Watters "Billy has a lot of raw talent, is strong in the contest and has also shown signs of being a more than capable forward. His understanding of what it takes to prepare is growing and he is determined to do the work required. The challenge is now there for our young ruckmen Billy, Tom Hickey and Lewis Pierce to take their games to the next level.”

Well done.
I know Billy, he played junior footy with my son.
My son has kept in touch with him and has been out with him in the last couple of weeks, ( i gave you the early tip he may go to your club).
He will be rapt, as will be his family.
Billy is a lovely kid and i am sure will have a long career with your club.

How many games do we expect next year from Billy?

Ithink I read somewhere he wanted to leave for my opportunity? Or was it solely due to homesickness (and maybe lack of development staff/culture as suggested by some)?

Billy's absolutely pumped to be a Saint!

(I reckon I might have pipped you by a few days with the Billy to Saints word by the way!)

I want to see him play 22 barring injury and if he has a solid preseason.

Only played about 8 games for his career so far,

Hopefully he has a solid pre season, no injuries and gets 15 games in,

Rucking can wear a player down, so really a consolidation year, ready for 2015> ;)

Best of luck with Billy guys. I don't think he was totally into it up here and as such probably didn't put in the effort required. He's not quick around the ground but is a great tap (have seen heaps of him in the NEAFL). It'll all come down to attitude. Rock on.

Some players shouldn't be taken out of Melbourne. They simply have no choice.

It's one of the things about the AFL I really hate.

Forced relocation sucks for many but they can't speak out.

It happens in all sports with any kind of draft arrangement, unfortunately.

Billy actually has family up on the Gold Coast I think - his Dad's maybe? I think his heart was always in Melbourne with his Mum's though.

It's tough when you're not in the 22 regularly - and in Billy's case (much like the other guys who have left the Lions) it might have affected their decision to leave.

I watched a lot of him as I mentioned in the NEAFL and he's definitely got a good tap, but he didn't deserve a spot in our 22 thus far in his young career. If he gets his head right and starts working hard, he might just be a first-choice for you guys in the next couple of years. :thumbsu:

I have to feel for Brisbane. We were pretty peeved when we lost Cripps for peanuts, yet they've lost a much better player for not much more, whilst also losing several others. It kind of feels like we've looted the house that belonged to a recently deceased, but that's part of the business, I suppose.

When you look at what Pearce Hanley said on his twitter it seems there was a definite divide between the young blokes and old blokes. Poor comment, poor culture, poor board, poor list, poor club financially. Makes the Saints seems like a good club to come too. Alllll Abooard!!!

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2013-10-25/from-lions-den-to-linen-house

“It’s very exciting for me. It’s a developing club and there will be a lot of young players so it’s a great place for me to continue my football career.”

“The way the Lions were with Leuenberger in such great form, made it tough for me to contest that No. 1 ruck position. The way Brisbane was for the last two years, it was hard to fit in.”

“For me personally, wanting to move clubs was a bit about coming home – back to my family and support networks. Coming home was definitely a catalyst in the move, but I definitely wouldn’t have wanted to come down to Melbourne if it was to hinder my development as a ruckman and footballer.”

“There are a lot of young boys at the club and a few that I played with at the Northern Knights like Jack Newnes."

“To be honest, we (Scott Watters and me) sort of touched on eventually being that No. 1 ruckman whenever the day is. But also we want to create a partnership between Tom Hickey and myself and he’s got a few strategies in place to be able to enable that.”
