List Mgmt. Pick 9

Going to throw my 2bobs worth in on the pick9 selection, like many others had followed the upcoming draft players very closelymyself the past well let's say 12/15 years without a beat, and. with the consensus that we were going to use our picks this year and possibly next years for trade targets no doubt had an influence on not getting as heavily involved in this years draftees as previously.
I still watched the championships and ive kept an eye on TAC cup and interstate results but have seen far less footage than i have normally done this year ,imo this is a fairly average draft with few standouts then a long list of players with good strengths but just as much with questionable weaknesses.
Personally if the chance to trade with GCS for #15(16) & #20(21) for #9(10) & #43 (44) I'm taking that in a heartbeat for i believe there are 2 players particularly that may seem a little bit high/reach in the eyes of many particularly for the years they have had, no doubt they had inconsistent years for different reasons and with some areas they need to work on but on what I've seen of Dylan Williams and Elijah Taylor could easily turn out top5 of this draft class.
Not only are they what we need but more importantly they possess skills speed and that touch of Xfactor we are crying out for, also like the looks of Cody Weihtman who also has some very good skills, speed and poise as well.
Kemp could have been up in the top handful, I'd be very weary in drafting the kid coming off an ACL...

#16 #21 #57?

*Dylan Williams
*Elijah Taylor
*Cody Weightman

As much I rate Williams, isn’t it a bit hypocritical to then be wary of Kemp’s knee?

I'm hugely bullish on Stocker. Has good acceleration within a clearance coupled with good agility, but he plays heavy. Reminds me of a more agile Daniel Kerr, but with better skills by foot.
Quite a stretch, Kerr was a freak and has Stocker covered comfortably inho. And that's not to say he won't become a quality player for us, there's plenty to like, especially his hardness and those elite skills.

From what I can see from a quick squizz on the relevent BF boards, the talk of our pick 9 for GCS' 2020 pick 11 involved a trade for Martin. I didn't see any that revolve around just swapping picks.
Which IMO doesn't mean we can ignore that as an option.

yeah, that’s what I said. They offered Martin and 2020 #11 for #9 and our 2020 2nd

Why isn't Will Gould considered a top ten pick? Is it because he was a man child playing against boys? I watched his highlights and havent seen many better in this draft pool. I would not be unhappy to take him at pick 9. Talk about big bodied utility.

Edit. Kemp or Stephens first if they are on the board. Gould next. Seriously chuck this lad across half back for his first few years then get him in the midfield. In four years time every club will be admonishing the fact they didn't take him

He's athletically the worst top 30 prospect.

Can play, 100%, but the question is, can he play at the top level with the inherent limitations of his body?

It's a punt, on top of the inherent risk that all draftees have about the unknown side of development and adaptation to top tier competition.

Given that we're going to be pushing up the ladder from now on, this is hopefully our last chance to draft a top ten player for a while. Pick nine should, in theory, provide a quality long term player. Dylan Stephens is exactly what we need. On what I've witnessed he has pace, poise and nice skills. He has played against older blokes this year which might suggest he's capable of playing from the start of next year. Some on here have suggested he can play inside as well. What's not to like? Hope he's available at our pick. Kemp looks great too but has sustained a major injury. Could live with us drafting him though.

Well, they’ve tried at least once

Think about what the AFL have done if this is indeed the case. It's simply crazy -
'We may end up taking that pick #11 off you if you fare well in 2020, but if you use it to advantage now, you can'

How does that make any sense at all? It doesn't.
It's just one joke to another from the wise heads at the AFL.

I’ll be surprised if we keep the pick. SOS is ‘draft points’ obsessed (which I mostly dont mind). He’s also in love with trading. Constantly looking for a 2 percent gain. And I’m pretty convinced the peace pipe will be smoked between Gc and Carlton and a pick swap will let them save face while delivering Martin to us for nothing. Clearly GC don’t want 15 and 20. By their own admission they have a bunch of picks now.

It seems simple to me. Trade 9 for 15 and 20. We chuck in 43 if it leads to a delisting of Martin.

You do make it sounds so nice to make this trade but this is a massive win for Carlton and you would do this trade every day of the week even without the martin thing happening. But also you mention they have a bunch of picks but are throwing in 43 generously. Lets be honest thats a good deal for carlton

Yep Williams will be a steal for whoever gets him, as you say his year has been derailed but his form from last year had him spoken about as pick1 this year, should definitely be the number 1 rated forward in this draft, Taylor has huge upside with development as that hybrid mid size forward ala Stephenson, Weightman pretty much speaks for himself, great second and third efforts, explosive and will probably be able to push up the ground, all worthy choices.
Wouldn’t mind SOS doing a Stocker for Williams especially if he slides into the second round which is likely.
Whatever way we can get two early enough picks I'm all for as long as we keep next years first, Williams and Taylor are by far the most exciting and talented forwards in this years draft their upside is huge they make things happen with the ball Williams back stress fractures are a little concerning but if he's given the all clear well worth the pick, Taylor as was mentioned by another poster maybe dealing with off field/family isues if that's the case maybe coming over here surrounded by Eddie Martin Samo Jonesy and the WA boys in our system may be very beneficial for him as well. Weightman has enough tricks along with his speed and ball use to potentially be a very good player, if we could manage to snare any of these three I'd be extremely happy...

I'm generally against trading down, but as has been said, I wouldn't care so much this year and may end up welcoming it.
We won't get the player we want in Kemp, nor likely get a need in Stephens.

Why don't we go for needs and get a couple of speedsters with goal-kicking skills and place them under the tutelage of Betts?
It may not be as simple as that but why not? No point just getting something we don't really need at that pick #9.

Gould is the next Trent McKenzie great long kick but slow and won't make it at AFL level. His weight worries me aswell as I don't think he is as professional as he could be.

Look maybe? Williams ended the year with stress fractures in the back so i see where your coming from, they can be an ongoing issue for a persons life if bad enough hopefully that's not the case, as far as knees go for me that's a big buyer beware he could come back and and never re injure it again or for his sake i hope not experience another ACL
which is unfortunately the greater chance of happening...

Carlton hold pick 9
Fremantle hold pick 10
Hawthorn hold pick 11

Fremantle and Hawthorn have Henry and Maginness respectively, both rated right around picks 9,10 and 11.

Carlton have a great opportunity to cash in here whilst enabling Fremantle and Hawthorn the chance to take quality players with their first selections before paying for matched bids on their players with later picks.

On draft night :

Carlton trade pick 9 to Fremantle for pick 10 and a future 2nd rounder.

Fremantle select a quality player with pick 9.

Carlton trade pick 10 to Hawthorn for pick 11 and pick 30.

Hawthorn select a quality player with pick 10.

Carlton use pick 11 to select their highest rated remaining player excluding Henry and Maginness.

When Henry and Maginness are bid on by other clubs following the natural order, Fremantle and Hawthorn are happy to match the bids and pay for their players with later less meaningful picks.

Carlton have picks 11,30 and 43 in this draft as well as Fremantle’s future 2nd rounder in next years draft.

We then walk Martin through the PSD.

Yeah agree but the other one I would like to get, hopefully he gets to 43, is Kossie Pickett, if we can package up some later picks and get a pick in the late 20s early 30s I would be wrapped with Pickett, the perfect player to learn from Eddie while he is still playing, have a Squizzy at his highlights very much like a young Cyril with exceptional hands and side step as well as footy smarts, situational awareness and can use both feet. Just think it is now the perfect time to get a young indigenous small forward to work with Eddie so that we can capitalise fully on Eddies last couple of years.

In his early Phantom Draft, KM has Kemp gone by our Pick and we take Luke Jackson with Stephens and Robertson still available.

What do we think?

I’ve posted on KM’s thread to say I think we would take Stephens or Robertson ahead of Jackson if Kemp was gone.

Stephens does look like a gem. Just think that with him having a light frame, he would probably spend more time in our VFL side next year. I do really like him though.

Impressive 6goal highlights reel with a screamer, looks a very natural forward gets to the fall of the ball and right areas with a good turn of pace in the small sample size i looked at, perfect type for Eddie to take under his wing...

Crows would have to consider Stephens at 4 Likewise Freo Jackson at 7.

Following the outlined Carlton/Fremantle/Hawthorn trades above,

Fremantle could have :

Jackson with pick 7
Robertson with pick 9
Henry with less meaningful later picks

All local WA boys.
Definitely a feather in Bell’s cap 😎

Hawthorn could have :

McAsey with pick 10
Maginness with less meaningful later picks

I'd be shocked if we took a ruckman at Pick 9 considering how highly rated TDK is internally let alone a WA ruckman.

If the draft plays out as Knightmare expects (assuming Ash and Kemp are gone), then Stephens or Robertson would be the obvious choice. Our recruiting team (especially SOS) seem to love endurance athletes so Stephens IMO would be hard for them to pass up.

Lol people thinking that we will threaten hawthorn or freo and say we will bid on their player to trade us an extra 2nd rounder are deluded.

That is acting in bad faith and something we just would not do. This is professional sport.

And if we did that imagine next time we have a father son top 10 pick and they bid out of bad faith.

It just doesn’t happen
Doesn't play out like that.

Hawthorn's list manager comes to us, says, "What's your plans for pick 9?"

"Your boy Finn looks perfect for us, would complement our forward line perfectly, plus gives Eddie a protégé to work with to time him coming on just as Ed'd retire!"

"... I'll get back to you."

They then go back to their list management team, and they discuss how to potentially dissuade our premature bid, offering up either a trade or opting to match should they rearrange things sufficiently. Communication between managers is pretty transparent, I'd have thought, and there would be little by way of direct backstabbing.

Gamesmanship, though, is another thing entirely.

Twomey has linked us with Kemp a couple of times in those draft review videos on the AFL website.

We're either really keen on him or it's all just smoke and mirrors.
Twomey does speak to clubs, so you would assume he gets good mail.

No shit. Why else would we let them move up the order? They are not getting a pick higher than ours for 15 and 20. Those picks will become 17 and 22/23 after academy. We are getting Martin anyway. So fine, take that out of it. They are still not getting that top ten pick without giving up both 15 and 20. You’ve been around long enough to know clubs pay over the points odds to the time of 300-500 to get higher picks. That’s about what I’ve suggested.
