. Would expect the Harbour Bridge to be burned down if Hanneberry, Jack, Kennedy or Mitchell were traded (unless they actually wanted out).
