Alex Morgan (28/01/1996. 180cm, 80kg. Oakleigh Chargers)
Medium Defender
AFL biography: Dashing medium defender who has damaging foot skills on both sides and is creative with his hands. Has a good step through traffic and was impressive for Vic Metro in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, playing four matches and averaging 17 disposals. A 19-year-old who has also averaged 20 disposals in his matches with the Chargers this year.

"Alex is a 19-year-old who chose to miss his 18th year to concentrate on uni and play some footy with his mates. He's an outstanding character. I think he could end up being our first player drafted. He has elite speed, a great leap and he kicks the ball really well. He's 19 and he's mature, but he's still an 18-year-old in terms of his footy development. He's had some hamstring injuries this year which have hampered his development, but he played some good footy for Vic Metro and has been good for us too. The way he's approached his rehab has been first class and shows the type of character he has."
Craig Notman, Oakleigh Chargers talent manager

This is from an article in the Herald Sun today "AFL Draft 2015: Who your club should take with its first pick"
The truth is I have no idea who we should pick up with 27 I just thought I would add it to the thread.

COLLINGWOOD

Pick: 27

Ideal: Brayden Fiorini

Otherwise: Aidyn Johnson, Luke Partington

The Pies need classy ball-users with the ability to push forward.

Last season, Collingwood endured the third-worst kicking efficiency in the competition at just 64.1 per cent. Although they brought in midfielders at the trade table, they might hope for one more.

Brayden Fiorini could be their man.

A versatile midfielder with good game smarts, Fiorini will fall within Collingwood’s draft range and would be a handy recruit.

Averaging 32 disposals in the TAC Cup this year, Fiorini chipped in with multiple goals in three of his last four matches with the Northern Knights.

Medium defenders not exactly a shortage at Holden centre (Langdon, Schazz, Marsh, Williams, Ramsay, Sinclair, Toovey, Maynard, Oxley).
I would have thought another forward, small, pacey...goal sneak?

Yeah sounds like a type we are fairly flushed with at the moment; although he sounds like he would have all of those covered for pace. Hamstrings injuries are not something you want for a bloke who's weapon is pace. Freeman anyone?

Really. Your draft profile at the time says you rated Kennedy pretty highly and are now just changing your rating based on hindsight.

Even recruiters make mistakes, so no harm in you being wrong. There's no need to indicate that you didn't rate Kennedy at the time of the draft, when you clearly did.

#18 Collingwood (Via West Coast) - Ben Kennedy (SA –Fwd/ Mid)
Height: 174cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB: 03/03/1994
Recruited from: Glenelg
Style: Brent Harvey
Player comparison:
Range: 13-30
Profile: Very small midfielder, but he can play. Has really elite explosive pace which would be in the very top percentile. As well as that pace he also uses it effectively and willingly takes on opposition players to effect. More than has the performances on the board and showed a lot during the 2011 and 2012 U18 championships. Kennedy is a big accumulator and can hit the scoreboard for a number of goals. Ball use generally very good. Has a neat left foot kick with nice real penetration and hurt factor with it. Very capable of winning his own ball. Marking ability good for a player of his height. I have some queries about eventual position. Not an elite inside ball winner or stoppage player to suggest his inside game develops into anything particularly outstanding, doesn’t really have much of an outside game, not finding enough outside ball then as a forward despite his pace his tackling game is good but not elite as you’d probably expect in a player of this type. Likely he develops into a rotation forward who can push into the midfield with his explosiveness for periods but it will be interesting to see if he can develop into more than a rotation/role player. Kennedy has a big chance of doing what Dion Prestia and Devon Smith have done in recent years in getting drafted early despite lack of height.
I think I know who you are replying to & said person also threw BenKen's name up as a possible mini draft pick at the time too, for us to go after.

Does Alex Morgan have the scope to play midfield Knightmare ? Is he one of those outside players that has a good balance of contested ball? I like the look of him. Has the speed that we need.

No thanks to Alex Morgan, Have enough players like him. Wether he is a star in the making or not imo.
Yes I do agree that we have a lot of types like him that's why I asked if he could play in the midfield. We need to inject some pace and outside run as well and I think he fits the profile.

It's going to be interesting to see if there will be any decent KPF around our pick.

I like his speed and kicking is great but will that translate into a midfielder/winger?

Very outside. Projects as a wing/half back. Not a contested ball winner at all and will in the most part wait on the outside and let others win it and he'll receive.

Morgan is interesting from the angle that he has AFL relevant attributes. And that's why he is being spoken about as a possible with picks 20, 25, 30 onward mostly picks where you're taking a chance and hoping your guy develops.

I see what you did there.

I know it's only a couple of games on video, heavily edited, but he seems to have toe and a decent sidestep but not really a ball-carrier. Also executes his handballs well, but frequently to a player in no better situation or completely selling him out. Nice kick of the footy though and puts them to advantage.

Come on Sampler. You've been on fire lately. You can't steal all the laughs!! :)

I did like it, I promise!

'Like' for a like. It's a good system in Big Footy as well.

Seriously though. I don't mind the look of some of these kids being spruiked. I know they're highlights reels and all that but there do seem to be some talented and promising players avalable at around our mark.

Thoughts on Tom Cole? Admittedly being a local lad he's the potential draftee I've seen the most of, but if we're selecting based on best available rather than positional needs then I would be happy with him as a selection. He's had two good years for the Pioneers and Vic Country, and a strong combine. The coaching staff would have got a firsthand look in our VFL match against Geelong at the QEO earlier in the year as well.

Hine sometimes does this like for like replacement thing. Could Morgan be our Freeman?

Ignoring the humour and onto the football..

Morgan isn't someone I'd look at as a Freeman replacement. He isn't a ball winning midfielder as Freeman is.

Like Freeman in this draft is Partington and R.Clarke if we're looking to replace Freeman. With both of those guys high level speed/endurance athletes who can find the footy in bunches and play through the midfield.

Cole 60/40 isn't available. Versatile and productive. Good all-round game. Probably lacks a best position at this stage because he has played a bit everywhere, and relatively can try to do too much by foot with his efficiency at this stage as a result of that fairly poor. Did very well in the VFL though in his three appearances which will increase his stocks substantially.

Not that I've updated my power rankings but I have him around 28 today.

From what I've heard Geelong are very keen on tommy..

There are always some sliders on draft day.

If we end up with Rioli Partinton or a first rounder who slid I'll be pretty happy.
Yer, it's a terrible shame about Weideman's 2 dicky knees, pop out shoulders, glass jaw & Hammies like...you know. That court case upcoming & the curse put on him by some voodo queen.
Can see him sliding big time.
