Pick 36: Rory Taggert

Re: Pick 36: Rory Taggart

The only Taggart I've ever heard of is the cop from Beverly Hills Cop!

Sounds like he and Tynan are the type of players we need across halfback. Could release Grimes to the midfield in a couple of seasons if his body holds up. I think we will load up on mids in the next draft. GWS are the only club who can walk away 100% happy from this draft.
They didn't get Longer, so I doubt they're 100% happy.

Not unhappy about this pick, even if it was a bit left field, and it seems we went for 'best available' with Tynan. Let's see how and where he fits in.

From BP:
Barry Prendergast said:
“He’s from the North Ballarat Rebels and he’s a versatile player being able to play in all areas of the ground.”

He’s plays a bit in the style of Dustin Martin (!), because he’s a penetrating kick and he’s got clean hands. He’s strong overhead. He’s got a pretty good package. He snuck under the radar a bit.

“He was rated as an under-16. I remember, I was an AIS selector in his year and his names came up for grabs in terms of that. He didn’t have the best year as an under-17, but he’s from Horsham and relocated to St Pat’s [Ballarat] last year I think that really helped him and his footy. He finished off the year really strongly.

“We saw him as a pretty good package and also a player we don’t have a lot of - we’re getting some good contested ball players into our footy club. He’s a contested ball player and we’re getting in blokes of pretty good size.

“We think - as with all young players - that there is a fair bit of upsize and improvement in him in terms of improvement.”
(emphasis mine)

Re: Pick 36: Rory Taggart

At least we got 3 players who look physically ready to play AFL next year if good enough. I'm guessing that Neeld won't be using youth and lack of physical maturity as an excuse.

Lol @ Darrou and Bolger not even being selected, shows the average BF members intelligence!

Re: Pick 36: Rory Taggart

Definitely a strong mark for his size. Big body mid who's strong at the contest.

His game sounds a lot like Rory Sloane's.

Re: Pick 36: Rory Taggart

Plus Waldhuter, who was, apparently, a steal in the second round.

... always the way.

I wonder if one of the keys here is that the clubs have access to the actual players, and are assessing them on a lot more than their on-field performances.

^^^

That and they don't watch one YouTube clip and pronounce themselves armchair experts like plenty on BF ;)

It's their job so you expect they know their shit better than us. I saw about a half a dozen TAC cup games this year and consider myself nowhere near qualified to pass judgement on anyone other than the obviously good players (of which almost all went to GWS). Only one I think may end up being a bit of a bargain is Jackson Paine at pick 50 to Collingwood, but he is slightly man childish so you never know I guess. These recruiters can judge how kids will develop far more scientifically than mugs like us!

Re: Pick 36: Rory Taggart

Logger, you highlighted the wrong bit!

He’s plays a bit in the style of Dustin Martin, because he’s a penetrating kick and he’s got clean hands. He’s strong overhead. He’s got a pretty good package. He snuck under the radar a bit.

Oh Mr Prendergast, you do go on! ;)

Re: Pick 36: Rory Taggart

To be honest, I like this pick.

I've only seen a little of him but he's got some talent; he does need to work harder though.

Re: Pick 36: Rory Taggart

If you scope out his account he's had twitter long before he was drafted

I dont twitter just a joke about how some on here and some of the players love the thing...kinda like he was doing it to fit in or was encouraged...

Obviously he was cool way before he joined the club :)

Rory's a great kid from my club the Horsham Saints. He played under Nathan Buckley in the Vic u16's a few years ago who apparently saw a great deal of potential in him back then. Played a few senior games for us this year around Rebels commitments, has a great set of hands as lead up flanker type with a lovely long kick. Good strong body too.
Can't help but think his name might have been mentioned last year in some Collingwood meetings, with Neeldy snapping him up early to beat the Pies to him.

I think the expectation and maybe excitement of Rorys arrival is dampened through the fact there is so little hype about the kid pre-draft. A few recruiters liked him but i dont think alot of the Rebels boys get in the spotlight down in Ballarat.

Also being a midfielder at pick 36, i think that not many of us have expectations of him to develop into a great footballer. I dont see why he cant, many midfield types slip through the draft, Redden, Rockliff, Mckenzie ect all later picks who are looking really good now Redden was about 22 but still.

I think the attributes that Taggert has been linked with, physicality, Great Kick and Hands put him in a really good position going forward and time spent in an AFL environment will benefit him alot. if he can get his hands on the ball then really he is in the ball park.

Edit can kick goals, maybe throuw Sylviain the middle and put him on the hff?
