List Mgmt. Pick 9

Random musing of the day...

IF we are to trade down:

- we will bid on Henry. That will then push Freo to trade down themselves. Probably with GC. Thereby ensuring that if we traded with Cats it would make that pick one spot better.

These things matter mate.

What percentage change do you think we are to trade/swap pick 9 on draft night? I got a funny feeling we have a few irons in the fire with teams trying to leapfrog one another, especially after everyone got an initial taste of it last year. A club like ours I think stands more to maximise that picks worth by playing the trade game and going into next years draft with more points than going to the draft at pick 9 this year. Can also make a move if we don't think a player of worth slides to 9. I think we sit in a really good spot.

I think there is a very good chance.

But I doubt we do it before the pick comes around unless we trade up which seems unlikely.

If we are to move it on we will get maximum value by trading it when it comes around.

Hawks are ruthless and they would be the last club to play games with on bidding, only have to look at last year when they didn’t match the bid for their NGA lad Mosquito when Essendon bid for him at 38.

My advice - only bid early on Finn if you really want him, because Hawks won’t think twice about bypassing him if others are in front of him on their board.

Read this article below

I think every team would be ruthless if they prefer someone else at their pick ahead of an academy or f/s player. You should only bid on the player if you genuinely want the player, especially if it’s a top 10 pick.

I do feel as though Dodo was trying to “keep them honest”, like he did with JSOS though.

If SOS is going do you think he'd be less likely to use 9 to stack next year's draft?

I would certainly bid on Henry but Freo will match.

Kemp I need more convincing on. The ACL worries me.
We already have a few players with prior serious knee injuries. Doc, Kreuzer, Setters, Curnow, Tdk. Not sure Kemp is worth the risk.

Serong seems to be sliding. I am no expert but he isn’t my preferred option.

If we keep the pick, give me Stephens or Ash and I will be very happy.

that’s if Stephens and Ash slide down to us. Serong is 100% the slider. I rate him but that’s just me

50/50

I'm leaning towards Ash now - just not sure he makes it to 9 though.

This really is the draft for us to get the most we can from. We should be having a crack in 2-3 seasons and getting an extra year into drafters could be pivotal (all else equal). Next off season the focus has to be bringing in experience.

Sheehan took Serong at #10 in the AFL-site Phantom - Says he couldn't wait to get the name out. (Good enough for me)

Serong would be a likely starter for us come round 1 next year and add pretty much what we were looking at via Papley, albeit at not the same output of a more senior player.
Still Stephens or Serong for me. No need for another HBF'er that's going to become a wingman, a midfielder or a forward.....etc. Surely we've learned.

How does it make Geelong's pick any better?

9 (Car), 10 (Freo), 11 (Haw), 12 (PA), 13 (WB), 14 (Gee), 15 (GC)

We bid on Henry at 9.
Freo trade down with GC (to 15 and 20?).
Freo match with 15.
Our 9 becomes 10. We trade down to Geelong's 14 (now 15).
9 (Fre - Henry), 10 (Gee), 11 (GC), 12 (Haw), 13 (PA), 14 (WB), 15 (Car)

We don't bid on Henry at 9.
Freo don't trade down with GC.
We trade down to Geelong's 14.
Freo match a bid somewhere with 22.
9 (Gee), 10 (Fre), 11 (Haw), 12 (PA), 13 (WB), 14 (Car)
Freo's 22 slots in somewhere, depending on where the bid for Henry comes.

Makes no difference at all.

We slide back 5 (non-Henry) selections.

Caleb serong marking of the day he's overhead marking shows that he's definitely got a few tricks and athletic traits and I'm definitely warming to this selection because i feel that he's going to get through to 9

Is it just me, or are those commentators frothing at some pretty standard contested marks?

The last one in particular - "he's sat on their heads"? He did nothing of the sort :P

From what I've read, is Caleb Serong basically a Toby Greene clone, or have I got him and Flanders mixed up?

Either way, a smallish forward who's as atuned to forward craft and pressure (with higher production than most) and a bullocking mid fits our bill perfectly after missing on Paps.

Problem is that we'll still likely get Papley next year, so I can see the desire to either a) pick up a Kemp or Stephens type or b) trade down to the highest bidder and grad someone potentially just as good in Dylan Williams (forward/mid) and possibly grab Kossie Pickett in the 20s with the added pick/s.

For the first time in a while, I don't think I'm particularly married to the idea of one particular option - such is my belief in the youth we now have.

Question

Say we were looking to trade down but had no takers. So we then select Player X at 9. Can we then on trade that player or once selected he’s selected. Eg. We select the ruck from WA and GEE wanted him and now offer 14 and 2020 WCE first. Can we do that???

Criminally underrating Ash who has long been considered one of the best prospects in this draft.

He doesn't have to transition to any other position on the ground to be a valuable selection inside the top 10 either.

No. Once you pick a player, he is bound to that club.

Ash is my preferred pick as well but I don't think he will slide as far as pick 9 or 10 to us...k I'm really jealous of Essendon who got in b/f for us with Adam Saad/// and I see Ash as the long-term answer of a like replacement

Thought as much. Been watching too much NBA. FWIW, I’d be happy with Ash, Serong or Kemp at 9. Think there will be a bidding war on Jackson though and we trade back. Should bid on Henry if still available at 9.

Has been suggested the AFL may look to introduce it at some point. I hope that day is a long way off.
