I'd rather we take a victorian, the ranga perhaps, then there will be no homesickness or trade talk. Haven't seen much of Morabito, but I like the Ranga's speed, but his ball use and decision making aren't great, but plenty of upside.

In all seriousness...

Christ, he would be better off without a mouth guard. Get those things knocked out and new choppers put in.

The club has said that they will go with a midfielder. If Morabito, Martin, Scully and Trengove are gone by 5, the list of best available mids in no particular order is as follows:

Cunnington - Tough as nails and a real competitor. Good size and can play up forward as well as in the middle. Not as silky smooth as Martin/Lucas.
Lucas - Tall outside mid/hff. Gets a bit of the ball and by reports from WA folk, can really use it. Plenty of room for physical development.
Rohan - Lightning fast, heaps of x-factor, loves to get amongst it. Question marks over his skills and understanding of the game. Fades in and out of games.
Stevens - Tough inside mid. Don't know a great deal about him really.
Tapscott - Booming accurate kick, good natural footballer. A little on the pedestrian side pace wise. Can play forward also.

This information is derived from reading posts from others who claim to have seen these guys quite a bit and first hand observations of highlights packages. Not very reliable but hey, how many recruiters post here?

I would go with one of Cunnington or Lucas, however if Butcher slips I have a funny feeling we may end up with him. Could be great, but we need quality mids.

Really want Martin though. The guy will be a gun. Just knows how to play the game and is a real good size for a mid with a beautiful kick on both sides. The thing I like most though, is that in games he seems to have more time than others. That is a priceless quality that is impossible to teach.

Is he a Dandenong Ranga?

i saw him on the wa news the other night and when it comes to speaking he is very much in the lachlan hansen mould

Freo will take Morabito over Martin. Richmond concerns me though, they will take Trengove if available but if he's gone they will take Martin. Not Butcher.

This is how I see it .
Scully Butcher melbourne. Melb still need kpp and Butcher is still the best Key Forward. Dont worry about his form of late he's been injured all year and melb and all others know it no long term concerns for him . That means

Richmond should take Trengove. I just cant see them letting him get passed them. They still need grunt in the middle with Ben c only tempory .

Freo then you'd expect take Moribito He's the next best He's a Local been in good form and suits thier needs.

Leaves us with Lucas Martin Cunnington as the next best mids (that has been stated we are after mids ) . Who we pick is up to bryce and the boys . I'd be happier with martin or cunnington as hard nuts but Lucas is good to tho more outside.

I also really want to get Martin.
But.
The only way we will get him is if Melbourne draft Butcher so then Richmond will take Trengove over Martin assuming Fremantle will take Morabito then we will get Martin.
or
Melbourne draft Scully and Trengove the Richmond draft Butcher because in the last to years they have drafted a ruckman and a midfielder so now maybe it's their time to draft a forward.

i think it will go like this

scully
trengove
martin
morabito

will be interesting to see if we take big butch

we need mids but we dont exactly have a gun forward line and imo butch is the most likely of these kids to become an afl superstar

Martin at 5 for me, thank you. Although if he was gone by 5, I wouldn't want Butcher or Rohan they seem a bit risky too me.

Melbourne has zero KP depth. Having two early picks allows them some flexibility. If Butcher is any good, surely they have go for him at pick 2? They don't want to do a Richmond (Deledio/Tambling, missing out on Roughead and Buddy) and end up with all eggs in one basket?

yeah i dunno

on footy classifieds hutchy sounded pretty sure that melbourne were taking 2 mids

If Butcher is the best available at 5 I'd take him. We need midfielder's but I still think you recruit who you believe will be the best player in a position you still haven't filled, even if some others are more glaring weaknesses.

Agree....our recruiting panel should list in order of quality and tick them off as they get called.....best available.......mid or KPP doesnt matter....

If Butcher is available I really hope we select him. His high rating is deserved in my opinion, and his season has been hampered by injury and the fact that he's often double teamed.
Because the GC and GWS will have their share of the first few picks, quality KP players will be incredibly difficult to come by. We are banking very heavily on Tarrant getting fit, because otherwise the only other forward option that we have is Petrie (assuming we play Hansen in defence) who is 26 now, and thus nearing the end of his career when we are peaking.

Getting Butcher will sure up our KP prospects for many years. Then, as our KP players like Butcher, Hansen, Tarrant, Goldy and even Thompson and Grima develop (remember, big men take time) we can constantly add midfield class in the next few drafts, where there will be pleanty of high quality midfielders, but less and less quality KP players.
I believe Melbourne will almost definately select Scully and Trengove to complement guys like Grimes, given their acquisition of Watts last year, and Frawley two years ago and Morton unlikely to be a genuine midfielder.
From there, it's a pool of Butcher and a few evenly matched midfielders that you could mount a case for pick 3, in Martin, Rohan, Cunnington, Morabito, Lucas and even Tapscott depending on his DC.
If we don't get Butcher, i'd hope it's Cunnington or Martin first. Any premiership midfield is built around solid and relaible midfielders like Cunnington and Martin. Flashy guys like Rohan and even Morabito can be acquired later on in the developmental process.
