Prediction Pick 3 for 2023

1- TDK, a competent and competitive ruck is the missing piece that will take us from making up numbers in the 6-10 ladder positions to a top 4 contender.
2- Motlop, see him running in the top group in training, must have an engine and has the ability and footy smarts to take his game to the next level.
3- Cunners, needs an injury break and the side needs his pace.

1. TDK - nothing new here. Our contested football matched the best in the comp this year, and if this guy takes the next step then it would mean we ARE the best in the comp. Sky's the limit for the young fella.

2. Gov - already covered. Has the marking ability, the kicking skills on both feel and genuine pace. Him playing a full year in our backline changes it to AA-quality across the board.

3. Cerra - while I quite liked his first year in navy blue, I think that this bloke has another gear too. Potentially a bit harsh as he also had some niggles this year, but his kicking at times left a lot to be desired, especially for a player of his talents. Genuine inside-outside mid that will likely find himself on a wing for chunks of 2023, I really want to see him tidy up his kicking a bit.

IIRC my three last year were Kennedy, TDK, Kemp, all of whom I wanted to see take that next step to establish themselves. Kennedy got a big tick, but I could easily list the other two again this year, albeit for different reasons.

But instead I'll say:

Cuningham - So much potential as yet unrealised. Would love to see a big, injury-free year for him.

Marchbank - Another in the same boat. Want to see him fit and firing.

Martin - Who does he want to be as a player? Think we may find out this year.

Great thread discussion.

It’s actually quite hard to choose only 3 but after much thought my 3 would be.

1. The injury plagued (take your pick)
McGovern, Cunners, Marcchy, Martin. Even to a point Williams and weiters. Would love to see what they can put together in a solid uninterrupted pre season and season.
2. The upside talent. Caroll, kemp, Motlop. Who has a breakout year? I believe Carrol will succeed before kemp.
3. The wings. Cottrell, LOB. What happens to these boys now we have Acres, Hollands, Binnsy. We recruited for running beasts for outside mid and wing. Are they at risk? How much does Vossy and MC change it up?

If Dow can get productive, then we are in a very good spot.

I was going to write in my post for the 3. “The forgotten” Dow.
We were told it was either Dow or setters that was going to go and as we know it was setters but what does that now mean for Dow?
Will he get a spot and run in the seniors? Or is it another year in the 2’s
Would love to see him get a decent crack in the seniors but at the same time can’t see it happening.

Ok ok. Only 3. Sorry, Haha!

Acres: We lacked on the wings this year.
At his third club now. He knows that he’s been brought in for a specific role. Will be watching him closely next year.
Excited and hopeful.

Carroll: upside talent. Desperately want to see a breakout year. We all hear the kid has talent and skill in spades. I want to see it on the field in big games in 2023.

Cerra. Had some good game this year. Want to see high output and level of consistency. Him Crippa and Walshy to own and dominate the midfield next year.

McG - Agree with previous posts, if he plays more often than not we make and win finals.

Boyd - Excited to see him make the back pocket his own. Think he is more than capable.

Philp - Talented but coming from a long way back. With a clean run at it he’ll give himself a chance.
agree that these are difference makers in areas/positions we don't excel at...all r v pacy who add real meters gained with long, penetrating setup kicking...[Philp is less proven but the break-away from packs acceleration is exciting as the much vaunted trait from the draft bio/footage that we were sold on initially]

Wing: Can LOB announce himself as a bonafide classy user (left peg bonus), 2-way hard runner that cracks in to contests & finds open space.
Med Fwd: Really like to have someone in the mould of B. Pearce/B.Fritsch, see Jack Martin as our only real option to burst through in this role*. Makes a difference with another regular avenue to goals around our KPF’s.
3rd Fwd: JSOS to clunk his overhead marks & kick the clutch goals plus regularly hit the scoreboard. TDK to assist on this front too, big marking whilst hopefully steadying the yips*
*M.McGovern could also fit the bill to boost the goal scoring, if moved forward with greater output than previously shown as a Blue.
This could also mean that Marchy has returned to full flight & embedded himself down back

Would dearly like to see DC tear it the shreds, POD from our other players with his pace & clean handling when on, if ever free from injury.
Boyd’s run & disposal on the highlights reel, pleasure to watch when targets are hit & opens up play to our advantage. Another point of difference.

Genuinely excited about the scope of so many players on our list, so I'm just going to go with the 3 guys who I think are critical to us taking the next step.

TDK: We need this to be the year he genuinely arrives. 70% up forward / 30% ruck I think is the ideal split for TDK. If he can kick 20-30 goals we'll be in good shape.

Marchbank: A fully fit Marchy just flat out makes us a better team. Weitering and Young have had to be lock down/accountable but we've sorely missed that third tall interceptor and Marchy does this well.

Cuningham: We've seen glimpses of what Cunners can be. I think back to that game against Ess before the ACL where he went absolutely ham. He's dynamic, he's classy, he's probably our best kick into the forward 50, good things happen when he has the ball, and he's a difference maker who I believe can rip a game away from an opposition in a short instance.

Cheating a bit here but I'm also excited by what Boyd, Motlop, Carroll, Kemp, and Dow can bring in 2023.

Man, this is hard to pick just 3 this year. If I had to though, it'd be:
  1. Motlop - super keen to see Mots emerge in his second year and continue to establish an awesome small forward duo with Durds. Has so much natural talent, flair and nous to go with his physicality - all things we'd missed in this role for a long time.
  2. Kemp - I've been keen to see this guy find a spot in our side since we drafted him. He's now fit and hasn't lost any talent - just needs to play and find his role. I've still got no idea what that role is, but I have a feeling that he'll be rolled gold once it emerges.
  3. Boyd - I think we've found our premier small defender and will free up Doc, Zac and Saad more regularly. This kid will establish a spot in the BP in 2023 and - if he can - a piece of the puzzle will have just clicked in. I was hopeful when we picked him up, but now I'm bullish as hell.
Special mentions: Martin, Marchbank and McGovern - all who have had issues with injury and inconsistency. I'd love them all to secure a spot in the best 22 and if any managed to play 20 games, they'll make a world of difference across the season.

Ok, you didn't want it (again) - now here it is (once more).

Name the 3 players you will be closely watching or hoping the best for in 2023 and why. Call it breakout, realized potential, turned the corner, last piece of the puzzle, whatever.

1. McGovern
2. Boyd
3. Cowan

Now get on with it........
i think Gov is already there...just has to stay injury free
Boyd also...looked best 22.....looked comfortable to maintain required amount on contribution game wise

i am hoping Dow.....is not a discard in 2023........he really needs someone to take him under their wing help to figure himself out.......he has abitity just has to take it
even if he is a depth player only...he will be required

1 Jesse Motlop (a much watch player, either at VFL or hopefully mostly AFL level)
2 Brodie Kemp (hopefully he is over his chronic injury problems, certainly has all the tools and footy smarts to be a very good contributor)
3 Paddy Dow (I am expecting an LOB style breakout resurrection season from Paddy);

1. McGovern - Much maligned over his time with us. We have seen glimpses of what he can do with his intercepting down back and beautiful long kicking and vision. What I wouldn't give to see him have an injury free season in this role.

2. Silvagni - I just love Jack. I think he's the smartest player on our list and he has the most navy Blue heart out there. But they're coming for you Jack. They being supporters who don't know where you are best suited and players coming from underneath who offer a point of difference and potentially more x factor as a third tall forward. He's off contract this year ... he needs to elevate his game and secure his position.

3. Kemp - An extremely important season for Brodie. Where can he break into this side? He can plug gaps all over the park, but not to a high level as yet. He has to show a lot or I fear he will want to leave and we won't try to stop him.

Really wanted to fit Motlop in here. I think he's silk and will be an absolute gun for a long time to come. Has those Motlop genes but isn't at all conditional.
