The GIANTS have selected matured-aged midfielder Tom Hutchesson from Adelaide’s SANFL side with pick 65 of the 2019 NAB AFL Draft on Thursday night.

At 24-years-old Hutchesson becomes the GIANTS’ oldest draftee to have not previously been listed by an AFL club.

Hutchesson hails from Millicent - a town of just under 5,000 people 399km south-east of Adelaide - and made the move to Adelaide earlier this year after helping end Millicent’s 37-year premiership drought in 2018.

The carpenter signed on as a top-up player for the Crows’ SANFL team and impressed in his 14 games playing as a midfielder and half-forward.

Hutchesson is the fourth player to join the GIANTS in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft after Lachlan Ash and Tom Green were selected on Wednesday evening, and the GIANTS traded up the draft earlier on Thursday night to secure Jake Riccardi at pick 51.

What the club says: "When you draft a 23, 24-year old, I think you've got to have that mindset that they're going to be competing for a spot early on. Tom's definitely that, we're not drafting him thinking he'll play in two or three years, we want him to be part of our depth next year. If he's good enough to jump our small forwards who are there, fantastic." - GWS national recruiting manager Adrian Caruso on Thomas Hutchesson

Short and sharp from the club, in contrast to the more effusive thanks to Bunts & Sam Reid yesterday. Tom was a speculative pick late in the draft two years ago - I don't have a problem with that sort of roll of the dice. However, it hasn't worked out, Tom spending most of his time injured, unfortunately, so never really had a chance to show his wares. If we were losing other players, he might have a better chance to hang around, but with this year's list stability, we need his spot to go to the draft with.

Thanks for your time and effort, Tom, and all the best for your future.

The GIANTS can confirm that Nick Shipley and Tom Hutchesson will not be offered contracts for 2022.

Hutchesson joined the GIANTS as a mature-age draftee at the age of 24 with pick 65 in the 2019 Draft. From Millicent in South Australia, Hutchesson played one game in his debut season in 2020 before hamstring injuries affected his 2021 season. GIANTS General Manager of Football Jason McCartney thanked the pair.

“Tom hasn’t had much luck with injuries across his two years with the club but his work ethic and the energy he brought to the group was a great asset.

“We wish both Nick and Tom well in their future endeavours.”
