After reading that AFL Blog about 2009 Draft. I have to say that we would be silly not to get Butcher. He is a powerhouse unit like McKernnan in the making.

Just a little interesting thing I read on contestedfooty.com. I'm not sure about this site at all, as it is the first time I've read anything from it. A rundown of Gray Rohan, stats, weakness, strengths and where abouts the author of the descriptions, who i'm yet to determine, thinks he will be drafted.

http://www.contestedfooty.com/2009/09/gary-rohan-2009-afl-draft-prospect.html

"Rohan will get drafted there is no doubt about that, much of the debate when it comes to Rohan centers around what his draft value is though. Potential is a dirty word to a lot of people and the Rohan hype is all about potential. I have heard people mention him as a top 3 prospect, which is beyond unlikely in my view. Others are more measured and have him in the top 10 which is a possibility but personally I have him slotted as a late first round/early second round pick at the moment, but perhaps the draft camp will reveal more."

Interesting, was written about three weeks ago. Either this person doesn't have a clue or things have changed dramatically in regards to the amount of hype Rohan is getting.

Take it with a less than a grain of salt.

Contested Footy is run by a bunch of enthusiastic Uni students. 90% of their content is second hand. While it's interesting at times, the commentary on BigFooty is, more often than not, more insightful than Contested Footy.

No disrespect to them though - they make a good fist of it at times.

..........lets just pick the best available.............be it a flashy Ranga...in an under Mid or KPP...........its hard to pass judgement based on 2 minutes of you tube............I think we can safely assume that Joyce has done more homework than this............

This is a nothing post. Isn't the whole point of this thread to discuss who is the "best available"?

What is "best available", anyway? The best midfielder, the best key position player, the best ready-made player, the best player in five years, etc?

In rank of who I would want at the club:

1. Tom Scully
2. Jack Trengove
3. Dustin Martin
4. Ben Cunnington
5. Kane Lucas
6. Gary Rohan
7. John Butcher
8. Anthony Morabito
9. Koby Stevens

Obviously Trengove and Scully will be gone by pick 5. The question is what will happen with the butch. If Melb take him then Rich will surely go with Trengove. Freo will go Morabito, leaving us with Martin. Happy days.

If Melb don't take the butch, he could slide all the way to us and beyond. The talk is if Scully and Trengove are gone, then Richmond go for Martin. Freo go with Morabito and we have a choice between Lucas, Cunnilingus, Rohan, Butcher and Stevens. Cunnilingus is awesome, so go with that.

I would say the best for North's needs depends on what our goals are as a team. If we think we can have a tilt at the flag in five years, the choice would probably be different to if we are aiming for a flag in three or one in 2010. Despite our thinness in our forward stocks, it has been said on numerous occasions that the best available mid, true mid would be the best available.

Despite what many believe, I think that the best available is Cunnington. If the less probable occurs and Richmond go for Butcher, if we have a choice of either Martin or Cunnington, we should go for Cunnington. But I don't think that we will have to make this choice.

We are going to get a gun player no matter what: Cunnington, Martin, Morabito or even Lucas would be great gets for North.

I would think that the roos would take Scully, Trengove, Morabito or Butcher before Sheppard, but due to them likley all going top 4 i think you guys will take Sheppard. Your probably asking youselves who is this guy but i have heard from insiders he is a real chance to go the roos at pick 5. Hes a super quality player and could be something special. HBF runner, who reads the play well takes pack marks runs fast and now has an elite kick. He has played very well at seniors in WAFL for east freo and will be groomed as a midfielder who starts his career as a HBF. He can play anywhere.

Wouldnt be suprised to here his name called at pick 5 for your mob. Dont quote me on it but i have heard it from insiders that he is a massive chance to go to the roos with pick 5.

yea ive seen quite a bit of brad sheperd for east freo and he is a good run of the mill half back flanker IMO

would be very disappointed with that selection

Pick 5 you say. Yeah and I have 3 testicles.:thumbsu:

Now that Melbourne have traded McLean...Trengove is a lock for top two. If he wasn't already.

AND he will play over 200 games for them from day dot.

Blah blah, blah.

I'd say your trolling big time, but anyway, as most know around here and in the footy world, we have a surplus of HBF's.

Why the **** would we draft more of that type player, especially with pick 5?

Maybe you should get some facts straight before you post your negative, uninformed, rubbish responses.

Sheppard started as a forward, has played across the midfield for East Fremantle, and back for the WA 18s

Sheppard is a gun. He will go first round but i don't think he will go top 5. Him and Aaron Black from peel have been real late bolters. If sheppard has a Draft camp or state screening, don't be surprised if you see him in the top 10.

Ive seriousily heard that the roos are very interested in Brad Sheppard. He will end up playing as a midfielder. Similar player to Bryce Gibbs. If you dont want that than dont take it. May even be used as a half forward flanker and groomed into a midfielder but his best spot is a Bryce gibbs role for calrton similar to how enright plays for geelong. that sweeping role across half back from a midfielding type. Luke Hodge pretty much won hawks the flag with this.

I knew you wouldnt take this down to well but Brad will go between picks 5 - 15.

We will get him with our 2nd first round pick :thumbsu:

Things that are confirmed:

Melbourne will take Scully with pick 1

Freo to take Morabito

The Dockers have fourth pick in next month's national draft and have targeted brilliant on-baller Anthony Morabito, 17, as their first choice.

Melbourne get pick 11 from Carlton and lose Mclean

If Butcher is still there at pick 5, i say we get him.

Quality tall forwards are rare and those who are quality, go very high in drafts. Pavlich, Riewoldt, Kozi, Buddy, Roughead all were top 5 selections. J.Brown was a father-son selection.

With the GC and GWS coming in, quality tall forwards are going to be more rare and harder to find than midfielders. And if Tarrant does not come up, or even if he does, Petrie will be about 32 and almost gone by the time our current playing list peaks. Josh Smith has not shown a lot too to be honest.

If we can invest in a couple of raw potential mids(like sam wright in 08) with picks 21 and Gibson's pick(18-25), then our midfield will be more than sound for the next 5 years with guys like Swallow, Ziebell, Urquart, Anthony, Wells, Greenwood and Wright.
