Not sure if I am misinterpreting your post, but isn't the ultimate result that picks below the academy / father son players where the bid is matched effectively drop down in absolute terms, with lower round picks rising up because the bundled picks GWS and co. will use to reach the required points total to match the bid go away? I.e. Expansion at the top end, contraction lower down.Think of it as two groups of players, one group are academy players, one group are players in the open draft. The current draft order is indicative of what talent we have access to in the open draft, ie. we will take the player we deem to be the 27th best player from that group.
Now lets assume that 5 academy players are bid on, and matched, before our pick 27. This pushes our pick back to 32. The players taken by those academy picks ahead of us though, are from that seperate group, not available in the open draft anyway. So despite our pick now being 32, we will still have access to the player we deem to be the 27th best in that group of players in the open draft. The only thing that changes is the number next to the draftees name.
Conversely, if Melbourne bid on Mills and Hopper for example, their pick goes from 3 to 5. That number though, is irrelevant, because they will still have access to exactly the same players they would have had access to if they had not placed a bid. At the end of the day, it's in Melbourne, or whomever else bids early's best interests to make those bids, as it could potentially have an impact on GWS or Brisbanes ability to afford their lower rated players that they may be interested in.
