I like this kid. Plenty of upside and once he grows a muscle in his legs, he should be able to kick a few metres better. From his footage he seems to be able to read the ball well

Grundy is our only depth key defender.. A couple of injuries and he is in..

We may view Lienert and McKenzie as tall flankers rather than proper key defenders but that’s the role they will have. They both gotta make it work until Grundy develops.

We have Burton as well. I'm expecting him to play in defence as a 3rd or 4th tall

Love this pick at point in the draft and could become an absolute steal. Watching his highlights he seems a very good reader of the play at takes marks at their highest point, something not many of our defenders do and he moves well. Few years to bulk up and hopefully will be a constant at FB from 2021 onwards.

this blokes of a weird unit from his interview. Has cult hero written all over him
Actually enjoyed the joint interview...Grundy very and naturally funny and highly intelligent...his highlight package shows a fair bit ..raw yes but a very good selection

Looks to have a very, very long way to go to be up to AFL standard...

Smart kid and with an older brother who knows what it takes to succeed at top level.. don't underestimate how far these strengths will take him. He's every chance of developing into a very effective tall defender; love this pick.

No he isn't.

Backline come round 1 is very likely to be: (HH injured)
HB: Burton, Howard, Houston
FB: DBJ, Clurey, Jonas
INT: Bonner

If we lose a key back during games, Burton is our coverage as he has played his best footy as a key back. In fact in the event of an injury he might be the 1st in line as backup.

Then you have Lienert.
Then McKenzie who we've pigeonholed as a taller defender.

Then if all 3 of those backup plans fall through, and the opposition has so many talls we can't cater for them with HH. Then we have Riley Grundy.

Even still in that scenario it is possible Westhoff would just go back.

So Riley Grundy is about 4th in line as a backup KPD. So will only be playing if serious bad fortune falls upon us.

You have made some good points Cookie boy, although I am a little concerned about your pigeon holing of McKenzie as a tall defender, because I pigeon holed him fairly early last season under the heading C. F. P. ;)

Riley was at the Club 1870 event. What a great young man. Very personable and speaks so well. When Barry asked him a question Riley gave his answer with plenty of detail that even took Baz's breath away. Not worried at all about public speaking.

He had an ingrown hair in his knee. The knee became infected and Riley wound up in hospital on an IV drip and has just had clearance to start training again.

Riley said the upside was he could do some weights while he couldn't run and put on a bit of upper body beef.

Told the story of being at the Belair pub for the draft with his mum and thinking he wouldn't get drafted as the picks rolled into the 70s. Then his name was called out and he said his mum dead set lost it. She started screaming and crying and people thought he was killing her. :D

He stayed to the very end of the night like a true Port Adelaide player, chatting to people. He was surprised when we told him some people thought he had done his knee water skiing. He knew the rumour was around but was surprised anyone would think it was him. Then he realised he was injured at the same time of the rumour and had missed a couple of public functions.

Ingrown hair in the knee which became infected?

I had to look it up to make sure he wasn't having a lend of us. Does occur.

Players shouldn't shave their legs in case they get an ingrown hair, end up in hospital and miss games ... am I doing this right? ;)
Travis Boak is a self confessed manscaper. Just as well he is not one of our captains and setting a bad example.
