If Butcher is the best available at 5 I'd take him. We need midfielder's but I still think you recruit who you believe will be the best player in a position you still haven't filled, even if some others are more glaring weaknesses.
Disagree. Look at Hawthorn and the Bulldogs, they have glaring holes in their side due to years of drafting the best available. Even though our KP forward stocks aren't exactly first rate, our lack of quality in the midfield is of such concern that we simply must draft to a need IMO. When are we next going to get the chance to add such a quality young mid to our side after this year?

If we can put together an A grade midfield, the rest works itself out. Just look at the WCE Premiership side of 2006.

havent u heard about all the top 10 picks the GC are gonna give us for hales

If the Melbourne Recruiting guys had a sense of humour, they would draft Scully at Pick 2.

It's not such a silly idea, depending on who they think can best cope psychologically with the profile of being forever more the number one draft pick.

that bad feeling wouldnt be based off of a 4 minute youtube clip from 1 game would it

I expect the Ranga will absolutely burn up the draft camp with an off the charts beep test and sprint time.

I still think our KP fwd stocks are worse than our midfield stocks.

Tarrant doesn't come up,, then we're seriously looking thin.

If Butcher is available, get him.

If not then grab the next best mid because apart from Butcher the KP's look average by comparison.

Totally agree. Build the midfield and everything else will fall into place.
Cunnington for mine. He's a ferocious gut-runner who knows where the goals are. There are better kicks(Martin, Tapscott) but put enough goal kicking ball magnets in a team together and special thinks happen.
Scott has indicated that winning the contested ball is what he's about. Cunnington seems to have real need for the ball and fills the bill. He'll make it as a player.

I certainly hope we draft the next best (in our recruiters' eyes) midfielder, and the same with our second pick. No point drafting a KPF when we can't get the pill into the F50! Boomer won't be around forever either so it's a great chance to add a future gun with our high pick in the last uncompromised draft.

Draft Butcher. Set up the key back and key forwards and then build the midfield. It would take ages to build a midfield and then find good key forwards, other way around is much easier.

Get Butcher....we can get mids in any draft.

Draft Morabito....we will have to draft a second rate key forward or wait ages until we can get a prospect like Butcher.

Midfielders are a dime a dozen as are key forwards. Key backs are also relatively easy to come. But consider this... the last decent ranga to be drafted was Adam Cooney in 2003. Prior to that, you have to go back to 1999 and Cameron Ling. This year's draft offers Gary Rohan and I say we'd better snap him up. Otherwise, with GC17 and WSyd coming in, it could be 2020 before we get a chance to draft another quality ranga.

I would be happy with either:

Butcher, who by all reports would be a great player.

or Cunnington, who (outside of Scully, Trengove) would be close to the best mid out there. I think Martin would probably make a great player also, but the attack on the ball displayed by Cunnington is just incredible.

Cunnington seems to be a mixture of Sam Blease, Mathew Bate and Anthony Stevens, from the little I've seen - smart, strong and tough with some good skills as well, practically everything you need in a midfielder.

Having Ziebell and Cunnington with Swallow at center bounces would be incredible. Opposition teams would get monstered in a few years.

For those of us who don't follow the TAC Cup comp, will any of these potential first round selections be on show on Friday night if we go to the VFL grand final?

Looks like Melbourne will take Scully and Trengrove given how Trengrove has been going in the SANFL.

I think Richmond will take Butcher at #3 and Fremantle will take Morabito at #4. That will give us a choice of possibly Martin or Rohan. I prefer Martin as he has great skills on both sides, can play in or out but Rohan has explosive pace and probably has more X factor about him.

I'd definitely go with Martin though if he was available at #5.

Isn't it Trengove?

were you impressed with Butchers 1.6 for Maffra on the weekend?

I'd probably rather turn him into a defender.

I think you guys will end up with one of Rohan, Morabito or Cunnington.

Butcher's form since being touted as a top 2 pick at the start of the year has dropped considerably. He has big kicking issues, like last week he kicked 1.7 and 1 out on the full in a Grand Final. He could be the big slider, even to 6-12ish. KPF's touted as possible 2nd or 3rd draft picks have outperformed him nearly all year, big question marks on him. Who knows, your recruiters might think they can rebuild his kicking action from scratch and then you would possibly have an A grade forward on your hands. So in saying all that, Melbourne will go Scully and Trengove (2 best players in the draft) and I've also heard around the traps we're after Martin.

Did anyone else here listen to Michael Turner being interviewed on SEN this morning?

It was obviously in relation to G Ablett. He recalled how lucky he was to coach a Geelong Falcons team which that year had Ablett, Hodge and Bartel in the midfield. They didn't win the flag that year, falling in the prelim.

He was then asked by Dr Turf for his thoughts on Tom Scully, with Dr Turf being a Melbourne supporter. Turner said "He's an excellent player. Unfortunately for his side he was injured on the weekend but they still beat us. He's exceptional".

Then without prompting he went on......"But I can tell you Turfy that your club have spoken to me about two of our boys (at Geelong Falcons) so I wouldn't say that Scully's a definite for you. I tole them that I have as good a midfield this year as we had with Ablett, Bartel and Hodge back in their day. Similarly, this team lost in the prelim final.

Two of my midfielders are going to be superstars, in Cunnington and Rohan. They're different types of midfielders but the attraction to Melbourne is that they're from the same local arrea and have an uncanny understanding between each other. They also look after each other.

Besides that, and taking into account the current AFL stars I mentioned, the two current boys (Cunnington and Rohan) are the toughest I've ever had in Cunnington, and the most exciting in Rohan. They're destined to be AFL superstars and if they can get to the same club I'd be elated!"

One of those two and I'll be extremely rapt!

Turner has been spruiking these two for some time now, but very interesting re Melbourne's intentions. Cunnington/Rohan 1&2? Surely not. I reckon the dees are just covering all bases, ensuring they get the best picks possible. Scully would have to be no 1. You can't be the best going around for almost 2 seasons and be passed up for a 'maybe champion' in Rohan.

It is looking increasing likely that we will get one of these two if the Martin to Richmond thing and the Butcher is overrated thing is true.

Very interesting and exciting article, Toes.

Makes our pick even more valuable in that we either take one of these guys or, if the shock happens, Melbourne trust Turner and take one or both of them, Trengove or Mirobato can slide to us.

We will do very well out of this draft, I think.

Time for Lewis Bryce to roll the dice I reckon. If the Ranga lives up to promise, he will be the franchise player we have lacked for too long. Let the Melbourne's of the world play it safe.

He still expects the Dees to take Scully but it raised HIS interest that they were enquiring about taking the two of his kids at once, with a view that MAYBE two guns with such a close relationship would be better than one superstar kid and another gun who don't have that understanding.

It certainly made me think how perfect it would be for us to somehow prise another top pick so we nabbed both!

BTW.........they're all "maybe champions" at this stage B Tron.
