Well the season is over for Carlton now and we move on to the Draft/trade time of the year. We have pick 6 in the draft, who do you want Carlton to take?

Some Assumptions. Watts, Rich & NicNat will most likely go in the 1st 3 picks. For the sake of the poll assume all players in the poll are available for our pick. Which 1 do you take ????

I'm on the Ziebell bandwagon !!! I just think he adds something different to the playing group, can spark up our forward line a bit and then go for a KPP with our 2nd rounder.

This Hurley guy sounds good but I have never seen him.
I have seen Johnston and he is very good however I still picked Hurley as Johnston is prob a bit too short to be a CHF/CHB which is obviously the two positions we're after.

If Hurley is still around, which I don't think he will, I cannot see any reason why we wouldn't take him. We are in huge need of another tall defender, and he's the best of them in the draft. He'd be ready in a few years to hold down a KP defensive spot.

Next on my list would be Ziebell. I'd be disappointed to miss out on Hurley, but Ziebell is the perfect consolation. Big bodied midfielder that can play all around the park, elite skills on both sides of the body. Seems to have added goal-kicking to his CV lately which adds yet another string to his bow. We could use him in a Hodge-like role as a running defensive general.

Hartlett would be next. Knows how to find the ball in bucketloads, and knows how to use it just as well. Not speedy, but not too slow - think Gibbs like pace. Disposal in packs is great as he seems able to get his upper body free to extract the ball. Loves going forward and kicking goals which is a bonus.

Johnstone would be nice but IMO it's too early to take him at pick 6. There's just going to be better available talent at that pick. If he's around at our 2nd rounder I'd take him in an instant, but I suspect he'll be gone by then.

As talented as Vickery is, I'd be amazed, and a little disappointed if we took Vickery with our first pick. We've gone some way to addressing our ruck problems by drafting Kreuzer last year, and Hampson the year before - both in the top 20 picks. To draft another so early would be a little waste, because we really need an experienced ruckman instead. Could go to Port with their first pick anyway, so might not be around at our pick.

Robinson will be a good player, but, like Johnstone, would probably be a bit of a stretch at our pick number 6. I suspect he'll go in the 8-15 range.

The way I see it, there are 6 top talented kids in this draft - Naitanui, Rich, Watts, Hurley, Ziebell, Hartlett. We are guarranteed that at least one of them will still be around at our pick, so from that angle, our pick may be a little easier to make. Then there's a plethora of talent to go from pick 7 onwards for a little while, so we'll get another quality player with our 2nd round pick, should we decide to keep it.

I forgot about trading the pick so I thought I'd add my thoughts on that.

Realistically, there's only 1 situation in which I would like to see our pick 6 traded.

I'd be all for downgrading our 1st round pick and getting another player out of it.

I've been harping on about this example for a while because I feel that if the option is available to us, we should take it.

I'd enquire about swapping 1st round picks with Hawthorn, with them including a young key position player in the exchange.

So: pick 6 in exchange for pick 13/14/15/16 and Beau Dowler.

The Hawks have a heap of KP talent so can afford to let one go, hopefully they ask to be traded which will help our cause a fair bit. I'd ask for Thorp but I feel that the Hawks would be more likely to let Dowler go.

With pick 13/14/15/16 we could pick a tall forward like Lewis Johnston without stretching for him, and pick up another young tall forward at the same time, the added bonus being Dowler would be ready to play senior football pretty much straight away. It's no secret that we need to draft a tall forward to take over from Fev in a few years so getting 2 like this would be a great result.

I can see Hawthorn going for it as if there is any position they need real improvement, it is down back. They don't seem to have the best tall defender depth, so if they could get Hurley they would jump at the opportunity to do so. Even if Hurley doesn't last until their pick they would be guarranteed one of the "big 6" will still be around.

I can see some merit in this idea. A little from left field, but it could certainly be beneficial to both clubs, and the player involved in the trade. I hope we'd be enquiring about it.

How about Thornton + 2nd rounder for Thorp + 2nd or 3rd rounder.

This would allow us to take Zeibell with a top young KPP in Thorp already on board.

I would be all for that trade if it was for Thorpe, but not Dowler, not sold on Dowler @ all. Not sure that Hawthorn would come to the party on that trade either, but the idea is a good 1 if we were to pick up a quality player.

Bring on Hartlett.

Pack-breaking, goalkicking midfielder with neat skills, nice pace and a touch of class. Will fit in nicely with our clearance machines in Gibbs and Murphy :thumbsu:

Has a touch of Judd about him (same 'thing' that Cotchin was talked about for).

I've never seen any of these guys play, nor have I ever worked in football, and certainly not recruitment/talent development.

That said, here's my expert opinion and I'll jump up and down if it doesn't happen (or I'll watch on with interest and see what the pros did...):

Hurley - sounds likely to go to Essendon, if not before, but a genuine KPP prospect. We could do with a blue-chip one of those, and in a relatively short amount of time he'd bump Jammo, Bower, Waite and co down a rung - always a good thing.

Ziebell - ya know... who at the Blues is a really good kick? We have no Stuey Dew or Lindsay Gilbee or Goddard or someone the crowd gets excited about when the ball is handballed out to them because they might be about to let rip a 55m stab pass onto someone's chest. Word has it this guy has cannons for legs, and I think that's exciting. Plus some more size for the midfield can't hurt. We don't have tons of it in there.

Hartlett - again, from all the research I've done (looking at BigFooty in between work and pr0n sites) says this guy is a real deal midfielder. You can't have too many of those, and if there's not a viable KPP prospect worth getting, may as well improve a present team strength -> class midfielders.

Pick 6 is guaranteed to be a good prospect, but I'm more interested in what we do after that. We appear to have money and an itchy trade-trigger finger, so it should be a good summer to speculate about what the Blues will do.

we should give pick #6 to brisbane for Albert Proud - he's going to be the next Daniel Kerr.

For my 5 cents worth, I really think Mitch Robinson is the hidden treasure in this draft. Still a bit skinny, but he is tall and good overhead. He can kick superbly with both feet. Seemed to be a whole level above the other players when he was playing. Because he was in the Tassie side, he hasn't had much notice. He looked in the mold of Simon Black to me, or maybe Sir Christopher Judd.

You're biased :p

I really liked Jeremias' write up and I agree, especially about the trade bit. I think we should look into that.

I voted for Ziebell. I really like the sound of him, but I'd be very happy with Hurley.

You mean the one he pastiched from other reports he read on BF??;):p Recently added goal kicking to his CV?? Unless you saw him in 16's and are privy to infomrtation I'm not, then he has always been a goal kicking HF.

Haven't seen him play, but wouldn't want to go near him. Talent is one thing...

What part did I copy from other reports?

I'm not like you - I don't conform to the views of the majority. I'm willing to stick my balls out on here and display an opinion.

Unlike you who seems hell-bent on merely shooting everyone down for their opinions.
