Pick 27

On Ben McKay. I struggle to get enthustic about him. Big man. Good size. Can take a grab. Late year birthday. So in theory he is a guy who everyone should be all over. His production though has been lousy, he is not at all quick, not good at ground level and in that final v Oakleigh was just plain terrible with just the 3 disposals and no impact.

So you don't even have him on your Draft Board then?

So you think he is a Hack and Local Footballer at Best?

Thoughts on Callum Moore then? Do you think he'd slip to our second pick?

I don't mind reading Paige's thoughts each year. I get that she is often wide of the mark but good on her for having a go. I don't know if she has claimed the title 'expert'. If so, she might want to ratchet down the self-promotion a notch to avoid further ridicule.

Basically I really enjoy the efforts of everyone/anyone who's prepared to analyse and make predictions every post-season as it gives us something interesting to read at this time of year, which is critically important if you're not into horse racing or A-League.

I am very grateful to people like Knightmare, Snoop and Chris 25 who provide a real depth of understanding on the incoming talent to those of us who know little to nothing about them.
I agree 100%. Knowing nothing about the next generation coming through I appreciate all the info that others provide. It makes the build up to trade week much more exciting and then lets you cheer if you get a player at 27 who was meant to go at 20 or whine if you get someone who was meant to go at 40.

I have B.McKay on my draft board. In my to be updated power rankings I will likely keep him around 25-30, which is suitable for our draft range, not that he is likely to be available, but when looking at the options available at 27, I'd like someone ideally ranked inside our top 15 and certainly inside our top 20.
(Brackets for my personal ranking) And of those who may be available Hibberd (9), Partington (11), R.Clarke (13) are some examples of this with K.Collins (16), Lovell (17) or Gresham (18) also very acceptable based on my power rankings.

As for whether B.McKay and what kind of footballer he is. He is someone I'd regard as having an outside chance of making the grade. In other words I see the probability of him having a long term AFL career as less than 50%. And when you're talking about a tall. They're not ideal odds, with those key position posts all about superiority of talent by position. So at pick 27 I wouldn't be particularly comfortable with a selection of B.McKay.

Callum Moore is an athletic forward. Has some tricks but have not been impressed by his lack of production for an overager. I'm also struggling to see what role he can play at AFL level to an adequate standard as a roughly 193cm light bodied forward. As a key forward I'd be looking substantially more than the 13 goals from 9 games he gave us through the TAC Cup as a mostly forward who also pushed through the ruck. And substantially more than a lousy 6 marks as his highest tally from any of those 9 games (achieved twice).
Bringing back an old name from last season. But Reece McKenzie for some perspective had 35 goals from the 10 games. And three games with 12 or more marks. And McKenzie unlike Moore wasn't an overager, and also had his games mostly as a key forward, pushing into the ruck at times.
So while C.Moore has been linked to Collingwood. I'm not excited by that. Good an all an aerial mark as he is.

In terms of draft range. Moore most likely splits between our first and second picks as someone who will be considered from around pick 30 onward. It's not out of the question that he may be there at our second selection though.

I'm on exhibition street in Melbourne cafe, a guy sits down I swear I've seen him, then a a manager in a suit sits with him, I'm over hearing a conversation about pre season, I googled the name Ryan Burton he is having discussions about pre season starting I'm a week.

No chance Burton is there at Pick 27

Some mock drafts do have him going later than 27

It's out of control, I know of a kid who plays club under 16 junior footy as a 192cm ruckman, but when he got selected for rep footy wanted him to play as a mid!

I agree its out of control but turning a 192cm ruckman into a midfielder makes sense. Won't be tall enough for the ruck but being in the ruck he'll know what to do as a midfielder.

It makes no sense at all if the kid is under 16. He'll still have a shitload of growing left in him at that age.

Why do we need 190cm+ midfielders? I really don't understand this but I come from a different era. Why do inside mids who spend a lot of their time burrowing in for ground ball need to be so tall??
The taller they are, the more weight they can carry on their frame while still being able to run significant distances. Inside midfielders who are 190cm or taller can carry significantly more bulk on their frame than a comparable 180cm midfielder, and that size translates into a fairly sizeable strength advantage, which is naturally useful in contested ball situations. A 190cm player weighing north of 90kgs is still going to be able to have strong endurance, but if you try to pack that kind of weight onto a smaller player, they're going to take a hit in their running capacity.

Nathan Fyfe, David Mundy, Josh Kennedy, Patrick Cripps - These guys are the new prototype for an inside midfielder, and while there is still the odd Sam Mitchell every now and again, the fact remains that if you play the percentages, bigger midfielders give you an advantage at a contest.

It's been the rage since Judd burst onto the scene, and it's a new paradigm that's going to continue, because picking "footballers" over "athletes" has shown that it'll leave you in the dust.

Cripps is now 194cm and averaged 14 contested possessions a game in his first season. That's 2cm taller than Wayne Carey's listed height. Polly Farmer dominated the ruck in the VFL at 191cm in the 60s.

The game is evolving, no question. Being 190cm+ in the modern game is a clear advantage. You can be a gun at shorter heights, no doubt, but I'd rather be built like Kennedy or Cripps if I was a mid. Geez, I'm 195cm and played ruck/chf/chb in junior footy. Nowadays I'd potentially be a mid... A bloody slow mid too!
